Nissan Ariya vs Volkswagen ID.5

Nissan Ariya vs Volkswagen ID.5

The Nissan Ariya and Volkswagen ID.5 are two of the freshest electric SUVs to hit the UK market, as well as being extremely closely matched in terms of size, price and range.

In this CarGurus UK review, electric car expert Vicky Parrott test the 2022 Nissan Ariya against the equally as fresh VW ID.5. She considers both models for styling, practicality, technology, driving dynamics, charging and more.

The Ariya, which is available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, features a 63kWh or 87kWh useable battery capacity, giving an official range on the WLTP cycle of 250 or 329 miles respectively. It costs from around £44,000 up to £66,000.

The VW ID.5 fights back with a 77kWh battery and an official WLTP range of up to 327 miles. Prices start from about £50,000, making it an ideal match for the cheapest long-range model of the Ariya.

.06 -> the mid-sized electric SUV class is
.82 -> brimming with options ranging from the
.86 -> Tesla Model y to the skoda enyak IV and
.44 -> far more but the Nissan Aria and
.96 -> Volkswagen id5 are two of the latest
.24 -> offerings and they both bring something
.219 -> new to the party I'm going to start by
.5 -> talking about the Nissan Aria this is
.32 -> the first pure electric model that
.699 -> Nissan has launched since the leaf now
.039 -> it's also on a new platform it's called
.66 -> the cmf EV platform it's offered with
.3 -> two different batteries you can have a
.92 -> 63 or an 87 kilowatt hour usable
.5 -> capacity and that gives you an official
.66 -> wltp range of between 250 and 329 miles
.16 -> that does also take into account the
.32 -> fact that you can get the Nissan with
.64 -> front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive
.26 -> and a bit more power and price wise
.36 -> you're looking at 44 000 right up to
.399 -> about 56 000 pounds for those high-end
.039 -> four-wheel drive versions this here is
.26 -> the VW id5 it is essentially a swoopier
.92 -> fancier version of the Volkswagen id4
.14 -> which means that you get the familiar
.699 -> Meb platform and at the moment it's only
.34 -> available with a 77 kilowatt hour
.26 -> battery that gets you an official wltp
.84 -> range of up to 327 miles prices start at
.26 -> around about 50 000 pounds which is by
.72 -> the way almost exactly the same price as
.52 -> you'll pay for the cheapest long range
.26 -> Aria these two are really similar in
.74 -> terms of size price and ambition then
.2 -> but if I have to make a decision between
.18 -> the two when it comes to the styling
.04 -> well I'm definitely going to have to go
.02 -> for the Nissan it's got really fabulous
.24 -> concept car looks really kind of sharp
.159 -> creases I do really like this sort of
.78 -> copper colored launch color they've got
.159 -> two I just think they've done a fabulous
.84 -> job it's really eye-catching despite
.52 -> this being quite a generic looking class
.96 -> of car I think the Volkswagen on the
.72 -> other hand well I think it looks really
.759 -> good I like the proportions of it but it
.56 -> doesn't look very sporty and athletic
.299 -> does it it's got a really sort of Stumpy
.74 -> front end and something about it it just
.54 -> kind of makes me want to kind of grab
.68 -> its cheeks and squish them it's kind of
.06 -> cute and whether that's what you want
.799 -> from a family SUV or not well it may be
.86 -> maybe it's not anyway to most people
.799 -> practicality will be the more important
.84 -> issue the Nissan has a somewhat middling
.68 -> 466 liters of boot space which for some
.72 -> context is what you get in the Nissan
.22 -> Qashqai you also get some cable storage
.98 -> under the boot floor as well as a
.599 -> powered tailgate on both trims but
.4 -> neither of these cars have any storage
.02 -> in the nose the Volkswagen gets a much
.599 -> more useful 549 liters of boot space and
.78 -> it does have a slightly deeper boot as
.459 -> well which is useful if you've got a
.72 -> chunky buggy to fit in there's also a
.94 -> variable floor to hide your cables away
.56 -> but only higher spec cars get a powered
.14 -> boot lid
.22 -> both cars have 60 40 split rear seats
.62 -> that lie flush with the boot floor when
-> folded and the Volkswagen also comes
.22 -> with a through loading cubby
.84 -> passenger space in the back of the id5
.879 -> is very generous particularly in terms
.739 -> of the leg room and it's just you get
.9 -> really nice Comforts like this huge
.76 -> glass roof definitely going to keep the
.5 -> kids happy as is the standard rear
.42 -> climate control and you get a nice
.28 -> Center armrest with cup holders here so
.4 -> maybe Headroom could be a touch better
.62 -> but even so I think you get two six
.3 -> Footers back here no problem at all
.86 -> passenger space in the Nissan there is
.44 -> masses of leg room Headroom though is a
.5 -> little bit tight you do feel like this
.94 -> sunroof which is optional on the base
.62 -> trim well that does kind of eat into
.239 -> your Headroom a little bit I still think
.62 -> kind of your average adult's got to be
.12 -> really comfy back here but it does feel
.8 -> a tiny bit dark and I think some people
.3 -> might expect a little a little bit
.86 -> better on that front even so the seats
.14 -> are nice and comfy nice sort of deep
.7 -> bases here and you do get your Center
.4 -> armrest plus charging points in the back
.62 -> more importantly than anything practical
.42 -> like how comfortable it is back here is
.22 -> that you get this lovely shag pile
.56 -> carpet as standard in the Aria which I
.14 -> have to say it's uh well I mean it's
.239 -> really impress aggressively luxurious
.86 -> but then if you've got kids you're going
.659 -> to take it out immediately because
.739 -> otherwise it's going to be full of Crips
.06 -> and mud in about three minutes
.7 -> the finish and look of the interior in
.22 -> the Nissan I think as well as the way it
.44 -> looks on the outside is one of the big
.819 -> reasons people are going to go for this
.019 -> car it looks really cool in here there's
.239 -> a real Boutique feel to it there's
.099 -> something almost a bit kind of volvo-ish
.019 -> about it with this kind of wood finish
.879 -> that they've got around here touch
.62 -> sensitive buttons that are sort of on
.72 -> the wood effect finish it's really feels
-> quite special and definitely a big step
.739 -> up for Nissan so they've done well on
.299 -> that front I like the driving position
.04 -> too you do get Standard Lumber
.78 -> adjustment and electric seat adjustment
.579 -> in the Aria you sit quite high up
.979 -> actually but the seats really kind of
.72 -> hold you nice and firmly and it does
.699 -> actually give you lots of support so I
.02 -> do quite like that the Nissan gets two
.3 -> 12.3 inch screens with the central
.58 -> touchscreen being the window to all of
.56 -> your infotainment needs standard
.9 -> equipment includes Sat Nav with charger
.639 -> search function as well as Wireless
.5 -> Apple carplay and Android auto
.38 -> equipment in the rd5 is really generous
.139 -> you get this fake leather and suede
.199 -> finish which actually I really quite
.94 -> like you get 30 weight ambient lighting
.34 -> heated seats you get really kind of
.38 -> everything that you expect however I do
.6 -> think that it would benefit from having
.52 -> Lumber adjustment I don't even really
.139 -> mind the fact that you get manual seat
.4 -> adjustment on this entry-level live trim
.68 -> that we have here but definitely a
.6 -> lumber adjustment would benefit because
.1 -> this seat feels quite flat otherwise the
.32 -> VW is 12.3 inch touchscreen gets really
.08 -> decent graphics and is very easy to see
-> even in direct light
.74 -> plus you get Sat Nav Wireless Apple
.9 -> carplay and Android auto as well as
.06 -> over-the-air software updates
.16 -> is blighted by those annoying touch
.32 -> sensitive temperature controls for the
.94 -> climate but generally I think the
.74 -> materials in here feel pretty decent I
.84 -> just don't think it has the wow factor
.28 -> that the Nissan has when it comes to
.259 -> charging both cars get the same type 2
.479 -> and CCS sockets which are compatible
.82 -> with every home charger and the vast
.979 -> majority of public charges across the UK
.84 -> and Western Europe a full charge at home
.3 -> will take under 13 hours in the big
.979 -> battery Volkswagen and Aria while the
.199 -> smaller battery Nissan will take more
.699 -> like nine hours both get Peak rapid
.74 -> charging speeds of 130 kilowatts so if
.5 -> you plug into a 150 kilowatt DC rapid
.9 -> charger you'll get a 100 Mil top up in
.18 -> roughly 15 minutes or a 10 to 80 battery
.82 -> charge in around 30 minutes
.88 -> so this is actually the smaller battery
.22 -> of the two available in the Aria so this
.8 -> is a 63 kilowatt hour but you still get
.02 -> 215 brake horsepower motor on the front
.78 -> wheels it's rear wheel drive in the id5
-> front wheel drive in the Aria and that
.639 -> gives this a seven and a half second
.38 -> note 62 time and it does actually feel
.02 -> pretty Punchy I have to say it's got a
.419 -> proper sort of spring in its step when
.74 -> you want it to the Aria so the
.78 -> performance is pretty decent I mean
.819 -> having said that that's pretty middling
.28 -> by the standards of this class you know
.38 -> the Mustang Maki never minded the Tesla
.419 -> Model y absolutely scorching by
.819 -> comparison the handling is also
.46 -> fairly middling it turns into a corner
.68 -> fine the steering is quite light it's
.96 -> just one of those cars that feels quite
.28 -> heavy it doesn't really disguise its
.199 -> weight too well in terms of its handling
.419 -> and its performance the Nissan is
.4 -> competitive with the vast majority of
.08 -> its Rivals including the skoda enyak
-> that we favor but it's also nothing
.86 -> particularly special
.6 -> to be honest it's a bit disappointing
.22 -> now this car is on 19-inch Wheels it's
.86 -> on huge balloon tires on 55 section
.44 -> Bridgestone tires and the ride
.16 -> a lot of the time it's fine but if you
.44 -> get kind of quite a choppy urban road
.24 -> particularly it really does feel quite
.28 -> unsettled and when you do hit you know
.259 -> the potholes that you typically find a
.639 -> lot in the UK this kind of thing or the
.02 -> manhole covers get a really big thump
.819 -> and quite loud suspension too so I'd say
.46 -> that ride Comfort probably not quite as
.56 -> bad as a Tesla Model y but definitely
.96 -> not as good as in the Volkswagen id5 or
.139 -> for instance the Hyundai ionic 5. pros
.539 -> and cons of course but I do think that
.4 -> Nissan could have just tried a little
.02 -> bit harder to get the Dynamics a bit
.06 -> balanced a bit better either focus on
.099 -> the Comfort or on the sportiness because
.9 -> at the moment the Nissan seems to be
.58 -> kind of just about adequate on both
.44 -> fronts but not really particularly
.819 -> special either now Nissan sort of
.58 -> pioneered the one pedal driving mode
.38 -> which is where the brake regen and that
.72 -> don't forget is a system whereby when
.22 -> you lift off the throttle the car feels
.72 -> like it's breaking itself and what it's
.099 -> doing is harvesting energy to increase
.9 -> the efficiency in the range in the car
.58 -> in this hand you get something called
.56 -> e-pedal which is the same as that one
.539 -> pedal drive mode and it does when it
.12 -> kicks in you do have to get used to it
.919 -> if you've never used it before because
.18 -> it does feel quite peculiar but it
.58 -> doesn't take that much time and then you
.259 -> can find that you can drive around town
.759 -> with barely using the brake pedal at all
.5 -> very easy to get used to or you can turn
.719 -> e-pedal off and then you can toggle
.88 -> through the drive modes up here to
.32 -> change your steering weight and all that
.539 -> sort of thing
.68 -> you can put it into a slightly heavier
.479 -> mode here with this very fancy looking
.7 -> futuristic sort of gear shifter thing so
.92 -> that's a slightly a sort of happy medium
.32 -> in between your normal drive mode and
.54 -> one pedal drive mode the id5
.519 -> interestingly takes a completely
.959 -> different attack and barely has any
.279 -> brake regen at all in normal drive mode
.1 -> and then you can just slightly weight it
.62 -> up if you want to so it's a bit simpler
.24 -> in the Volkswagen both of them quite
.22 -> easy to get used to and if you've never
.899 -> driven an EV before this all sounds a
.18 -> bit intimidating and weird honestly just
.64 -> have a go because they're really really
.14 -> easy to drive and really easy to get
.76 -> used to so it's one of those things
.68 -> that's just a case of a bit of
-> familiarity really
.95 -> [Music]
.54 -> foreign
.86 -> If You're Expecting The id5 to be
.66 -> particularly sporty then I think you're
.64 -> going to be a bit disappointed so this
.86 -> car here that we've got it's the base
.54 -> spec life and it's the pro so it's not
.12 -> even the performance Pro which gets a
.1 -> more powerful 201 brake horsepower motor
.26 -> this standard car gets 172 brake
.019 -> horsepower and it's pretty sedate to say
.54 -> the least so you're talking about 10.4
.339 -> seconds to 62 miles an hour that doesn't
.5 -> bother me overly much because to be
.779 -> honest it's punchy enough in normal
.459 -> everyday use but there is no getting
.5 -> away from the fact that it is well it's
.6 -> slow of course there is the GTX version
.76 -> which is four-wheel drive and uh near
.1 -> enough 300 brake horsepower so I'm sure
.839 -> that that will have quite a lot more
.399 -> Vigor to it but we haven't driven it yet
.959 -> and uh on this evidence I'm going to say
.62 -> that the id5 is definitely a more
.36 -> Comfort oriented car and I think that's
.1 -> one of its strengths actually this is a
.38 -> particularly poor Road surface that I'm
.06 -> on right now but generally I've quite
.04 -> enjoyed my time in the id5 because it's
.779 -> just really chilled it it rides really
.76 -> nicely actually peculiarly slightly
.1 -> better even than the id4 I seem to
.899 -> remember this is on 20 inch wheels this
.6 -> test car very refined not much wind
.12 -> noise almost no motor wind at all you
.88 -> know the steering's fine it weights up
.5 -> all right there is no sport mode so I
.6 -> think even Volkswagen has decided that
.16 -> it's not really bother even pretending
.6 -> that this is sporty you go through the
.16 -> drive modes here and you've got your Eco
.22 -> your comfort and your individual where
.62 -> you can weight up the steering and there
.54 -> is actually a sport mode if you bother
-> to sort of find it deep down in there
.62 -> but it all gels nicely for being
.899 -> comfortable and relaxed but I'm a bit
.36 -> disappointed that it's just a bit
.44 -> middling in terms of its performance and
.12 -> in the way it handles you know it's just
.7 -> not the sports SUV that I think a lot of
.38 -> people might hope and expect it to be
.26 -> really taking these two apart just
.24 -> proves that they're both admirable
.76 -> likable for various different reasons
.68 -> than Nissan particularly for the way it
.42 -> looks and the way it feels inside but
.12 -> neither of them is class leading
.44 -> honestly the problem with these two
.56 -> are their rivals the Kia ev6 pretty much
.22 -> just as practical and better to drive
.66 -> the Hyundai ioniq 5 more tacky cooler to
.24 -> look at you've got the Tesla Model y
.1 -> you've got the skoda enyak IV which is
.62 -> still our favorite all-round family EV
.019 -> they really are just swamped by
-> competition these two and in that
.279 -> context well neither is class leading
.92 -> when it comes to real world range the VW
.26 -> proved a little more efficient in our
.12 -> tests and returned 3.3 miles per
.1 -> kilowatt hour in warmer conditions and
.839 -> varied driving which included a fair bit
.82 -> of Motorway stuff that adds up to a
.16 -> range of 254 miles from this 77 kilowatt
.04 -> hour battery while the Nissan managed
.2 -> more like 3.1 miles per kilowatt hour
.24 -> that's 195 miles per charge on this
.18 -> smaller battery version
.56 -> ultimately both of these cars are
.779 -> recommendable for their Tech and general
.339 -> sophistication but neither is a standout
.98 -> in this very competitive class for its
.38 -> comfort and efficiency we would have to
.12 -> choose the Volkswagen over the Nissan
.5 -> here but only by a small margin and the
.38 -> Nissan is no doubt your best bet if you
.42 -> do value the style and interior finish
.33 -> [Music]
