The King is dead, long live the King! The new Ford Ranger Wildtrak V6 is a mighty impressive dual-cab 4x4 ute 👉 Full Review: https://www.carsales.com.au/editorial…
If you still need proof of the fundamental shift in the role played by the humble dual-cab 4x4 ute in our automotive lives, then the all-new 2022 Ford Ranger Wildtrak V6 is it.
Spacious, powerful, refined and laden with safety and multimedia tech, Ford’s new Aussie-engineered global ute is the very antithesis of the traditional workday ute rattling through a hard and brutal existence.
Of course, the old Ranger was a vehicle good enough to still be our pick as best of the dual-cabs even as it was retired. The Wildtrak was its mainstream flagship then as well, so the new model has a lot to live up to.
But armed with a lusty new 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6 and with a heap of learnings from the previous generation poured into it by its Australian-based development team, the new Ford Ranger makes a compelling attempt to raise the bar.

0.56 -> It's been teased, it's been previewed,
and now the new Ford Ranger has finally
6.32 -> been launched. So nothing more for it, let's
get in the new V6 Flagship Wildtrack model,
13.12 -> and go for a proper drive
and see what it's all about.
33.44 -> The Wildtrack is at the head of an overhauled
lineup of five ranger dual-cab ute models
39.28 -> that boasts new styling tech and engineering.
Prices go up, of course. The cheapest dual-cab
45.92 -> four by four starts just under $50,000, and this
model tops things out over $70,000. And yes,
54.08 -> the crazy new twin turbo raptor performance ute
is more expensive again, but that's not launching
60.8 -> for a little while yet. You're looking at one of
the biggest stories when it comes to Ford's new
65.76 -> Ranger, the Lion V6 Turbo Diesel three-liter
engine that elevates Ford's top selling ute
73.04 -> into the performance elite of the category. It
mates with a 10-speed auto and a new BorgWarner
79.6 -> permanent four by four system that includes low
range. The fundamental shape of the new ranger
86.08 -> is bluffer and more muscular than before. The
Wildtrack is distinguished by Unique Grill 18-inch
92.24 -> alloy wheels and sports bar and topped off by roof
rails and a power roller shutter for the load box.
99.52 -> The fundamental dimensions of the new ranger stay
much the same as before, but there's been a huge
105.36 -> uplift in tech. The digital instrument cluster is
new and so is this enormous 12-inch color touch
112.2 -> screen that's exclusive to the top spec Wildtrack.
A key improvement for the Ranger driver is the
118.4 -> steering wheel now adjusts for reach as well
as rate. Front seats are a new design as well.
124.96 -> The Wildtrack actually doesn't get the
top spec digital instrument cluster. So
129.84 -> still no proper techo and that's not good.
The touchscreen is huge, but importantly,
136.08 -> Ford's retained some hard buttons down the bottom
for vital functions like volume and temperature.
145.68 -> Ford's tried to create a bit more room in
the rear seat of the new Ranger by doing
149.36 -> things like scalloping out the doors, but the
fundamental space stays the same as before.
154.56 -> You do sit upright, typical of a ladder
frame ute, and it's not that spacious in
159.04 -> here. It feels a tiny bit less roomy than
before, but that may just be my impression.
163.76 -> You do get new features though, rear Air-Con
vents now a standard for rear seat passengers.
169.76 -> Ford makes a big deal about the increased
usability of the load box of the new Ranger.
174.88 -> Access steps help you get in and out, protective
box capping on the sides, but most importantly,
181.2 -> because the track is 50 millimeters wider, you
can now fit an Aussie pallet in the back here. Get
197.12 -> in the V6 range of Wildtrack, and the
expectation is the engine performance is gonna be
201.84 -> mind-blowing. Well, it's not quite that. I'd say
strong. It's obviously got plenty of torque and it
209.68 -> copes really well with the load, which is great
news, especially for towers and people who are
213.92 -> gonna use this to haul loads. But the weight of
the Ranger is such that it takes the edge off
221.84 -> the acceleration. It's still pretty impressive
though. The V6 is obviously a step up from the
228.4 -> four-cylinder. It's auto seems better matched
with less shift shock and it's also quieter,
233.52 -> smoother with less vibration, and it
sounds better. The Aussie-developed
238.32 -> Ranger has always been a good handler. By ute
standards, it's terrific on winding bitumen,
244.24 -> it's at its best on dirt roads, especially
when you throw corrugations into the mix.
249.2 -> And then when you get off-road, it's got the four
by four skillset to cope. Utes aren't renowned
255.6 -> for their ride qualities, but the old Ranger's at
the top of the class and the new one is also right
260.64 -> there. We found a bit of a load on board help calm
any stiffness and flightiness from the leaf spring
266.24 -> rear end. All up, the new Ranger Wildtrack V6
dual-cab is an impressive vehicle. It's a sellout
273.2 -> success right now and it's hard to imagine too
many owners being disappointed when they finally
278.08 -> get their hands on their new ute. The V6 engine
really does add a new performance dimension.
285.12 -> But of course, this is just a first taste launch
review. Car sales has a series of road tests in
291.68 -> the works with the Ranger lineup, and we're also
going to do comparison tests against the key
297.28 -> rivals including the Toyota Hilux. Will the Ranger
stand up to the scrutiny? Tune in to find out.
