The SEAT Leon has been available in SC three-door, five door hatch and ST estate body styles for a while now, but SEAT thought it fitting to introduce a new lifestyle, four-wheel-drive estate variant to the range – the X-PERIENCE.

Delivering off-road capability and estate practicality, the X-PERIENCE goes up against models like the Vauxhall Insignia Country Tourer and Volkswagen Alltrack.

We take it out on the road and put it to the test.

Constantly updated, Car Keys provides first-hand video reviews, as well as all of the latest car news.

16.56 -> According to SEAT, this is the best car it has ever built, and until its long-awaited
21.08 -> SUV arrives, it’s also the only model from the Spanish manufacturer which can venture
25.97 -> off-road.
27.48 -> So what is it?
28.48 -> Well, it’s called the Leon X-Perience.
29.98 -> Yes, it has a rather odd name, but all you really need to know is the fact this Leon
35.11 -> has four-wheel drive, more ground clearance than the standard car and a rugged body kit,
39.05 -> so it should be able to tackle fields and rough tracks.
45.39 -> Apart from sitting 15mm higher, the interior will be very familiar to Leon owners.
52.449 -> There are some changes though, including orange stitching, sports seats with leather bolsters,
59.99 -> X-Perience badges and even the 4-Drive logo on the gearstick to remind you not to turn
65.92 -> back in adverse conditions.
68.429 -> Just like the Leon, the driving position is very good, with lots of adjustment and the
73.189 -> instruments are clear, with quite a sporty look.
76.1 -> Go to adjust the standard infotainment system and menus pop-up, thanks to a proximity sensor,
81.64 -> which means the map becomes less cluttered when you are just driving along.
85.249 -> Equipment levels are good too, with Bluetooth, USB, Aux and SD connections giving you plenty
90.929 -> of ways to connect your music collection.
92.64 -> If the standard SE trim is too basic for you, SE Technology trim adds full LED headlights,
101.399 -> four driving modes, sat-nav, auto lights and wipers and 18-inch wheels.
104.88 -> Because the X-Perience is based on the ST estate, it’s practical too, with a 587-litre
110.78 -> boot expanding to 1,470 litres with a quick pull on two levers in the boot.
128.5 -> Behind the tougher bumper, you’ll find the same 2.0-litre diesel from the ST and hatchback,
135.92 -> with either 148bhp and a manual gearbox or 181bhp with a DSG automatic.
144.87 -> We’re in the cheaper option, and we think it’s the one to go for, with 0-62mph coming
150.28 -> up in a decent 8.7 seconds, making the X-Perience a rather good one.
153.65 -> With more power it’ll cover the same benchmark in 7.1 seconds, but this seems rather unnecessary
161.319 -> for this kind of car.
164.489 -> Economy for both versions is identical, with 57.6mpg and emissions of 129g/km costing £110
172.349 -> each year in road tax.
175.68 -> That’s pretty good for this type of vehicle, but the standard ST is over 10mpg better and
183.17 -> has a tax bill of just £20, so make sure you definitely want the four-wheel drive.
188.72 -> SEAT says it has fitted ‘raised comfort suspension’, and it does feel a bit softer
195.86 -> in the bends and under heavy braking, but despite the extra bodyroll, there’s still
200.269 -> lots of grip and this Leon is pretty fun to drive.
203.209 -> At higher speeds it’s comfortable and refined, but the 18-inch wheels can fidget over pockmarked
209.12 -> roads around town.
211.47 -> The SEAT Leon X-Perience does most things very well indeed, and has a slightly quirky
225.489 -> character, which we like.
228.109 -> This colour, incidentally, is called Adventure Brown.
231.12 -> In certain tricky circumstances it will also take you further than the front-wheel drive
234.86 -> car can.
235.86 -> But, its running costs are higher as a result, and it doesn’t handle quite as well.
240.79 -> If those things don’t bother you and you love the styling, go for the X-Perience.
245.15 -> If they do, the ST estate will save you some money and costs less in the first place.
250.28 -> Do you want to experience this rugged Leon?
