How to Use a Jade Roller for Facial Massage | Byrdie

In the realm of crystal healing, jade is associated with protecting against negative energy and balancing your chi (or qi), your body’s energetic life force. According to Chinese medicine, any number of physical and mental symptoms from anxiety to fatigue to actual pain can indicate that your qi is out of whack. Practices like acupuncture and jade rolling can help remedy this, as do general self-care practices like eating well, exercising, and getting enough sleep.

But even if that kind of spirituality isn’t your speed, you can still see many physical benefits from jade rolling. By rolling the jade across your facial muscles, says Chang, “you increase blood circulation, assist lymphatic drainage, and diminish the appearance of fine lines.” Like other methods of facial massage, it even helps your products penetrate more deeply into your skin.

Watch above to see Byrdie Editor, Victoria Hoff, demonstrate the best practices when using a jade roller.

0.08 -> Hey, guys!
0.9 -> This is Victoria.
1.86 -> I'm the news editor at Byrdie, and I'm really excited to share one of my favorite skincare
5.6 -> rituals, which is called jade rolling.
8 -> So right now what’s really new and now in beauty is this really cool merging of Eastern
12.94 -> and Western culture, and that's seen in wellness, in beauty, kind of all over.
17.11 -> And it's really exciting that we're looking beyond our own borders at these techniques,
21.01 -> which—a lot of them are really ancient, and jade rolling is a really great example
24.51 -> of that.
25.51 -> This is a jade roller—it's made of jade stone, hence the name—and jade is used in
31.05 -> ancient Chinese tradition to ward off negative energy, to balance your chi, and just bring
36.27 -> on some good vibes, so that's all really nice, but it has a really practical use as well,
41.96 -> and that is basically to function as a facial massage tool.
45.32 -> It stimulates collagen, it lifts your facial muscles, and then also it makes your products
49.65 -> absorb really deeply.
51.12 -> This jade roller is from Ling Skincare, and the founder and owner of Ling is Ling Chan,
55.86 -> a really, really talented esthetician, and she once gave me a valuable piece of skincare
61.34 -> advice, and that is to think of your skin cells like roof shingles.
65.479 -> So if you look at a roof and the way that the shingles are layered, the opening is always
69.899 -> at the bottom, and our skin cells are actually arranged in a very similar way, and that's
74.569 -> really important to remember whether your cleansing, applying product, or using a massage
79.14 -> tool or just your hands to always apply in an upward motion.
84.14 -> And that's kind of the theme of jade rolling.
86.289 -> It really does lift and use that upward motion, and so you're really hitting all the skin
91.13 -> cells, allowing whatever product you're using with it to absorb better.
95.139 -> And you can use any product that you like—usually it’s a moisturizer.
98.71 -> I like using a serum or a cream, and I have two wonderful ones with me today.
104.34 -> The Kypris is a little less wallet friendly, but it's phenomenal.
108.77 -> It's called Moonlight Catalyst, it's full of peptides, it’s really wonderful for slathering
113.319 -> on at night and waking up to really bright, refreshed skin.
117.489 -> And then the other one is from one of my personal favorite brands, French Girl, and this is
121.489 -> their brand-new facial serum.
123.069 -> It’s made with neroli, which is like one of my favorite scents, so I love this one.
127.609 -> I'm going to use the Kypris.
129.849 -> You just apply a few drops of your preferred product, so you want to put on a really nice
137.769 -> layer of that just to help the jade stone glide a little bit better on your skin.
142.849 -> And then you just roll, and it's really simple—you just roll up, you just target every area of
149.7 -> your face.
151.04 -> Once you feel like you've kind of given yourself a boost, then proceed with your regular skincare
155.48 -> routine, makeup routine, and you're good to go.
157.209 -> I actually really love doing this first thing in the morning, too, because the stone is
160.79 -> really cool, so it's really good for puffy eyes or under-eye bags.
165.34 -> If you want to get more details in the background of jade rolling and what products are best
169.719 -> to use with it, you can check out a story I actually wrote about it for Byrdie, and
172.84 -> it’s on byrdie.com right now.
174.89 -> And as always, if you want any other pointers or tips or tutorials, have any request, just
179.93 -> let us know, and we will answer your questions.
