Volkswagen Arteon Shooting Brake - AutoWeek Review - English subtitles
Volkswagen Arteon Shooting Brake - AutoWeek Review - English subtitles

17.563 -> When Volkswagen first released the Arteon, it was uncertain if it
were to succeed. It was all about the exterior, because underneath...
24.398 -> it was nothing more than a Volkswagen Passat. Earlier, with the Passat
CC and the regular CC that didn't really work out.
31.182 -> With the Arteon, it's clearly a different story. Volkswagen is holding on
and they're facelifting the Arteon. They've even introduced a new...
37.065 -> body shape. This is the new Arteon Shooting Brake.
49.401 -> You'd think the big advantage of the Arteon Shooting Brake lies in the
luggage space, compared to the regular Arteon.
55.392 -> Well, you're wrong. Sure, it can hold 565 litres in the boot, but that's only
two litres more than you can fit in the regular Arteon.
63.029 -> I do have to say, that's only the space beneath the parcel shelf.
That's where the space in the fastback stops, whilst you're able to stack...
67.783 -> a little higher in the Shooting Brake. Also, if you fold down the seats,
the difference becomes a tad bigger.
71.481 -> 75 litres to be precise, so it's not that big of an advantage. Instead,
the big advantage of the Shooting Brake is found on the rear seat.
81.588 -> If you sit down back here, you've still got that crazy amount of legroom,
like you have in the Fastback. However, in that Fastback...
87.196 -> the roofline slopes much earlier. That really compromises the headroom.
Even if you're 1.80 m. tall, like me, you've got to fold yourself a little.
94.491 -> But in here, when I put my bottom firmly in the seat, I've got lots
of space to work with. Even if you're taller than the average Dutchman,
100.349 -> you'll be alright. The legroom is still very good,
so we'll leave it at that.
105.356 -> If we move further forwards, it's like we've entered a Volkswagen New
Style and a Volkswagen Old Style-hybrid.
111.276 -> Just look at the gear lever. Clearly Volkswagen Old Style.
Not some weird Braun shaving apparatus as a gear lever, but...
117.854 -> a big, physical gear lever which you have to grab and move
into a different position.
122.637 -> There are big buttons around it, which makes it very easy to use.
Typically Volkswagen from back in the day. Very functional, but not...
127.798 -> very exciting. If we look at the new airconditioning cluster,
it's Volkswagen New Style all the way.
133.978 -> It looks very good, incredibly futuristic, but it has all kinds of
swiping features. Ergonomically, I don't think it's an improvement.
141.041 -> I do have to say that a lot of the functions are outside of the menu,
like in the Golf or the Seat Leon. There are all kinds of tip-buttons...
148.282 -> for different functions, which mean you don't have to search for stuff.
But I still wouldn't call it an ergonomic improvement.
153.225 -> If we look at the rest, it stands out that Volkswagen has used different
materials compared to the pre-facelift version.
157.482 -> Volkswagen themselves say it's more premium now. However, I think
it's a bit like the Peugeot 508. I really like the way it looks,
163.862 -> but if you would compare it with a Volvo V60... That doesn't have fake
aluminium. Or take the way Volkswagen has solved the head-up display.
171.107 -> Some small piece of plastic which rises up and on which information is
projected, that won't impress Mercedes-Benz, BMW or Volvo at all.
187.592 -> Enginewise, it's all about recognition with the Arteon Shooting Brake.
There will be a plug-in hybrid, like the one we know from the Passat GTE.
195.648 -> However, we won't see that before 2021. So for now, you can choose
between a 2.0-litre petrol engine or a 2.0-litre diesel engine.
201.146 -> The diesel produces 200 horsepower whilst the petrol engine produces
190 horsepower and 320 Nm of torque at 1.500 RPM.
209.151 -> It's connected to the double-clutch 7-speed DSG automatic as standard
and it's kind of the same song as always.
214.624 -> The gear changes are fast, smooth and it likes to get in the
highest gear possible as quickly as possible.
220.281 -> And then there's the 2.0-litre engine, which is pretty big according to
todays standards. Because of its size, it doesn't really need its turbo to...
226.509 -> produce the torque. So if you're around 1.000 or 1.500 RPM, it doesn't
really matter. It will pull away very neatly anyway.
234.106 -> When its at speed, the performance is more than decent.
The drivetrain is really good at speeding up with ease,
241.678 -> without you getting the impression that the engine has to work
very hard to do so. And that's very comfortable.
246.948 -> Then, the chassis. It's a lot less exciting than the way the car looks.
This particular Arteon Shooting Brake has the Business R Plus-trim,
254.318 -> which has R-logo's everywhere and a lot of trim,
so you'd think it's a very sporty car. Well, it isn't.
260.398 -> It's a bit like all big MQB-platform-cars. The distance between you
and the front wheels is much like a Golf. However, a Golf is...
268.535 -> a dynamic car and it ends right behind you. In here however,
there's still a lot of car behind you.
275.463 -> And that's something you'll notice. It has quite a long wheelbase,
it's quiet, it has a lot of grip, but it's just not agile.
283.811 -> You can throw it around corners, so it's not very sporty.
But is that a bad thing? Not at all, if you ask me.
292.377 -> Like I said, the car offers enough grip, it's quiet, the steering is very
linear, so nudging the steering wheel once should be enough.
306.094 -> It's a nice, mostly comfortable car which has a lot of potential, but you
won't buy this car for its amazing chassis.
330.262 -> And that brings us to the most important question. Why would you buy
this car? And I don't have a surprising answer really.
337.986 -> It's an excellent car, in the same way that a Volkswagen Passat is an
excellent car. And a Passat Variant with the same engine will be about...
346.079 -> €1.000 less expensive, but it's a lot more spacious. Sure, the interior
might half a percent less premium, but the differences are really small.
353.762 -> So why would you buy this Arteon? Well, with the Arteon you could say
it's easier to load because it's a fastback, whilst the Passat is a saloon.
361.993 -> For obvious reasons, you can't say that with this Shooting Brake.
The only real reason would be the exterior, if you like that.
371.719 -> In other words, you only buy this Arteon for its looks.
And we've heard that before.
