5.42 -> How do you clean baseboards?
7.61 -> How often should you clean baseboards?
10.17 -> What do you clean baseboards with?
12.3 -> What do you clean baseboards with if you have
a bad back and you can't bend over?
16.22 -> Those are great questions, and we're going
to talk about those today.
19.47 -> Hi there.
20.47 -> I'm Angela Brown, and the is Ask a House Cleaner.
23.02 -> This is a show where you get to ask a house cleaning
question
26.3 -> and I get to help you find an answer.
28.29 -> Now today's show is brought to us by Savvy
Cleaner Training, where was train house cleaners
32.239 -> and maids, and Airbnb owners who do all their
own turnover cleaning service, and homeowners
38.18 -> how to clean.
39.85 -> And today we're going to take a lesson right
out of our learning library and we're going
43.5 -> to show you how to clean baseboards.
46.25 -> Now before we begin, I have to tell you that
48.797 -> the hallmark of a good house cleaner are clean baseboards.
52.96 -> And so at every cleaning, every time you vacuum
the floor, you're going to clean the baseboards.
58.199 -> I know what you're thinking, "Oh my word.
61.059 -> Every cleaning?"
62.27 -> Yes it's true.
63.879 -> Every single time you vacuum the floor, and
this is the answer to how often should you
68.46 -> clean them.
69.63 -> Every time you vacuum the floor, you should
also clean the baseboards.
73.56 -> Here's the reason why.
75.04 -> As you open the door to your house, dust blows
into your house.
78.53 -> And it's bee pollen, and it's all different
kinds of stuff from the outside elements.
82.74 -> And as it comes into your house it settles.
84.14 -> Where does it settle?
85.219 -> It settles on the floor and on the baseboards.
88.259 -> And as you track stuff in through the house,
or as the air conditioning kicks on, dust
92.22 -> and air gets blown around the house.
94.619 -> And it doesn't settle on the flat walls, it
hits the walls, and it goes right down and
99.6 -> it settles on the baseboards.
101.27 -> I know.
102.409 -> It's awesome, right?
103.68 -> Because it's so easy to clean.
105.46 -> Now, most baseboards, and here's a secret,
they're painted with a white, semigloss paint.
110.649 -> They are designed to be cleaned frequently.
115.03 -> And because the hallmark of a good house cleaner
are clean baseboards, I'm going to show you
119.02 -> six different ways to clean baseboards.
122.14 -> Now the secret is work smart not hard.
124.84 -> So you're going to use the easiest, quickest,
fastest tool to get the job done with the
131.23 -> least amount of chemicals.
133.21 -> Right?
134.21 -> That's going to be the easiest way to do it.
135.93 -> Okay, so first and foremost, if you go into
a house, let's say this is a deep clean, you
140.319 -> go into a house and the people smoke inside
their house, and there's nicotine, and there's
144.05 -> tar on the sides of their baseboards, we need
a heavy-duty degreaser that's going to cut
149.98 -> through that.
150.98 -> Also, if people do a lot of frying in their
house, and they cook things like bacon and
155.02 -> fried potatoes, and French fries and stuff
like that, there's going to be grease in the air.
160.14 -> And as that grease settles, it's going to
get stuck on everything, but it's also going
163.599 -> to get stuck on the baseboards.
165.2 -> So, we're going to use something like Krud Kutter, which is designed for the environment
169.75 -> and it is biodegradable.
171.5 -> Here's a secret: It also goes on clear.
174.03 -> So if you're going on the baseboard, which
is the white semigloss paint, which is designed
179.04 -> for cleaning chemicals, you can spray this
on, grab a white terrycloth and wipe it off,
184.769 -> and your baseboards are good to go.
187.099 -> Now there's no dwell time, we don't need to
spray it on there and leave it for five or
190.73 -> 10 minutes, or any of that stuff.
192.56 -> Spray it on, wipe it off and you should be
good to go.
195.5 -> So that's way number one, and that's only,
only if you have really dirty, icky, sticky
202.38 -> baseboards. Okay?
203.92 -> The preferred way is just by using a Swiffer Duster.
207.93 -> Now the Swiffer Duster is designed to trap dust.
210.86 -> So you do one sweep and all of a sudden it
grabs the dust and holds it in here while
216.01 -> you vacuum, and now you're good to go.
218.549 -> It's so easy.
220.12 -> And if you have the Swiffer duster on the
back of you, like I always carry mine with
223.36 -> me so that while I'm vacuuming in every room
I can pull it out, I can dust the baseboard
228.75 -> in one move, grab the vacuum, and it's not
two separate projects.
233.69 -> It's kind of the same thing as I go.
236.54 -> All right.
237.74 -> Numbers three and four.
238.92 -> These are the different ways you can clean
them.
240.89 -> One is with a brush, and this is a soft-bristled
brush.
244.28 -> And so let's say that you have lots of dog
and cat hair that have settled on the baseboards.
249.05 -> What you want to do is you want to brush the
baseboards down.
251.98 -> This uses no chemicals whatsoever.
254.019 -> It just grabs all the dust and the dog hair,
and the cat hair and it brushes it out on
259.12 -> the carpet.
260.299 -> Then you vacuum the carpet up, and you're
good to go.
263.23 -> So sometimes it's really heavy-duty gunk,
it's not sticky gunk, it's not gooey gunk,
267.472 -> it's not icky gunk like grease, it's just
like dog-hair dust gunk, so this is a really
272.73 -> good brush for that.
274.24 -> All right, another method that's very similar,
and again, is the same number of steps is
279.36 -> going to be the vacuum attachment hose that
also has a little brush.
283.24 -> This is a really great opportunity to go along
the side of the baseboards.
287.34 -> Again, it's cleaning the baseboard first,
step number one, and then vacuuming the baseboards,
293.18 -> number two.
294.18 -> So it's still a two-step process, but this
will suck all of the dog and cat hair up into
298.86 -> the hose so it doesn't go onto the floor,
which in a second you're going to vacuum again
303.43 -> anyway.
304.43 -> So, it's kind of a choice if you want to use
the brush or the vacuum attachment.
310.41 -> Either of those two ways.
311.41 -> This is way number three and way number four.
313.29 -> All right now way number five.
315.57 -> And I give you permission to use way number
five at any time during a deep clean or maintenance
321.12 -> clean if you need it.
323.35 -> And that is your eraser sponge.
324.81 -> You want to get your eraser sponge wet and
it will wipe up any black marks or scuff marks
330.12 -> that either your shoes or your vacuum hit
while you are inside the room.
334.63 -> So if you go in and you look around and you
do your once-over of the room before you clean,
338.66 -> and you see that "Oh, I got six scuff marks
here that are black," you're going to want
342.17 -> to wet your eraser sponge, have that with
you and then you can wipe those up as you go.
347.85 -> So at any time, you can wipe and erase those
scuff marks with an eraser sponge.
352.82 -> All right and way number six, if you have
a really bad back or bad knees and you can't
357.73 -> bend over, what I recommend is a duster, and
I will leave links in the show notes to this
362.45 -> if you don't this or any of the other things
that we talked about today.
365.82 -> This is one of those that comes with those
tall cleaning kits where it bends and it goes
370.25 -> above the ceiling fans, and the lights and
the window ledges to reach up high.
375 -> This is microfiber and it has all these little
fingers that collect dust.
378.79 -> Now, this head slides right off and it is machine-washable,
381.86 -> so once you use it, you can wash it and use it again, and again.
385.49 -> But literally, you just drop your arm, and
you walk along the side of the room, and you
390.251 -> brush the baseboards as you go and it collects
all the dust so that you don't have to bend
395.49 -> over at all.
396.84 -> And if you're super tall, it does have the
attachment on the end, so you put your telescoping
401.22 -> wand in, and it will let you extend the reach
as long as you need.
405.65 -> So, these are the six ways to clean your baseboards.
409.62 -> Why do we want to clean them?
411.22 -> Because it is the hallmark of a good house
cleaner.
414 -> How often do we want to do it?
415.98 -> At every vacuuming. Right?
418.4 -> Now you know the secrets, now you know how
to do it.
421.13 -> All right, if you found this helpful, please
pass it on to a friend.
424.19 -> If you have questions, you can leave those
in the notes below.
426.86 -> If you like it, give it thumbs up.
428.71 -> And until we meet again, leave the world a
cleaner place than when you found it.
