Content

2.24 -> An icon reloaded - that’s the slogan VW has for its all-new I.D.
6.95 -> Buzz.
8.639 -> The fully electric van is an homage to the old T1 transporter, or Microbus, from back
13.889 -> in the day.
14.999 -> And ever since the prototype was first displayed back in 2017, there's been plenty of buzz
20.99 -> surrounding it!
22.22 -> REV's Emmanuel Schäfer put it to the test.
26.359 -> The general driving impression in the I.D.
28.75 -> Buzz is absolutely neat.
31.689 -> The car is very silent.
34.48 -> It is very comfortable in here.
36.501 -> You sit rather high, just like you did in the old T1.
39.94 -> Of course, you sit higher than in a T1, because cars simply have gotten bigger during the
44.83 -> years.
45.83 -> So, that's no wonder.
47.69 -> The modern twist on the old Microbus comes with a 77kWh battery, which gives it a range
53.78 -> of up to 423km.
58.08 -> How much of the swinging sixties and the original T1 feeling is there in this new car?
68.33 -> Driving the old T1 was an adventure.
70.549 -> It was loud.
72.149 -> The engine was way too small.
74.67 -> It was under motorized.
77.49 -> You would have a hard time accelerating.
79.74 -> You needed to shift, it was clunky, it was hopping around.
85.82 -> Let's just say it had plenty of "character".
94.429 -> Of course, all of that makes the T1 somewhat lovable, but you cannot do that in a modern
100.99 -> car.
101.99 -> People will say: What the hell are you trying to sell me right here?
104.799 -> This is not a finished product.
106.85 -> And that's why the ID Buzz is a very smooth ride.
110.96 -> This, despite the fact that it doesn’t come with adaptive suspension.
116.159 -> VW s first car, the Type 1, was better known as the Beetle.
123.509 -> And at some point during the production of the Beetle, a Dutch importer saw that workers
130.44 -> at Wolfsburg used parts of the Beetle to build their own "Plattenwagen", a makeshift "flatbed",
138.25 -> so to say, with parts from the Beetle.
140.49 -> And he thought: If you put a box onto that chassis, you would have a neat little transporter
147.26 -> and that was the birth of the Type 2, the T1, the first Volkswagen transporter.
153.63 -> "Tireless and always ready for action" is how VW described the Microbus in its ads.
160.27 -> And these were no empty promises.
162.92 -> Because even today, countless T1s still survive, cheerfully chugging along.
168.05 -> T1 and T2 models sold like crazy in Europe.
173.93 -> Of course, people liked the idea of the vehicle and it could be used for almost anything.
180.04 -> Fire truck, ambulance, delivery vehicle, taxi, you name it.
185.94 -> “The double-leaf side door and rear hatch allow for quick and effortless loading and
199.791 -> unloading.
200.791 -> It doesn't matter to the VW what it transports - young people or little piglets."
211.23 -> And it could fit 8 adults without a problem.
218.37 -> Whether we will see the ID buzz as a fire truck, it can be doubted.
224.91 -> But, what definitely will be seen, is the ID Buzz as delivery vehicle, because it also
230.58 -> exists in a cargo version.
233.46 -> The I.D.
234.46 -> Buzz CARGO can fit up to 3900 liters and can accomodate a payload of 650 kilos.
241.71 -> It can also TOW up to 1000 kilos.
247.73 -> Engine wise, just like the old T1, the I.D.
250.791 -> Buzz is rear-wheel driven, but it has more than six times the power of the old machine,
257.501 -> which had around 30 horsepower.
260.079 -> The I.D.
261.079 -> Buzz comes with 204 horsepower, 150 kilowatts, always feels decently motorized.
266.509 -> You will not have a problem like you had in the old T1.
269.729 -> Put in your wife, put in some friends and all of the stuff you need for vacation and
274.9 -> then you would be really worried if you would make it up the hill.
280.53 -> No problem with the I.D.
282.409 -> Buzz.
283.409 -> How fast can you get up that hill?
285.639 -> The top speed of the I.D.
286.939 -> Buzz is capped at 145km/h.
293.259 -> Putting the two cars next to each other, the similarities will become apparent.
297.27 -> Of course, the two tone colors and then the way the front shifts to the bottom.
302.47 -> It's the same in both cars.
304.21 -> Of course, this one is a little steeper, but they changed it, so this one is more appealing
309.229 -> and of course you have the big VW logo, which you can also find right here.
319.6 -> On the side.
320.6 -> You have these small windows between the window at the side and the window and the windscreen.
326.71 -> And they have the same thing with this car right here.
329.11 -> And those are only some of the things that those two cars have in common.
333.63 -> And just like its predecessor, the I.D.
335.669 -> Buzz has short overhangs, which make it easily maneuverable.
339.99 -> A thing that made the T1 so successful, was its feeling of freedom.
345.289 -> You would simply get into your car and drive wherever you like.
348.699 -> Fuel tank is empty?
350.319 -> Fill it up at the gas station and get going again.
352.8 -> No problem whatsoever.
354.349 -> With the ID Buzz however, it's not that easy.
356.889 -> First of all, if your battery is empty, you've got to find a charging station, which can
361.099 -> also be a hassle in itself.
363.629 -> And then you have to wait.
364.749 -> In an ideal state from five to 80% it will charge in 30 minutes, but if it's not, it
370.229 -> will take even longer.
372.03 -> Doesn't really sound like freedom to me.
374.81 -> Slits on the D-pillar of the I.D Buzz are reminiscent of the air-intakes meant to cool
379.43 -> the T1's engine.
386.4 -> Another thing that made the T1 successful, was its price.
390.06 -> 5850 Deutschmark, that was affordable at the time.
394.8 -> If you put that into nowadays prices, that would be around 17-18,000€.
399.68 -> And now we talk about the price of the ID Buzz: More than €64,000, so that's three
404.659 -> to four times the price.
406.21 -> And that is not exactly affordable for everyone.
416.089 -> While driving the T1, you had to do everything yourself.
420.35 -> Shifting, adjusting the mirrors or adjusting the air flow of the windows.
427.039 -> All of this can be done by the car nowadays.
431.249 -> You can adjust the mirrors electrically.
434.029 -> The car doesn’t need any shifting since it's an electric car, the climate control,
437.759 -> you can set it to auto and then it will do it for you.
440.219 -> And it also has a bunch of assistance systems that will keep you in lane, keep the distance
445.36 -> to the car in front of you, will also help you overtaking on the autobahn.
450.18 -> It can even park the car itself.
453.349 -> So, you do it one time and then by the press of the button, the car can repeat that parking
459.11 -> manoeuver all on its own.
461.999 -> No matter how narrow your driveway is, if you can do it, the car can do it as well.
471.139 -> You might or might not be a friend of all of these helpers, but they do really work
476.599 -> a charm.
477.599 -> Personally, I am not that much of a fan of the car taking over that many decisions, but
482.721 -> for other people it's definitely a helper and they will appreciate it.
487.71 -> For people that like driving assistance systems, the I.D.
491.79 -> Buzz has more than 30 on offer.
497.27 -> The I.D.
498.27 -> Buzz will come on to European markets already this year.
501.53 -> US customers will have to wait until 2024, because VW is currently working on a bigger,
508.839 -> longer version of the ID Buzz, that will then have three rows of seats, unlike the two rows
515.69 -> this car has right now.
517.69 -> Of course, the bigger version will also come to European markets, but the smaller version
522.75 -> we have right here will not come on to US markets, as it's simply not made for that.
528.16 -> It's too small.
530.54 -> With a length of 4.71 metres and a wheelbase of almost 3 metres, the I.D.
535.8 -> Buzz has plenty of space for passengers.
539.36 -> And the car's interior is made from recycled and recyclable materials.
546.3 -> With an integrated SIM card, the Buzz is always "on" and can receive updates "over the air"
552.06 -> at any time.
557.3 -> Touch-operated buttons on the steering wheel are modern, but require some getting used
561.8 -> to.
562.8 -> And storage is a cinch, with plenty of nooks and crannies scattered throughout the interior.
572.54 -> Even with all passengers on board, the five-seater has plenty of room for luggage, with a capacity
578.82 -> of up to 1,121 liters behind the second row of seats.
586.529 -> Just like the old T1, with the rear seats folded down, the Buzz can be used for camping.
592.19 -> With a width of 1.2 metres between the wheel arches, there's room for a decent-sized bed.
599.52 -> So, how much T1 does the I.D.
604.67 -> Buzz finally have?
605.67 -> There are quite a few things that remind you of the T1, but there are also things that
611.18 -> the I.D.
612.18 -> Buzz does completely different.
613.55 -> So, all in all, a very neat car that will definitely find its friends, and I'm excited
617.87 -> to see, how many of these VW will actually sell.
623 -> The I.D.
624 -> Buzz is definitely an eyecatcher, and its purely electric drivetrain makes it quite
628.72 -> sustainable.
629.72 -> On the downside, it doesn't transport as many people as the T1 did, and it's definitely
635.61 -> way more expensive than it's forerunner back in the day.
639.36 -> Which in some ways makes it as much of a lifestyle choice as the Microbus once was.
