Nissan X-Trail e-4ORCE Goes Rogue Off-Road (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

Nissan X-Trail e-4ORCE Goes Rogue Off-Road (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

Nissan X-Trail is a compact crossover in production since the early 2000s. It is one of three successors to the Terrano. The first two generations had a boxy shape, and Terrano’s off road genes. The third generation resembled a blown up Qashqai. In the US the X-Trail was offered only in the first generation. Then it was replaced by the Rogue. The second generation Rogue looks like the third X-Trail, and so on. This is the fourth gen X-Trail or the third gen Rogue.

This Nissan X-Trail has an interesting hybrid drivetrain called e-Power, which is combined with e-4ORCE electric AWD system. How does it work, and will it cope off road? Watch this review to find out.

1.079 -> I often hear complaints that electric cars have poor range and in general are too heavy
6.29 -> so even with all-wheel drive they perform poorly off-road how about a hybrid which is
11.69 -> almost electric and it's pretty good off-road this is the Nissan x-trail e-force let's see
19.35 -> how capable it is [Music]
38.62 -> the x-trail is a compact crossover produced since the beginning of the 21st century one
43.41 -> of three successors to the Toronto the first two generations had a boxy shape and one could
49.02 -> see that Toronto's off-road genes in them but the third generation resembled a blown
53.38 -> up Qashqai in the states the X-ray was offered only in the first generation then it was replaced
58.84 -> by the Rogue which was just plain ugly the second generation Rogue looked like the third
64.4 -> generation x-trail and so on so this is the fourth gen x-trail or the third gen Rogue
71.7 -> under the Bonnet Don't Run Away screaming just yet is a one and a half liter three-cylinder
76.93 -> petrol engine but combined with the e-force powertrain which is a kind of hybrid where
81.87 -> the wheels are only driven by an electric motor and the internal combustion engine is
85.689 -> just a generator and here to explain is James crisp senior engineer at Nissan Technical
90.78 -> Center Europe so e-force Works differently from a standard overdrive system by having
96.68 -> two Motors one on the front axle one on the rear axle so we have a much better control
100.299 -> over where we place the torque front and rear and then in combination with the brake system
104.92 -> and Chassis Control Systems we're able to move the torque left and right with the brakes
109.35 -> and front and rear with the chassis control so that we gain more control over uh understeer
116.149 -> more control over pitching and generally hopefully improve the dynamic performance of the car
121.619 -> over a conventional water system more about the e-force powertrain when we hit the road
126.77 -> meanwhile let's talk about the Practical aspects of the x-trail after all it's a family SUV
131.959 -> and we start with the boot the Techna version has hands-free access and the sensors are
138.38 -> on the corners not in the middle so it's uh almost like a Range Rover the boot capacity
146.459 -> is 485 liters in the 7-seat configuration and 575 liters in the 5-seater this is a five-seater
154.319 -> most of those 575 liters is above the floor the storage compartment under the floor is
160.349 -> very shallow perhaps you can store some small bits and Bobs in there but it's not for carrying
165.86 -> more luggage the floor is a two-piece job and half of it can serve as a partition so
171.24 -> the cargo doesn't move about it's a Pity that there are no additional hooks on this divider
176.209 -> like for example in a Volvo or a Range Rover due to the protruding cover of some hybrid
181.58 -> Drive component the cargo cover does not fit under the floor for what it's worth if you
186.96 -> run out of boot space in the standard configuration the second row of seats can slide and you
191.89 -> have adjustable backrest angle so you can pack a little more at the expensive leg room
196.66 -> for passengers traveling in the rear
201.599 -> before I sit in the back two comments look how wide the door opens that's a plus also
208.22 -> doors cover the Sills and that's also a plus but on a rainy day sand and mod will accumulate
214.89 -> on the seals so careful about that Headroom and legroom are generous I'm 175 centimeters
221.83 -> tall as I mentioned earlier the rear seat slides forward increasing the boot capacity
227.659 -> at the expense of legroom the rear seat slides very far to the front allowing for easier
235.299 -> access to the third row in the 7-seat version this car comes with three Zone automatic climate
241.269 -> control there are also heated seats the x-trail has plenty of standard equipment there are
247.8 -> usba and USBC ports in the back the door pockets are large as are the cup holders in the armrest
254.209 -> the rear seat splits 4060 and the armrest also doubles as a ski hatch [Music] let's
266.8 -> move on to the cockpit in case you didn't notice it in the back it's clear in the front
272.15 -> that this is not only a new car but also that the interior quality is excellent well I remember
277.53 -> the previous x-trail it had the very hard rough Plastics the fourth generation everything
283.75 -> is Pleasant to touch soft very elegant piano black is limited only to a few surfaces few
290.94 -> details and there are physical controls that make me feel comfortable more comfortable
295.99 -> than touch screens seat Heating click steering wheel heating click windscreen heating click
303.85 -> set the temperature for the rear seats click now a word of advice to other car makers who
309.52 -> want to push subscription for features a customer buying a car in a certain class expects certain
316.66 -> features and forcing them to pay extra for them at the configuration stage or as part
321.821 -> of a layer subscription may look good at first and quarterly reports but not when the customer
328.13 -> leaves the showroom on foot the door pockets are big the dials are easy to read buttons
334.27 -> on the steering wheel are physical the cup holders are clearly for American sized drinks
338.55 -> which in Europe you'll find in DIY stores in the bucket aisle the storage compartment
343.99 -> under the armrest is generous the glove box is average size although there is a wireless
350.12 -> charger Android auto is wired I'll take the cable for physical buttons the driving position
356.56 -> is comfortable in the top trim version the drivers and passenger seats are electrically
361.22 -> adjustable with memory settings there is also Lumber support adjustment both Anna and I
366.66 -> easily find a comfortable position I'm 175 centimeters tall Anna is 160 centimeters on
374.48 -> the console in addition to the drive selector because the x-trail doesn't have a transmission
379.41 -> there's a drive mode switch which includes snow and off-road modes this means I should
385.08 -> probably do a bit more than my usual diagonal approach test [Music]
403.31 -> Nissan sent me all the way to Andorra to experience the performance of the e-force powertrain
409.4 -> on an ice track what are its advantages well here's Nissan's James crisp to explain the
417.65 -> benefit e-power provides is it gives you gives customers EV Driving Experience by not having
422.71 -> a mechanical connection from the internal combustion engine to the wheels so this gives
428 -> us more smooth acceleration more control over acceleration and braking it also gives us
434.21 -> benefit because we have more control over the internal combustion engine speed so we
439.52 -> can tune the car and make the car more quiet for customers so they're more comfortable
443.93 -> when they're driving a conventional hybrid and indeed on slippery surface the x-trail
449.36 -> inspires confidence just remember there are no Miracles all-wheel drive systems no matter
455.68 -> how advanced won't help you when all the wheels lose traction so I decided to try out the
463.729 -> x-trail in more demanding conditions than my usual diagonal approach test now the ground
468.83 -> clearance on the x-trail is between 19 and 21 centimeters depending on the engine variant
473.849 -> this here is the version with the lowest 19 centimeters ground clearance I recently drove
480.909 -> a Land Rover Defender here with its trick off-road mode it almost drove itself up the
485.919 -> hill in the x-trail you have to maintain more momentum but the e-force drivetrain really
492.21 -> distributes torque effectively not only between the axles but also between individual Wheels
497.52 -> in order to get all the shots we drove up and down several times so this was no fluke
502.71 -> and finally here's my diagonal approach test I stop halfway so the two wheels on the opposite
507.15 -> Corners have limited traction and then I try to get going again the first attempt is in
512.709 -> normal mode this is pedal to the metal while the system is trying to figure out what on
517.769 -> Earth is going on foreign [Music]
527.36 -> the second attempt is in snow mode in this case even moderate acceleration yields results
532.24 -> sooner the car gets going with relative ease
535.18 -> [Music]
545.79 -> the third attempt is in off-road mode from the outside it looks similar to the snow mode
551.28 -> but from behind the wheel it feels even more effortless the system distributes torque between
556.51 -> Wheels with traction with even greater efficiency and now let's talk performance on hard surface
562.61 -> Nissan promises 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 7 seconds I got 7.2 seconds it was -2 degrees
569.31 -> Celsius but the road was dry there is a problem with low temperatures in general more about
576.49 -> that in a moment first I asked Nissan's James crisp to explain the advantages of the e-power
583.8 -> that's front-wheel drive and e-power e-force which is like E power squared all-wheel drive
589.36 -> uh so in terms of the customer scenes I think when you're driving around City there's there's
596.45 -> more benefit um as we're using electric motors to power the car it has the same efficiency
602.5 -> benefit in low speeder or mid-speed conditions then in Highway we see some drop-off in efficiency
608.209 -> but we're still very competitive in this scene as well because we don't have a gearbox that
612.67 -> allows us to to change the ratio unlike conventional ICU let's say that with a warmed up engine
619.18 -> it is possible to achieve well maybe not the claimed six and a half liters per 100 kilometers
624.12 -> in the urban cycle but seven eight is realistic and around 9 liters per 100 kilometers when
631.47 -> driving on the highway however we're talking about the situations in which the car covers
636.25 -> longer distances at a time so not five six kilometers but maybe 15 20 and more the problem
643.769 -> is that at low temperature even if it's still above freezing the internal combustion engine
649.72 -> needs to warm up so first it warms up soon after starting the car and several times more
655.389 -> for example to recharge and perhaps reheat the cold traction battery as a result I was
662.31 -> getting around 10 liters per 100 kilometers in the city only when the engine and Battery
668.06 -> have warmed up there is a chance to improve this result it's probably better on warmer
672.339 -> days but on colder days like during my test drive the fuel consumption results were not
679.16 -> optimistic on the plus side in City Driving the e-force does indeed provide Dynamics I
685.06 -> associate with electric powered cars I can't say the same about the e-power drive in the
691.089 -> Nissan Qashqai though there is also the e-pedal mode or one pedal driving like on other Nissan's
698.75 -> electric models when this mode is activated most braking is done by energy recuperation
705.25 -> just letting off the accelerator begins deceleration this means you rarely have to use the brake
713.279 -> pedals however the e-pedal feature has to be activated by the driver every time you
720.55 -> restart the car on the other hand Nissan remembers the status of the order hold function so you
727.329 -> don't have to activate it every time as it is the case with most Asian cars another positive
736.019 -> of the x-trail is its Dynamic handling even on winding roads that's something I didn't
741.209 -> expect so it is actually possible to stay awake behind the wheel of Nissan's family
747.839 -> SUV on the road I also appreciate decent soundproofing visibility is not bad and the 360 camera helps
757.949 -> maneuvering on the downside the lane keeping assist not only vibrates but also beeps and
764.65 -> it beeps too loud and too early I haven't found a way just to set it to vibrate the
769.37 -> steering wheel the Collision warning system can break unexpectedly because it thinks I'm
774.07 -> not reacting to the vehicle breaking in front of me and on top of that when I'm reversing
779.29 -> into my not so tight gate the car sometimes breaks violently because it thinks I'm too
784.54 -> close to the fence
785.579 -> [Music]
792.199 -> [Music] prices of the new Nissan x-trail start at 35 500 euro for the vizia trim with a 1.5
805.52 -> liter petrol engine and 163 horsepower mild hybrid CVT front wheel drive it costs 1500
813.38 -> Euro to get into the 204 horsepower e-power front-wheel drive the 213 e-force starts at
821.209 -> 44 400 Euro the third row of seats is an 800 Euro option regardless of the trim this test
828.459 -> car which is the e-force Tecna 5-seater with options cost 55 930 Euro
834.009 -> the Nissan x-trail surprised me with its generous equipment excellent interior finish Dynamic
843.17 -> handling and above average off-road capabilities the downsides are high fuel consumption and
849.18 -> obtrusive Drive raids to me the pros outweigh the cons take this one for a test drive and
855.9 -> how do you like the new Nissan x-trail let me know in the comment section below if you
862.829 -> like my sarcastic down to earth and possibly mildly amusing car reviews join me every Friday
869.12 -> at 3 pm Central European Time and don't forget to subscribe and like this video as it helps
