Volkswagen Taigo - AutoWeek Review - English subtitles

Wat de smaakpolitie ervan vindt is niet belangrijk, de SUV-coupé rukt in alle segmenten op. Volkswagen vond dat het niet kon achterblijven en komt daarom met de Taigo: een lagere SUV op basis van de T-Cross. Wij reden ermee.

8.52 -> You'd say Volkswagen has more than enough SUV's in their range, right? And if they really need another one, why not make one that's right...
15.26 -> inbetween the Tiguan and Touareg. That's quite the gap, I'd say. Volkswagen however has seen things differently, so they've made one that's...
21.434 -> right inbetween the T-Cross and the T-Roc. And this is it, the brand-new Volkswagen Taigo. Or rather, it's not very brand-new really.
26.17 -> If you know your international cars, you'll know this car has been around for a year in Brazil, where it's called Nivus. But now they've shipped it...
35.21 -> to Europe and they've changed a few things to meet European standards. Or they've tried, I'm going to find out in a little bit.
41.761 -> And the idea behind it is simple. The T-Cross sells very well, but it's nothing more than a boring-looking, raised-up Polo.
50.628 -> And with its sloped and lower roof, this Taigo looks a tad more playful. I don't like coupé-SUV's as a whole, but even I like the way this looks.
63.48 -> Looking at the engine range, it's relatively similar to the T-Cross, but it does come with specs from the facelifted Polo.
68.624 -> That means you can choose between a 1.0-litre engine with either 95 or 110 horsepower or a 1.5-litre engine with 150 horsepower.
72.636 -> And that's it, so don't expect any four-wheel drive or off-road capabilities despite the rugged-looking exterior.
77.754 -> Because people who are buying these sort of cars, don't need that at all.
80.303 -> Like I said, it's lower than the T-Cross and T-Roc, but it's also longer than the T-Cross and T-Roc. Which is remarkable, because the T-Roc...
89.891 -> is positioned above the Taigo. The T-Roc does have a longer wheelbase, which shows on the rear seat. Let me show you.
99.623 -> Usually, I take off my coat for this, but the weather is really bad, so that's not going to happen.
104.549 -> The legroom is decent, I've still got some left. Also, I can fit my feet beneath the seat and the seating angle is relatively good.
110.25 -> I often complain about that, but not in here. Let me put the headrest up. Despite the sloped roof, the headroom is very good.
117.979 -> It looks so simple but looking at other brands, it's not simple at all. As an adult, I can sit pretty good back here.
124.869 -> It does look cheap though, which is fitting for the segment. Despite its size, it's still a B-segment car.
138.326 -> The boot is suffering from the sloped roof though, because we only have 438 litres of luggage space, which is less than in the T-Cross.
145.45 -> If you fold down the seats, you have 1.100 litres to work with, which is also less than the T-Cross.
149.713 -> Despite being a little less spacious, it's more expensive. When you equip them with the same things, it's about €800 more expensive...
157.541 -> than the T-Cross.
164.359 -> It's getting more and more difficult for us to place all these cars. Size doesn't really translate to the segment anymore. Partially at least.
173.033 -> Complex story. Just think of the Renault Arkana, which is a big car, but it's also a B-segment car. The same goes for this Taigo.
184.244 -> The fact that it's actually meant for different markets, usually is a reason for concern. Just think of the Ford EcoSport, that was a disaster.
193.825 -> They weren't up to standard for European markets. Luckily, manufacturers have now realized they can't just take them over here without changing stuff.
203.304 -> Noise isolation, refinement, you name it. And Volkswagen has done their best on the Taigo.
208.819 -> It feels very grown-up. The chassis is relatively okay, soft but not too weak. Some bumps could've been absorbed better, but it's still...
221.115 -> a B-segment car, not a C-segment car. The T-Roc will absorb better because it's based on a Golf, whereas this is based on a Polo.
230.384 -> And you can clearly notice the differences. Having said that, it doesn't feel like a cheap car when looking at the equipment.
237.531 -> The drivetrain is good as well. Right now I'm driving the 1.0-litre TSI with 110 horsepower and a DSG-gearbox.
241.832 -> And it's more than alright. Especially the power is sufficient. For most buyers that is, because if you have four adults in the car...
253.512 -> with luggage, 150 horsepower might be better for you. For 80 percent it's more than enough though. It feels relatively rapid even.
261.014 -> When you put your foot down, it'll go quite fast. Speaking of putting your foot down, when you set off, it's got a lot of traction.
269.63 -> That's very refined. Usually, small engines with an automatic gearbox in cheaper cars don't work as well. You can't dose the power properly...
276.696 -> so you'll have traction struggles. Not a very good combination. This Taigo doesn't suffer from that, not even in these conditions.
286.705 -> So imagine how it will be in dry conditions, because it could've been a lot worse.
293.519 -> At first, I thought it was a shame that this car wasn't available with the eTSI-drivetrains. They're only available from the Golf up.
298.394 -> According to Volkswagen, that's because of the price. The mild-hybrid systems are more expensive, so it wouldn't be profitable to fit these cars...
307.611 -> with them. I don't think that goes for the Netherlands though, because the profit will come from the tax advantages.
316.426 -> But to only supply those drivetrains for the Netherlands was a little bit too much for Volkswagen, so they wanted to focus only on electricity.
323.735 -> Too bad, because an eTSI drives much better than a non-eTSI. Having said that, the drivetrain in here isn't bad at all.
332.961 -> Especially if I compare it with the competition, like a Renault Arkana or a Citroën C4, which is still a B-segment car despite its size.
341.869 -> So I prefer this drivetrain over those mild-hybrids.
349.237 -> Anyway, rivals are moving as well. Just look at the Koreans with their 1.0-litre engines and electric motors. Very good drivetrains, so Volkswagen...
357.182 -> will have to keep their eyes open. If I look around me, it's easy to see why it's not a C-segment car,
363.622 -> because it looks relatively simple. But I do have a very good climate control and a common multimedia system, which isn't the best around...
370.571 -> but still very good. Also, I have a digital instrument cluster in front of me, which only has one dial.
377.798 -> Despite the fact it's fully digital. I would've preferred if they had just used two dials, but it's almost like they've wanted it to look cheaper.
385.976 -> Small things like that make it very clear. The finishing is alright, but the used materials are quite simple.
392.737 -> It's clearly a B-segment car, but the size does try to make you forget about that.
398.059 -> I already mentioned the boot, which is smaller than in the T-Cross, because of the sloped roof. But in German cars, headroom usually isn't a problem.
406.426 -> The same goes for the back, so you'll have a lot of car for your money. So Volkswagen thinking they can sell a lot of these, isn't that crazy of a thought.
418.54 -> I think it'll be successful. It looks good, people like it, and it actually has a dashing appearance. The T-Cross really looks boring.
427.69 -> This Taigo just has a nicer design. Again, personally I don't like coupé-SUV's and I would always go for something else, but a lot of Dutch car buyers...
437.992 -> tend to think differently. Even in higher segments. I mean, it all started with the BMW X6, which spawned the BMW X4 and Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé,
445.085 -> which in turn inspired the Renault Arkana and Volvo C40. And now we have this B-segment Taigo.
451.357 -> And because it looks smaller on pictures than it actually and because it's a car that isn't disappointing in any way, I think this will have a bright...
459.533 -> future in the Netherlands.
