-> - Welcome to "Target Takes On."
.47 -> Today I'm taking on your must-have tools as a beginner cook,
.32 -> and I'm gonna show you how to use them.
.94 -> My name is Ahmad Alzahabi, aka The Golden Balance.
.31 -> Although I've had a lot of kitchen experience,
.93 -> I know it can be super intimidating for beginners.
.15 -> Sometimes just knowing where to start is super important.
.4 -> Today I'll be showing you how to clean
.81 -> and prep your cutting board, how to select your knife,
-> how to use a salad spinner, measuring spoons,
.25 -> food storage bottles, a mesh strainer, non-stick pans,
.16 -> and finally, a meat tenderizer.
.14 -> Cleaning your cutting board is super simple.
.12 -> Give it a quick and light scrub down,
.13 -> and then without drenching your cutting board in water,
.26 -> just give it a wipe down with a nice kitchen cloth.
.45 -> To protect your cutting board
.47 -> and make sure all the wood is nice and moisturized,
.51 -> you want to grab an oil,
.56 -> in this case I'm using some coconut.
.21 -> Grab a very small amount
.65 -> and just start rubbing it into your board.
.45 -> Let it sit out for a couple hours
.95 -> and the oil is gonna get absorbed into the wood.
.05 -> Now, you don't have to do this every single time,
.15 -> but I like to do it at least once a week.
.46 -> In my opinion, the cutting board and knife
.87 -> are the most essential kitchen gadgets
.49 -> for beginners to learn.
.51 -> How do I know which knife to select?
.19 -> The first knife you want to get is a chef knife
.2 -> between six to nine inches, depending on your preference
.14 -> look for a very comfortable handle
.97 -> and you typically want the handle
.35 -> and blade to be the same weight.
.73 -> I beg you, do not put your knife in the dishwasher.
.67 -> Now Golden Balance, how do I actually hold my blade?
.1 -> You want to pinch each side of the blade,
.69 -> and then you wanna wrap your other three fingers
.34 -> around the handle.
.173 -> And then your other hand, you want to use your knuckles.
.31 -> Allow your other hand to guide the knife.
.47 -> This is why I can cut without looking.
.18 -> Now, this is one of my favorite kitchen gadgets,
.07 -> the salad spinner.
.098 -> Whoowee.
.17 -> We're gonna add our lettuce into the basket.
.18 -> Rinse down your lettuce with some cold water.
.28 -> Remove the basket and just dump out your dirty water.
.04 -> Re-add the basket into the container,
.93 -> shut it up with the lid,
.01 -> and then with the click of a button,
.24 -> your lettuce will spin and dry out,
.92 -> and all you need to do is press this button and it'll stop.
.23 -> And then within two seconds, you have clean, dry lettuce.
.26 -> This will result in a longer lasting, crispy product.
.81 -> Now, as a beginner, to accurately use
.64 -> the proper amount of ingredients,
.35 -> I highly recommend investing in some measuring spoons.
.02 -> Then the better you get, the less you need these.
.36 -> Our next product is a food storage bottle.
.64 -> This is one of the most satisfying products
.56 -> to use in your kitchen.
.64 -> And then now you have any sauce or oil
.08 -> that you can just drizzle like this.
.52 -> Our next showcased item is a mesh strainer.
.83 -> These are super handy when you are
.09 -> straining out pasta in your sink,
.71 -> and plus this one is metal
.88 -> so it handles the high temperature.
.5 -> Or if you wanna rinse off any vegetables,
.97 -> put your products inside the mesh strainer
.53 -> and wash 'em over the sink,
.64 -> and now you have a water-free product.
.44 -> The next kitchen essential
.49 -> that you want to have is some non-stick pans.
.5 -> Make sure you're washing them with regular dish soap,
.57 -> but keep in mind, these are usually dishwashers safe.
.09 -> Two major tips that I want you to keep in mind.
.16 -> Do not let these overheat on your stove top,
.11 -> and the number one tip is do not use metal utensils on them
.99 -> or you will ruin them.
.34 -> The last tool is a little bit more low key,
.41 -> and it is a meat tenderizer.
.97 -> The flat surface actually flattens out the protein
.34 -> that you're using, and the textured side
.69 -> is actually to tenderize the meat.
.58 -> And we're just gonna hit our piece of chicken
.2 -> until it's nice and even on all sides.
.57 -> This will result in a more even cook.
.91 -> And this is dishwasher safe after it's touched your chicken
.88 -> don't let yourself be intimidated by the kitchen.
.01 -> Hopefully by learning how to clean
.48 -> and prep your cutting board,
.71 -> how to select, maintain,
.79 -> and properly hold your chef knife,
.41 -> along with other quick tips,
.79 -> you'll have more confidence going forward
.83 -> and you'll be calling yourself chef in no time.
.93 -> Thank you for watching, and make sure
.22 -> to check out Target's YouTube channel
.69 -> for more great how-tos.
.28 -> And as always, now Bismillah.
