9.7 -> In this video we're going to be looking at
the controls in an automatic car.
14.84 -> Jump in Cade.
23.029 -> Okay Cade, welcome to your first lesson.
Before we get under way, I want to just run
27.29 -> through the controls of this automatic car,
okay.
30.27 -> (Sure)
30.759 -> Okay, so the pedals.
The pedals control the motion of the car.
35.89 -> So down here on the floor you'll see we've
got two pedals.
39.23 -> On the right you've got an accelerator,
that controls the speed of the car.
43.9 -> The one on the left is your brake,
okay and that of course slows down or stops
48.75 -> the car.
Your foot will be positioned in front of the
52.579 -> brake pedal -
your right foot, with the ball of your foot
56.53 -> resting on the pedal and your heel towards
the ground.
60.38 -> Then to go to the accelerator,
you simply pivot your foot across at a 45
64.11 -> degree angle and touch down on the accelerator.
68.31 -> And what do I do with my left foot while I
am doing that?
70.439 -> Your left foot, during all this will do nothing.
It can just be kept out of the way.
74.92 -> Just put it to the side there like that?
76.469 -> Just like that.
Now the accelerator does go all the way to
79.229 -> the floor but we don't necessarily want it
to
82.299 -> because that will make us go very fast.
84.399 -> (Okay)
85.009 -> Your brake won't go all the way to the floor.
You'll feel it stiffen as you apply more pressure
90.969 -> and the brakes will come on harder.
92.99 -> So, the accelerator can go all the way to
the floor but doesn't necessarily need to?
97.67 -> That's right.
98.529 -> The brake will get tighter the more pressure
I apply
102.189 -> and my left foot just stays to the side out
of the way?
105.869 -> That's it, perfect.
106.569 -> (Sure.)
107.18 -> Next, the gear shift,
which you move with your left hand.
111.689 -> And you can see written down the side of the
console a bunch of letters and numbers.
115.869 -> Okay, so we'll just talk you through those.
At the top we have P, that stands for park.
121.649 -> (Okay)
122.119 -> When that's selected,
the wheels are locked and the car shouldn't
125.029 -> be able to go anywhere.
126.179 -> (Right)
126.49 -> If it's in park,
it's a good idea to use it in conjunction
129.649 -> with the handbrake.
130.8 -> (Okay)
131.42 -> Just in case one fails, the other's there
just to make sure your car doesn't go anywhere.
135.37 -> Sure thing - and should I use the park and
handbrake even when I'm on the flat?
138.689 -> Absolutely, yeah, it doesn't take much of
a gradient to start the car rolling.
144.34 -> Also a strong gust of wind will set it off.
147.489 -> (Okay)
147.92 -> The next is R and that's for reverse.
Naturally enough we select that when we want
153.34 -> to go backwards.
154.129 -> (Okay)
154.62 -> The next one down is N, that stands for neutral.
When the car is in neutral it can freewheel,
161.59 -> so it can go either forwards or back.
163.7 -> (Sure)
164.51 -> Down from that we have D which stands for
drive
167.099 -> and that will operate all of your forward
gears.
170.59 -> Low, second and third.
That's the one that you use most often and
175.269 -> the car will automatically change up and down
between those gears.
178.84 -> (Sure)
179.439 -> Down from that we've got second and L,
so these are your low gears.
185.51 -> Those are selected when you need a bit more
control.
188.26 -> You might be going up or down a steep gradient
or towing something heavy,
193.87 -> or something like if the car's a bit cold
and you need to get up a steep driveway
197.4 -> put it in low and just use that until it warms
up.
200.67 -> (Okay)
200.89 -> It just stops the car from selecting the next
gear up.
204.2 -> (Sure)
204.54 -> Okay, so it just makes life a little easier
on the transmission.
208.66 -> Also you'll notice there's a wee button on
the gear lever.
211.89 -> (Oh yes.)
212.569 -> Now that needs to be depressed in order to
take it out of park, okay?
216.939 -> and in most cars you'll also need to put your
foot on the foot brake.
220.969 -> So, I put my foot on the foot brake, push
the button and go from park to reverse;
228.81 -> reverse to neutral;
neutral to drive
232.749 -> which are all my forward gears.
234.249 -> That's right.
235.109 -> Drive to second;
and second to L,
239.15 -> which are my two low gears.
240.65 -> Great,
now moving between low, second and drive,
244.769 -> you shouldn't have to touch the button, okay
and that's a bit of a safety switch.
248.969 -> If you press the button in you could easily
run right through neutral and into reverse
253.189 -> and that won't do the gear box any favours,
okay?
256.14 -> (Okay.)
257.28 -> (Music)
