How To Use Road Bicycle Gears
Road bicycle gears enable riders to ride at a comfortable effort level over almost any terrain, but, to be able to do this, riders first must be able to use their gears intuitively. In this video, Manon explains how to use road bike gears, as well as sharing some handy tips to help fix any problems you might encounter and ride more smoothly out on the road! Content
.04 -> bicycle gears are brilliant
.04 -> although they can seem a little bit
.96 -> confusing at times
.32 -> especially if you're new to sport but
.88 -> don't worry
.679 -> in this video we're going to show you
.679 -> everything you need to know
.04 -> about the gears and how to use them so
.199 -> you can get the most out of your riding
.64 -> [Music]
.08 -> bicycle gears allow you to maintain a
.32 -> comfortable pedaling speed
.84 -> to the terrain or gradient of road
.079 -> you're on
.2 -> the very first bicycle only had one gear
.239 -> so no matter how steep the road you just
.36 -> have to keep pedaling
.04 -> even if it became very difficult gears
.239 -> on modern day bicycles have a lot more
.399 -> options
.039 -> meaning you can pedal uphill and
.8 -> downhill comfortably
.8 -> well pedaling uphill is never really
.199 -> that comfortable
.399 -> but what is a comfortable pedaling speed
.359 -> cadence is the term
.719 -> used in cycling to measure the speed
.64 -> which you are pedaling at
.08 -> it's measured in rpm revolutions per
.119 -> minute
.84 -> so basically how many times you turn the
.08 -> pedals in just one minute
.24 -> it's recommended they pedal at a cadence
.479 -> of around 70 to 100 rpm
.52 -> but you want to pedal at a cadence
.119 -> that's comfortable for you
.04 -> i'm pedaling at 85 rpm right now and
.72 -> this is pretty comfortable for me
.119 -> everyone pedals at a different speed so
.28 -> there isn't a right or wrong answer
.439 -> some people prefer a higher cadence and
.439 -> some people prefer a lower cadence
.479 -> you want to use your gears to help
.4 -> maintain your cadence despite the speed
.56 -> or terrain you're riding
.079 -> so for example if you're riding a pill
.399 -> you want to select an easy gear so your
.32 -> cadence
.88 -> doesn't drop too much
.72 -> gears will either be electronic or
.88 -> manual and they're pretty easy to use
.799 -> once you've figured them out you have
.96 -> buttons or levers
.479 -> here one side will change the big
.88 -> chainring and the little chainring and
.479 -> the other side
.28 -> will change the cassette at the back
.399 -> i've got electronic gearing on mine so i
.12 -> just click these buttons
.48 -> and it will change the gears for me
.48 -> bikes come in a variety of different
.48 -> components and gearing so
.319 -> my bike might have a different gear
.08 -> ratio to use but
.599 -> essentially to explain the gears really
.599 -> easily the big ring is where you want to
.76 -> be
.08 -> when you're traveling at high speed on
.72 -> flat fast roads
.239 -> and then if you start going up a hill
.239 -> and it gets a little bit steep you want
.76 -> to drop
.4 -> into your little ring there and that
.08 -> will make it a lot easier
.08 -> and for the cassette at the back you've
.68 -> got quite a few different gears to
.519 -> choose from
.48 -> so the biggest cog that's going to be
.4 -> your easiest gear
.68 -> so the one closest to the spokes that's
.519 -> the easiest and then
.72 -> they gradually get harder and harder as
.64 -> you move down to the smallest one
.54 -> [Music]
.64 -> change gears whenever you think it's
.4 -> necessary or when your cadence
.56 -> changes from what you're comfortable
.08 -> with but try and avoid changing gears
.8 -> a million times up one short climb
.36 -> sometimes it's best to stay
.959 -> in the same gear and push a little bit
.28 -> harder up the climb or get out the
.04 -> saddle
.84 -> if you see a steep climb coming up think
.72 -> about what gear you want to be in for
.56 -> the climb
.2 -> you want to avoid changing gears up the
.599 -> climb because
.72 -> this can cause them to jump
.48 -> when you come to a stop say at traffic
.64 -> lights for instance
.92 -> make sure you're in the right gear to
.239 -> pull off
.04 -> you don't want to be stuck in a massive
.12 -> gear trying to get it going from the
.879 -> traffic lights because
.239 -> that's going to be hard work
.77 -> [Music]
.239 -> if your gears aren't working properly
.4 -> they're rubbing
.28 -> they're jumping or you get this annoying
.2 -> friction noise you can fix this yourself
.68 -> but a bike shop
.56 -> will be able to fix it pretty quickly if
.36 -> your chain isn't sitting in the right
.28 -> place for the gears then it won't run
.28 -> smoothly
.159 -> the derailleur that you can see here
.92 -> will guide your chain
.28 -> into the right place it could be as
.599 -> simple as
.4 -> adjusting your derailleur so the gears
.72 -> run smoothly
.4 -> a worn out chain or cassette could be
.799 -> the cause of your gears not running
.56 -> smoothly
.439 -> it even could be your gear cables we
.84 -> have lots of mechanical explainers on
.919 -> our channel so make sure you check them
.68 -> out
.16 -> if you need some help
.52 -> thank you for watching this video and i
.6 -> hope it's helped you understand a little
.36 -> bit more
.08 -> about the gears if you have any funny
.88 -> gear selection stories
.16 -> please leave them in the comment section
.32 -> below
.44 -> my my funny story was i was out on a
.32 -> training camp in italy and i was in the
.479 -> mountains and my gear cable snapped and
.8 -> i was stuck
.68 -> in my hardest gear for the rest of the
.68 -> ride good job i had some friends there
.08 -> to push me home or i'll
.68 -> probably still be out there
