the history of humankind.

more complicated than this.

34.88 -> Although of course, it wasn't called English then.
38 -> There were a number of germanic tribes.

53.6 -> which at the time was inhabited
by Britons who spoke Celtic languages,
58.4 -> the ancestors of Welsh,
Scottish Gaelic, and Cornish
64.32 -> before the Anglo-Saxons arrived
66.56 -> the Romans had also colonised
large parts of the island
70.32 -> along with people from various
parts of the Roman Empire.
73.76 -> Later the Vikings came
75.76 -> and then the Normans.
77.36 -> All speaking their own languages
81.28 -> and also mixing their languages with English.
90.16 -> It wasn't until the 14th century that English
92.96 -> became properly established
as the language of England
96.24 -> and was used for the first time
in parliament and in the law.
100 -> The first king of England to speak
English as his native language
104.24 -> was Henry IV.
106.24 -> Henry came to the throne in 1399
109.28 -> almost a thousand years after
the Anglo-Saxons arrived
113.2 -> but once English was established,
115.6 -> it also began to spread or more
accurately it began to be spread.
122.16 -> The most important driver for this was colonialism
126.32 -> in lots of countries, English pushed
out the local language,
129.76 -> and indigenous forms of English developed
132.72 -> In other countries, English existed
alongside the local languages
137.04 -> and new forms developed.
139.2 -> In the 20th century, it continued to spread
142.72 -> through the entertainment industry,
politics, the media, and technology,
148.08 -> so that today it's a truly global language.
153.2 -> Throughout its history, it's always changing
171.36 -> and we'll continue to do so
