Step 1: Purchase a neti pot Purchase a neti pot. They are available online or at health food stores and are usually ceramic, plastic, or metal.
Step 2: Prepare a saline solution Prepare a saline solution by filling the neti pot with one cup of lukewarm water, and then adding the salt to the pot.
Tip Extremely hot or cold water and iodized salt can cause irritation and discomfort.
Step 3: Insert spout into nostril Lean over the sink or a bowl, and turn your head to the left 90 degrees, so your right ear is parallel to the floor. Insert the neti pot’s spout into your left nostril, so that it forms a seal.
Step 4: Pour solution through nasal passage Breathing through your open mouth only, pour the solution into your left nostril and let it flow out through the right nostril into the sink or bowl.
Step 5: Exhale through both nostrils Once the neti pot is empty, exhale firmly through both nostrils to clear all water from your nasal passage.
Tip If you blow into a tissue, don’t pinch your nostrils closed.
Step 6: Refill and repeat Refill the neti pot and repeat the procedure with the other nostril.
