0 -> Hey, everyone.
4.32 -> This is D. Movieman.
4.983 -> Fellow cinephile, popcorn
addict, and emerging film critic
15.06 -> coming to you with reliable recaps,
17.16 -> reviews, and reactions.
19.44 -> And today I'm coming to you all
21.42 -> with a special ranking of
23.16 -> my Favorite Television Series of 2022.
26.1 -> Listen, 2021 was such a dynamic
31.86 -> and interesting year for television.
33.6 -> As someone who has, you know,
35.82 -> watched television for plenty of years,
38.52 -> I think 2021 was a deep dive year for me.
41.88 -> Especially appreciating the variety and diversity
45.6 -> and the types of stories that are being told
47.82 -> across various platforms as well.
50.22 -> And 2022 was no different,
52.5 -> so without further ado,
54.42 -> let's hop into my honorable mentions.
57.6 -> We have Hacks: Season 2 on HBO Max.
60.66 -> The only reason that Hacks: Season 2
63.36 -> is not on my actual list is simply because
65.88 -> I was focusing on new shows
68.1 -> in their premier seasons,
69.42 -> but season two was just as solid
72.06 -> as the first, if not more.
73.5 -> It actually made #1 on my ranking of
77.16 -> Favorite TV shows from 2021,
79.08 -> and I can only hope that Season 3
82.8 -> will be just as good, if not better.
84.96 -> Next, we have 1899 on Netflix.
87.78 -> I remember being so hyped for this one
90.3 -> when that teaser dropped like over a year
92.82 -> before the show actually premiered,
95.04 -> and when it finally dropped, I was so into it.
98.94 -> The costumes, the diversity of the actors
102.12 -> and the performances, and the languages,
104.16 -> and the mystery.
106.56 -> The aesthetics?
107.52 -> Like, I was all in.
109.56 -> Sadly, however, the show was not given
112.74 -> the opportunity to continue.
114.3 -> I suppose I shouldn't be surprised
117.18 -> given the platform that it was on.
119.28 -> But I think it's really unfortunate and sad that,
123.36 -> given the success of Dark on that same platform,
126.6 -> that this show was not given the opportunity
129.72 -> to grow into something significant and special.
133.8 -> And now at #10, we have Rap Sh!t on HBO Max.
137.88 -> This one was a fairly big surprise for me.
141.36 -> Because although I do enjoy Issa Rae,
144.18 -> and I was excited to see what she would
146.46 -> come up with post-Insecure.....
148.14 -> When I heard that the story was about some
151.44 -> aspiring rappers trying to
break into the music industry,
154.14 -> I was like.....hold up!
157.74 -> I absolutely have an appreciation for rap,
160.2 -> especially old school rap.
161.58 -> But I was thinking,
162.78 -> how many times are we going to see this story?
165.06 -> How many times can we tell this story?
167.28 -> So, I was very iffy going in,
169.68 -> and even in the beginning,
171.06 -> I was like....okay.
172.2 -> This is just something that's
stereotypical and just....flat.
178.08 -> But I am so glad that I stuck with it,
180.96 -> because I love how it approaches that
183.18 -> musical dynamic with a different perspective.
185.7 -> It is about rap, but it's about the rawness of rap
190.38 -> as a musical form,
191.58 -> the creativity and artistry behind it,
194.4 -> the lyricism,
195.6 -> the impact of social media,
197.82 -> building a following, and just as quickly
200.7 -> losing a following if you're not careful.
202.92 -> As someone who has seen these
kind of narratives before,
205.8 -> I thought the show took a very
208.02 -> unique and fresh approach to that.
210.12 -> I also like that it showcased
another side of Miami
213.06 -> that some people aren't aware of,
215.34 -> and that we don't always get a chance to see.
218.1 -> At #9, we have Minx on HBO Max.
221.46 -> It tells the story of a very
high strong radical feminist
225.48 -> who joins forces with an adult magazine publisher
228.96 -> to create an erotic magazine for women.
232.92 -> Although I am not a prude, my tolerance for
236.52 -> stories and narratives that
lean into being real raunchy
240.24 -> and sexually over the top?
243.18 -> Yeah, it's kind of low.
244.62 -> It only works if it's the right story
246.96 -> and the dynamics are interesting,
248.7 -> and we find a way to just bring something new
252.12 -> to whatever story is being told.
254.34 -> And I think what makes this so enjoyable
256.68 -> is the really unique dynamic
between Joyce and Doug,
263.52 -> played by Ophelia Lovibond and Jack Johnson,
266.4 -> and how this magazine starts
to affect their community,
270.84 -> starts to affect society,
272.88 -> and just has an unprecedented impact
276.54 -> on the people around them.
277.92 -> And of course, it takes place in
the 70's, which is always fun.
281.58 -> So I really appreciated just
what this show had to say,
285.54 -> and it not being afraid to go there.
288.48 -> Because there are some things that
290.64 -> my eyes were not ready for,
293.52 -> and still are not ready for.
296.34 -> And #8, we have the Gilded Age on HBO Max.
301.02 -> It tells the story of the
social dynamics and conflicts
304.74 -> between the members of the Nouveau Riche,
306.66 -> and the established members of old money society
309.54 -> amidst the boom years of the 1880's.
312.24 -> If you weren't already aware,
314.04 -> I did do a series recap of the first season.
316.74 -> It was such a blast.
318.84 -> Especially digging into the historical background
321.36 -> and context of the story.
323.04 -> I was especially impressed seeing the reality
325.86 -> of the black upper class during that time,
328.2 -> when it's a part of history
that is rarely showcased
332.64 -> was really impressive.
334.32 -> I'm a huge history buff and period piece fan,
338.28 -> so it was right up my alley.
340.26 -> It also helps that this was created and written
343.02 -> by Julian Fellowes,
344.28 -> who created the massively
popular series Downton Abbey.
347.88 -> And while the show isn't quite
on the level of that one,
351 -> I really love the foundation
that's been set up here.
354.42 -> I love the costumes,
356.22 -> I love the production design and the aesthetics,
358.8 -> and I really enjoy the
performances and casting as well.
361.92 -> Especially Carrie Coon, Morgan Spector,
365.1 -> Christine Baranski and Denée Benton.
367.62 -> At #7 we have Wednesday on Netflix.
371.46 -> I will be honest when this was first announced,
374.88 -> I was like....why???
376.5 -> The first two Addams Family films are not only
379.98 -> two of my favorite films of all time,
382.08 -> it was also one of my earliest experiences
384.72 -> with film as a young child.
386.58 -> So, I am very connected to that franchise.
389.22 -> From the original series from the 60's,
391.8 -> to the animated series,
393.3 -> to other films and so on.
395.4 -> But my main worry is that this new show
397.92 -> was going to feel like a cash grab.
399.78 -> It was going to feel so unnecessary,
402.78 -> and I just didn't really have high hopes for it.
406.5 -> But I was willing to give it a chance,
408.3 -> and I am so glad that I did.
411 -> Because man,
413.34 -> Wednesday was a really, really fun time.
416.1 -> As someone who is really
not into teenage narratives
419.46 -> and teenage stories and is just not a huge fan
422.88 -> of those kind of dynamics,
424.08 -> I felt like this worked so well,
426.12 -> and I think so much of what made it work
428.94 -> was of course Jenna Ortega's
433.38 -> spectacular performance as Wednesday.
435.72 -> I like that this wasn't just Disney Channel.
438.48 -> It wasn't afraid to really
go dark when it needed to.
441.42 -> It was creepy when it needed to be,
443.94 -> it was touching when it needed to be,
446.28 -> and overall, I think it did a really great job
449.7 -> of expanding the universe
that is The Addams Family.
453.42 -> Kooky weird dance moves and all.
456.42 -> *Snap, snap*
458.16 -> At #6, we have Riches on Prime Video.
461.82 -> It tells the story of the
leader of a cosmetics empire
465.48 -> who dies unexpectedly,
467.34 -> and a war for control over his empire
470.04 -> falls between the American
children from his first marriage,
473.22 -> and the British children and wife in his second.
476.04 -> I am a huge fan of Deborah Ayorinde.
478.62 -> I think not only is she stunningly beautiful,
480.9 -> but she's a great actress.
482.64 -> But I have been so frustrated
with the type of roles
485.58 -> that she's been relegated to.
486.9 -> Just seeing how things would play
out for those characters.....
490.56 -> I was not happy about it.
493.08 -> If you've seen my series review for Them,
497.04 -> you know that I went in.
498.9 -> I did not have a lot of positive things to say.
501.78 -> But I did at least mention
that with the performances,
506.34 -> including Deborah Ayorinde,
507.96 -> I hoped that someone would recognize that
510.12 -> she was capable of doing more than just.....this.
514.26 -> I really hope that it would be a launching pad for
her to go on and do bigger and better and I am so
521.58 -> relieved and happy to say that this is a great
example of what I was hoping for I thought the
527.64 -> Dynamics of the show were so interesting because
we don't always get to see this perspective of
533.7 -> black imagery all the time we're talking about
wealth and this massive Empire and even outside
538.8 -> of that piece we are seeing the blending of
these various nationalities coming together
544.8 -> American Nigerian and English I was worried
that the business aspect of the show might feel
551.64 -> derivative or just kind of bland but they managed
to really make that aspect of the show intriguing
557.46 -> and interesting and with plenty of twists and
turns and I just think that the performances
563.82 -> overall especially Sarah Niles as Claudia Richards
talk about an antagonist she is so great and it's
573.48 -> even more special because it's a complete 180
from her role as Dr. Sharon on Ted lasso I am
581.46 -> really hoping to see this one return for a season
two at number five we have I love that for you on
588.54 -> Showtime it tells the story of an aspiring host
for a Shopping Channel network who ends up telling
594.6 -> a very complicated lie in order to keep her job
there after an audition goes terribly awry the
602.1 -> only awareness I had of Vanessa Bayer was her role
in office Christmas party and it had been some
608.16 -> years since I had watched that film but she is so
hilarious in this lead role and I was surprised
615.54 -> to learn that some of the Dynamics of the show is
actually based on her own childhood which involved
622.68 -> a very precarious situation I also love that the
always funny and criminally underrated Jennifer
630 -> Lewis aka the mother of black Hollywood has a role
here and her performance is just everything you
638.16 -> would expect if you know Jennifer Lewis then you
know you know what she brings but I also love that
644.58 -> there were so many layers to her character and
her performance and I mean chef's kiss as someone
652.26 -> who grew up seeing the Home Shopping Network
occasionally on the television and being oddly
658.14 -> fascinated by it this show is a uniquely funny
look at that world that profession and the many
666.48 -> eccentric personalities that Encompass it do you
really want to do you really want to taste it well
674.16 -> um as awkward as it is to say yes yes I do at
number five we have Peacemaker on HBO Max being
683.46 -> honest again as someone who is not a huge fan
of John Cena and was really not a huge fan of
689.16 -> Peacemaker in The Last Suicide Squad even though
it was an enjoyable film overall the last thing
694.98 -> I even wanted to entertain much less watch
was a spin-off series centered around that
701.28 -> character but oh man I am so glad I gave this
one a chance I mean ridiculously catchy theme
709.68 -> song and opening title sequence aside this was
just such an offensive violent inappropriate in
717.36 -> your face addition to DC's roster this also
is by far one of the best Ensemble casts I
725.22 -> have seen in a long time everyone is hilarious
everyone is entertaining everyone is enjoyable
732.54 -> everyone puts in work and contributes to bring
this entire is show and story together and man
742.38 -> what a Time and at number four we have Bel
Air on peacock again there is something to
750.06 -> be said about childhood experiences and The
Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was absolutely a part
756.48 -> of that I actually remember when the idea of
this was presented some years back with that
762.12 -> fan film that was written and directed by Morgan
Cooper so once it actually you know evolved into
769.14 -> an actual television show I was excited but I
was also nervous again can we do justice to the
778.2 -> source material without it feeling like a cash
grab and just feel like we're doing this just
783.12 -> to profit off of the source material thankfully
I was proven wrong I actually like being proven
790.2 -> wrong especially if it means I end up having a
good time and I really enjoy myself that is fine
796.08 -> so I was happy to be wrong this show was such
a breath of fresh air which I suppose fitting
807.66 -> I really appreciated the heart and the depth that
this new series had the approach that it took to
815.46 -> the story and the new direction that it went
with so many of the characters while I thought
821.88 -> the performances were excellent across the board I
have to give it to Jabari Banks as Will Smith that
829.8 -> is an iconic character played by an iconic actor
so stepping into those shoes is not easy but man
838.62 -> when I tell you this man was acting that is not
an understatement the emotions and the intensity
846.66 -> I was like it really caught me off guard in some
very specific moments I just appreciated how
853.74 -> likable and enjoyable the various characters were
and that we got to see so many different dynamics
859.68 -> of West Philadelphia of Bel-Air of the social
class and racial Dynamics and all of that and
867.24 -> I love that all of this was handled in a way that
didn't feel reductive or diminutive I'm excited to
875.46 -> say that season two is dropping next month and I
am so excited and ready and willing to see so much
884.76 -> more at number three we have House of the Dragon
on HBO Max I don't think I can say a lot that
891.9 -> hasn't been said already we know what a cultural
phenomenon the original Game of Thrones was and
898.32 -> we also know how that ended so there was plenty
of trepidation about this series regardless of
907.14 -> it being a prequel series but I must admit it was
quite enjoyable and quite traumatizing re-entering
914.58 -> the world of Westeros again I really appreciated
the contrast of everything being relegated to
921.18 -> King's Landing and dealing with the claustrophobic
nature of this circle an environment of really
929.16 -> horrible people doing really horrible things but
besides the production values and the rich World
937.26 -> building that we get here the performances are
top-notch as well I will admit that I had some
944.64 -> issues with the time jumps and the disconnect
I felt with some characters because of that and
951.12 -> that whole element where we seemingly get ageless
Immortal vampires out of nowhere no that is not a
959.94 -> spoiler if you haven't seen the show but um for
those who know you know what I'm talking about
966.42 -> really solid foundation here plenty to build off
of and I hope that the ball won't be dropped now
973.32 -> that we are back in this world and I'm really
hoping that it can become something that everyone
979.62 -> can really love and appreciate and really get
excited for once again and at number two we
986.94 -> have Interview with the Vampire on AMC plus
once again early childhood experiences this
995.16 -> seems to be a recurring theme but uh I digress
so for me the 1994 Interview with the Vampire
1002.9 -> film was not only my first introduction to
vampires but it was really my introduction
1008.96 -> to the horror genre overall on the one hand
it certainly Disturbed me and freaked me out
1016.28 -> unexpectedly there was this one time late at
night things got a little too intense and I
1020.78 -> literally had to press the channel button on
the VCR yes I said VCR yes I'm telling my age
1029 -> but let's move on but on the other hand I was
also really intrigued and it was such a great
1035.9 -> introduction because it really highlighted the
tragedy and conflict behind what a vampire is
1043.52 -> and that identity and similar to a couple of the
other series I mentioned I was hoping that this
1051.2 -> was not just a reimagining that was a cash grab
building off of the franchise the original and I
1059.78 -> you know I had some trepidation about it but for
whatever reason I was probably one of a handful
1066.38 -> of people that was just really really excited for
it even though there were obvious changes and the
1072.8 -> perspective was different the casting you know
I was kind of like I don't know but it's just
1078.56 -> like because I love Interview with the Vampire
so much and because that world is so rich that
1084.02 -> Anne Rice has created I was like I don't know I
just like I'm I'm here for it I will never forget
1093.92 -> watching that first episode late
at night and just being like
1100.94 -> a stop just read slurps read the slower slower
I was quite shocked and horrified to see how
1111.62 -> violent and sexual and in your face that it was
especially since the original film took a much
1119.9 -> more minimalist approach to that yes there was
blood but it wasn't like splatters of blood and
1127.7 -> we weren't punching through faces I was like wow
now for the people who are purists when it comes
1135.08 -> to Source material this show is not for you if
you can you know accept that this is a different
1141.44 -> interpretation and a different perspective then
I think you'll be fine but if you're like this
1146.9 -> is how the characters are supposed to look this
is the this isn't for you and for me I fell right
1152.9 -> in the middle I have my appreciation of the book
of the 1994 film and the series and I feel like I
1163.58 -> can separate my appreciation for all three I also
remember being really iffy on Sam Reed's Lestat
1170.06 -> and he ended up winning me over and maybe too much
because there were certainly some episodes where
1175.76 -> I was quite heated quite aggravated and I was
a slide I was not happy I will admit that not
1183.26 -> all the changes worked as far as the new take on
the story some of it was like and despite having
1190.04 -> that awareness of all three there were times where
like I could feel kind of that awareness of each
1197.72 -> one kind of wrestling with each other like I like
this but I don't know if I like this I think this
1203.72 -> did this better but I kind of like this so it was
a really interesting experience but overall it was
1210.32 -> absolutely an experience I appreciated and again
let's bring on season two and you know let's see
1218.42 -> what else is going on with the Vampire Chronicles
I would love to see that franchise and that world
1224.12 -> continue to expand from here because if this
is any indication of where we're going to go
1229.1 -> I am down and for my number one series of 2022
that honor Goes To None other than the bear on
1242.66 -> Hulu slash FX it tells the story of a young chef
from the world of high class dining who returns
1249.26 -> home to Chicago to run his family's Italian
beef sandwich shop in the wake of his older
1254.3 -> brothers untimely passing I don't know how the
recurring theme of this ranking became childhood
1259.88 -> experiences but I have to throw that in there
again because this show takes place in Chicago
1266.84 -> which naturally is my hometown and there's just
something so significant about seeing Chicago
1272.66 -> represented in any movie or TV show and I'm so
happy that I can add this series to the roster
1279.74 -> I mean just so many memories and so many thoughts
that kept flowing back the more I watched this and
1286.1 -> just even remembering driving through the city and
literally driving past shops just like this one as
1293.3 -> someone who has not had the full food industry
experience as far as a job save for a movie
1300.56 -> theater concession stand I love that this series
gave me a sneak peek into that like it gave me an
1307.94 -> Insight of what that environment really looks like
in all of its chaos and confusion and just like
1317.36 -> I was really taken aback this show was quite
stressful to watch at times it was really giving
1324.2 -> me uncut gems because that film who had me up
to here and so the fact that I felt that just
1332.3 -> watching the episodes I can only begin to imagine
what it's like for those who do work in the food
1338.24 -> service industry and have to contend with all of
that so genuinely you know hats off to you because
1345.92 -> you know that I I cannot even begin to imagine
what that's like I also wasn't expecting this to
1352.76 -> be a part of the story but I love how it handled
grief loss mental health and just the day-to-day
1360.5 -> challenges of life there is so much that can be
said about Jeremy Allen White but I think that
1366.44 -> his performance really speaks for itself and so
much of it isn't necessarily his dialogue or his
1372.02 -> delivery of that it is his facial expressions
it's how well he emotes without saying a word
1378.44 -> give this man all the awards please I think this
was a great year for ensemble cast because I have
1384.86 -> to say this was another really enjoyable really
quirky really eccentric chaotic ensemble cast the
1392.6 -> bear was such an unlikely series it feels like it
just kind of came out of nowhere but I find that
1399.08 -> some of those Quiet Series and some of those
quiet projects those can be some of the most
1404.48 -> impactful series and narratives and stories of
all and I can absolutely say that about the bear
1411.14 -> so I absolutely had to give the bear it's much
deserved flowers and position it as number one
1417.38 -> in a very very Dynamic year for television so
that wraps up my ranking please feel free to
1425.78 -> let me know what you thought of this ranking are
there any of these shows that you got the chance
1430.58 -> to see do any of them sound interesting did you
watch some of these and they disappointed you
1435.8 -> and you know what might your ranking be for any
show it can even be it doesn't have to be 10 or
1441.62 -> more but it can be you know just uh some shows
that you watched some series that you caught and
1446.78 -> you really really enjoyed so please feel free
to let me know and leave your thoughts below.
