0.08 -> If you're like me and you've been using google play music for the past couple of
3.679 -> years and find yourself needing to transition over to
6.96 -> YouTube Music or you're just curious about what YouTube Music has to offer
11.44 -> you're in the right place, so let's dive into how to use
15.28 -> YouTube Music. YouTube Music is a dedicated music service from YouTube
19.52 -> which is owned by Google that leverages YouTube's insanely large music catalog
24.24 -> with a heavy emphasis on video and live performances since a
28.16 -> lot of the time YouTube is the only place some of these
31.439 -> live performances are housed. The service is available on both android and iOS
36.559 -> devices as well as smart speakers like Google's
39.28 -> own speakers, Bose speakers, Sonos speakers, JBL and
43.28 -> others. You can also use it from the web as well
45.92 -> as through desktop apps on Mac and Windows. When you first open the app
50.239 -> you'll be asked to select some artists that you like so YouTube Music can help
54.399 -> narrow down the types of music that it'll play for you. When you get to the
57.76 -> main screen you'll see that the layout is
59.84 -> pretty simple: new releases at the top followed by mixes especially for you.
64.479 -> There are a couple of mixes that i want to draw your attention to.
67.68 -> The new release mix is a playlist updated every Friday of 30 new songs
72.4 -> that youtube selects just for you based off your music
75.84 -> preferences. The discover mix is a 50 song playlist updated every Wednesday
80.96 -> with songs from artists that you already like as well as other songs that youtube
85.119 -> thinks you'll like based off of your preferences.
87.84 -> Your mix is an endless personalized music playlist think of it like a radio
92.32 -> station based off only the music and artists you like to
95.52 -> listen to. The Your Likes playlist is a playlist made up entirely of the music
100.4 -> you've given a thumbs up to on youtube music on mobile. Down at the
104.799 -> bottom of the app you'll see three tabs home explore and library
109.439 -> the navigation bar with those tabs remains there throughout the app so it's
113.36 -> easy to move back and forth between these sections.
116.24 -> On desktop these icons are actually located at the top of the app
120.32 -> if you continue to scroll down on the home screen you'll see more collections
124.079 -> of playlists based either on what you've listened to before
127.28 -> or what's currently popular or in the genres youtube thinks you'll like.
131.36 -> You can also of course create your own playlists
134.4 -> as well and we'll talk about how to do that a little later on
137.76 -> in the library section of the app. At the top of the app you'll see a chromecast
141.84 -> button and a search button casting in youtube music allows you to
145.92 -> cast music to google devices like smart speakers, smart displays, tvs
150.959 -> or groups of google cast devices. On a
153.92 -> mobile device just click the cast button to bring up the list of speakers that
157.68 -> you already have the ability to cast to over wi-fi select the speaker or speaker
162.4 -> group and your music will then start playing on that speaker or speaker group.
166.4 -> While casting music if you click the cast button again
169.36 -> you'll see the song currently playing in the volume control if you're casting to
173.36 -> a speaker group you can click the arrow below the pause
176.64 -> icon to display the volume levels for all the speakers in your google cast
181.2 -> speaker group. Now if you're trying to cast music from the
184 -> desktop app know that there's no dedicated cast button just yet but you
188.319 -> can still cast your audio. Click the three dots at the top right
191.92 -> hand corner and then select cast and then select the device or
195.84 -> speaker group that you want to cast to now when you want to play a song and you
199.84 -> click it on the app you'll see a new bar appear at the
203.12 -> bottom of the app. When you click it it'll bring up the now
206.48 -> playing screen that'll take up the entire view.
209.84 -> To go back to the previous view just swipe the now playing screen back down
214.159 -> on mobile or click the bar again on desktop on the mobile app when it first
218.4 -> comes up you'll see some controls by on the album artwork. When you click
222.64 -> on the album artwork again you'll see that you have the options to share
226.08 -> download add to a playlist make album artwork landscape and
230.48 -> cast you can cast the song you're currently playing to a speaker or
234.08 -> speaker group right from this view. If you're not
236.879 -> casting music to a speaker or speaker group you'll also see
240.159 -> a song and video slider up at the top which allows you to switch between the
244.799 -> song or the music video version if available one of the best ways to
249.12 -> improve your experience with youtube music
251.28 -> is when you're listening to a song to give a song that you really like a
254.799 -> thumbs up or give it a thumbs down if you don't
257.519 -> like the song this will help refine your music suggestions over time you can
262.479 -> give a song a thumbs up or down in the youtube app
265.44 -> on mobile and desktop in the now playing screen
268.56 -> and if you're playing music through a smart speaker or an android phone you
272 -> can actually tell the google assistant that you either like a song or don't
275.68 -> like a song and the google assistant will actually
278.08 -> give that song either a thumbs up or a thumbs down
281.44 -> let's look at a few other main parts of the now playing screen
285.04 -> the ability to scroll through to part of a song skip back
288.32 -> skip forward play slash pause you can also skip forward or skip back a track
293.28 -> by swiping on the album artwork to see the songs that youtube
296.96 -> music is planning to play next swipe up the bar at the bottom you
300.479 -> can then reshuffle the automated list of songs in the up next
304.4 -> section youtube tries to figure out what songs to play next
307.6 -> based on the song you pick to listen to as well as your various music tastes
312 -> you can click lyrics to see the lyrics of the song currently playing when
315.6 -> available and related which will show you songs
318.24 -> you might also like based off what you're currently listening to playlists
321.84 -> you might like similar artists and more from the
324.56 -> artists that you're currently listening to
326.56 -> now swiping back up to the now playing section with the album artwork
330.56 -> there's one last part of this view to go over and that's the three dots up at the
334.56 -> top when you click that you're going to see
336.56 -> a lot of options first up is start radio this will start a radio station based
341.44 -> off of the song you're currently playing radio stations will start with the song
345.28 -> you chose and will then play other songs by other artists as well as
349.28 -> songs by the same artist that you chose play next we'll add the
353.28 -> song to the play next section and to q will also add the song
357.28 -> to the current queue of songs and to library which adds that song to
361.199 -> your library download which downloads the song for
364.4 -> offline listening add to playlist allows you to add the song to an
368.16 -> existing playlist you've already created or it'll allow you to create a new one
373.36 -> go to album will take you to the album where the song is from
376.639 -> in the album view you'll see the album artwork with the album
380 -> title and three key buttons add to library
383.28 -> download and the three dots add to library will add this song to your
387.84 -> youtube music library download will download the song to your device
391.84 -> and the three dots will give you some similar options that we've seen
395.12 -> in the now plain three dots menu the album view will also
398.8 -> allow you to start playing the album or shuffle it and if you just want to add
402.88 -> specific songs to your library and not the whole
405.68 -> album you can click the three dots next to the song
408.4 -> in the album view and select add to library
411.599 -> back to the three dots menu on the now playing page go to artist will take you
415.68 -> to the artists page in youtube music this will show you the
418.96 -> artist's latest release top songs allow you to shuffle a
422.4 -> playlist of their songs or start a radio with that artist see
426.479 -> their albums in singles videos other artists related to this one
430.56 -> that fans might like and an about section giving you more
434.24 -> information about the artist and their total view count across
437.919 -> youtube the last options on the three dots menu are
440.88 -> share which allows you to share the song through your social platforms or send to
445.199 -> friends and family report which allows you to report
448.16 -> content that might violate youtube's terms of service and then
451.599 -> stats for nerds alright so that's the now plain view now there's one more way
455.44 -> you can actually play music from youtube music and that's by using a smart
459.28 -> assistant you can use the google assistant on
461.919 -> android devices or other devices like smart speakers and
465.199 -> smart displays that support the google assistant
468.16 -> to make youtube music your default service go into your google assistant
472.24 -> settings select services then music and then
475.759 -> select youtube music if you're an iphone user you can use
479.28 -> siri to play music from youtube music just tell siri to play a song or artist
484.24 -> on youtube music and as long as you have the youtube music app downloaded on your
488.16 -> phone it should work now let's move to the second section of the app which is
491.919 -> the explorer tab the explorer tab is divided into several
495.599 -> sections new albums and singles and moods and
498.56 -> genres plus new music videos one of the biggest advantages that
502.479 -> youtube music has over its competition is music videos and that's thanks to the
506.96 -> fact that youtube music leverages youtube the world's largest
511.52 -> video platform and arguably the world's largest music catalog
515.68 -> thanks to the sheer number of indie artists
518.719 -> who upload to the platform when you search for a song in the app you'll see
522.56 -> both songs and videos in your search results
525.44 -> you can always switch back and forth between songs
528.16 -> and the music videos in the app there's also a setting in the app that will
531.519 -> force youtube music to default to audio only or album versions of songs the last
536.88 -> section of the youtube music app to talk about is the library section and this
540.8 -> highlights another key difference between youtube music and the
544.08 -> competition youtube music lets you upload up to a
547.76 -> hundred thousand songs from your own personal music
550.72 -> library to the service you can do this by going to
554.44 -> music.youtube.com and dragging your music files anywhere on the screen
558.48 -> or click on your profile picture and then select upload music
562.32 -> back to the app the library section will show you your downloads which you can
566.16 -> set manually and the service will also automatically download
569.6 -> some of your most listened to songs and playlists like
572.64 -> songs that you've given a thumbs up to youtube also created a playlist called
576.72 -> your offline mixtape that'll include a lot of the songs it's noticed that
580.48 -> you've listened to quite a bit the next section in library
583.6 -> is playlists it's from here that you can see the playlist that you've created
587.279 -> from your youtube music library do note that it'll sometimes include playlists
591.44 -> from youtube that include music videos that you may have created a while back
595.839 -> which consists of mainly videos in this view you can also
599.279 -> create a new playlist you can give it a title and set its privacy so yes
604.24 -> you can make playlists public so they're easy to share with your friends
608.32 -> the artists songs and albums section are all pretty similar so let's just go
612.72 -> ahead and dive into one of them the song section will show you songs
616.399 -> you've uploaded or added to your library as well as songs that you've liked in
620.56 -> youtube music all in one view if you want to view the
623.6 -> songs you've uploaded to your library click on uploads at the top
627.2 -> subscriptions at the bottom will show you the artists you've subscribed to on
631.04 -> youtube you can subscribe to artists in youtube music through the artist
634.8 -> page but do note at the time that we've recorded this video when you subscribe
638.959 -> to an artist through youtube music you will also be
641.76 -> subscribed to that artist on youtube alright well that covers the
646 -> main different sections of the youtube music
648.88 -> app before we wrap up i want to quickly cover some
652.24 -> important things that you can find in the settings
655.279 -> of the youtube music app you can get to settings by clicking on your youtube
659.2 -> profile icon at the top right hand corner of both the
662.56 -> mobile and desktop app then select settings at the top you'll
666.56 -> see library and downloads this will show you how much storage
670 -> youtube music's downloads are taking up you can also set the download quality
674.079 -> for downloaded music and video quality for videos
677.36 -> enabling smart downloads will trigger youtube music to save your favorite
681.279 -> music offline automatically when you're on
683.839 -> wi-fi with sufficient battery going back you'll see options like
687.519 -> stream via wi-fi only so it doesn't hog your mobile data or don't play music
692.32 -> videos which will default youtube music to
694.72 -> playing audio only or album versions of songs here you can
698.56 -> also set what audio quality you want on wi-fi versus mobile data youtube music
703.519 -> also has an equalizer setting a restricted mode to filter out explicit
707.6 -> songs captions preferences and double tap to see advanced just
712.079 -> enables stats for nerds also you'll see the ability to transfer
715.68 -> from google play music to youtube music clicking this will guide you through the
719.44 -> process of transferring all of your music from google play music to youtube
723.6 -> music do note that it just copies over your
726.079 -> music and data it doesn't remove anything from google play music improve
730.56 -> your recommendations will bring you to the artist bubble screen where you can
734.16 -> select which artists you like to help improve your recommendations
737.76 -> like you saw when you first started using youtube music
740.72 -> the privacy and location settings contain settings to pause your watch
744.72 -> history pause search history use your play music
747.519 -> history and also you can pause location based recommendations as well
751.68 -> lastly let's talk about the paid version versus the free version of youtube music
756.48 -> now the version of youtube music that i use is the paid version
760.16 -> the free version does allow you to play specific songs by specific artists as
764.639 -> well as radio stations all that stuff just with ads now the
769.36 -> premium version of youtube music does come with some pretty significant
773.92 -> benefits including ad free listening plus
776.88 -> background play which will allow you to play music in the background of your
780.56 -> mobile device even when you close the app download music offline
784.32 -> use audio only mode this is the feature i demoed where you only want to listen
788.56 -> to the album version of a song without loading the music video version if
792.48 -> you're traveling to a different country where youtube music
795.2 -> isn't available the music content that's available to you
798.24 -> at home will travel with you for up to six months
801.519 -> so you can keep listening to all of your favorite music and
804.72 -> your downloads will remain available to you for 30 days without an
808.56 -> internet connection the last main benefit of youtube music premium is the
812.48 -> ability to shuffle all of your downloads youtube music premium costs 9.99 a month
817.92 -> here in the united states and that's not actually the version of the service i
821.6 -> use i use what's called youtube premium
824.16 -> which costs 12.99 per month here in the us
827.12 -> and what youtube premium gives you is you do get youtube music
830.959 -> premium plus you get an ad free experience
834.24 -> on youtube itself for just three dollars a month more so for me
838.48 -> that was totally worth it now if you like this video and found it helpful
842.88 -> make sure you hit that thumbs up button below and subscribe to the channel
846.399 -> to see more how-to videos like this one as well as more tech related videos
851.839 -> for 6 Months Later, I'm Josh Teder, thanks for watching.
