Lives Up To The HYPE! 2023 Nissan Z Review

The 2023 Nissan Z is back and everyone is wondering if it lives up to the hype? Let’s find out in my Nissan Z review! This marks the return of the legendary JDM sports cars but of course, many are talking about the Nissan Z vs Supra battle - and we’ll get into that.

The Nissan Z 2023 is powered by a 3.0L twin-turbo V6 making 400-hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. You have the choice of either a 9-speed automatic or a 6-speed manual. The new Nissan Z 0-60 time comes in the low 4 seconds. Now, many are referring to this as the Nissan 400Z but this year, the name carries just the ‘Z’ with no numbers. This is a true Nissan Fairlady Z.

The best thing about the new Z? It’s a sports car bargain. Prices start at just $39,990 for the base 2023 Nissan Z Sport. However, if you want a limited-slip differential you’ll have to jump up to the Nissan Z Performance which starts right under $50,000. In this video, I’ll give you a full tour of the interior, exterior and all the other details you need to make your buying decision. Let’s get into it!

.29 -> The Nissan Z.
.72 -> This is one car that has never really deviated
.01 -> from its original formula.
.45 -> Since day one, the goal of the Nissan Z
.06 -> was to be fun to drive.
.79 -> The only thing that's really changed is the name,
.24 -> originally called Fairlady in Japan
.38 -> because at the time, the president of Nissan
.7 -> saw my Fairlady on Broadway,
.29 -> and apparently he absolutely loved it.
.93 -> Here in the States, you always had numbers
.37 -> in front of the letters
.25 -> but now, you no longer have any numbers.
.16 -> It's just called Z.
.55 -> But yeah, for 53 years, the formula has always consisted
.82 -> of an affordable price tag, a rear wheel drive layout,
.88 -> a six cylinder under the hood and a manual transmission.
.52 -> Well, the one I'm driving has a nine speed automatic.
.1 -> So there's a slight change here.
.52 -> Do I wish it was a manual?
.93 -> Yes, but hey, that's what Nissan gave me
.19 -> and I greatly appreciate it.
.72 -> At least it'll be easier to do a launch control.
.28 -> So here we go.
.71 -> Left foot on the brake, gas all the way down,
.92 -> let it build, build, build.
.441 -> (car engine revs)
.484 -> Oh, my name is Omar and this is the 2023 Nissan Z.
.679 -> (upbeat music)
.6 -> So yeah, the Z no longer has numbers in the front
.46 -> like the legendary 240Z, the 280Z,
.25 -> the 350Z and the 370Z.
.28 -> Technically this should have been called the 300Z
.83 -> but Nissan's marketing team
.42 -> felt that it would be bad for optics going backwards.
.61 -> So they just called it Z and I'm not mad at it.
.11 -> It's like Justin Timberlake popped up in that meeting
.58 -> and was like drop the 300, just Z, it's cleaner.
.07 -> Now that said, let's get right to it.
.98 -> Under the hood
.813 -> you have a three liter twin turbo V6 making 400 horsepower
.95 -> and 350 lb-ft of torque.
.45 -> And man (car engine revs) is that engine brilliant.
.32 -> The last time the Z was updated was like in 2009.
.56 -> And I think that's the last time I drove one
.67 -> but it's still every bit of fun as I remember it.
.92 -> I did 0 to 60 in this one in about 4.2 seconds.
.69 -> And this thing will keep going until 155 miles an hour.
.06 -> So yet this is the same engine
.89 -> that we saw in the Q50 and Q60 red sport.
.72 -> So for the Z, this is an increase of 68 horsepower
.72 -> over the outgoing 370Z and you definitely feel it.
.67 -> Weight wise, this new one is slightly heavier
.11 -> but not by much.
.943 -> The 370Z topped out right under 3,500 pounds.
.79 -> The new Z pushes right over 3,500
.61 -> with the manual transmission
.15 -> and over 3,600 with an automatic.
.02 -> See, the one thing that I always loved about the Z
.36 -> was that it was an affordable sports car
.34 -> that you could drive every day without hurting your back.
.8 -> And that still holds true for the new Z.
.25 -> This thing is very quick, but still very comfortable.
.38 -> Yes, the interior is a little tight for taller individuals
.44 -> but it's not terribly small either.
.28 -> Now we'll talk more about how this drives in a few minutes
.94 -> because I know what most of you want to know.
.41 -> Is this better than the new Toyota Supra.
.04 -> And to be honest, I think that's an unfair question.
.61 -> This is supposed to be a battle of true,
.67 -> JDM, Japanese domestic sports cars
.95 -> and the new Supra, well.
.53 -> That isn't one.
.363 -> So technically that's like asking
.16 -> if the new Z is better than the BMW M2.
.73 -> And I'll still give you my answer on that,
.26 -> but first, let me give you a tour of the new Z.
.84 -> We'll take a look at the inside,
.93 -> we'll take a look at the outside
.38 -> and then I'll give you my opinion on whether or not
.29 -> if you should buy this or the Toyota M2.
.11 -> Make sure you hit like, make sure you hit subscribe.
.54 -> All right, let's go and do this.
.25 -> All right, before we get into everything else,
.99 -> let's kick it off by listening to that exhaust sound.
.349 -> (car engine revs)
.27 -> I definitely expected a little bit more from this exhaust.
.57 -> So I'm not that impressed.
.75 -> But let's dig into the interior of the new Z
.67 -> before we talk about that beautiful exterior design.
.11 -> Now, once you get in here,
.05 -> you'll notice that a lot of it is very familiar
.16 -> and resembles the outgoing Z quite a bit.
.33 -> Reason being, this is still based on the last gen Z.
.62 -> So everything in here still feels the same,
.38 -> but there have been some upgrades
.75 -> to make you feel more modern.
.88 -> Some things that you'll recognize
.02 -> are these door handles and the vents.
.62 -> They are exactly the same from the outgoing 370Z.
.33 -> The switches for the windows
.41 -> and the door locks are exactly the same.
.42 -> The gauges right up here are from the 370Z,
.13 -> as are the climate control dials right down here.
.65 -> These two buttons here are still there
.3 -> but now the left button is your start stop button
.4 -> and the right one lets you circle through your drive modes.
.79 -> The heated seat controls
.82 -> and the trunk release buttons are still over here.
.86 -> And then you still have one cup holder
.25 -> and you can slide back the center armrest
.11 -> to reveal the second one.
.21 -> So yeah, it's pretty much the same, same
.36 -> but still different.
.47 -> Now when it comes to modernizing this interior,
.87 -> that's where the tech comes into play.
.46 -> All Nissan Z trims
.71 -> come with this 12.3 inch digital instrument cluster
.55 -> as standard.
.383 -> It's very similar to the gauge cluster you've seen
.26 -> on the new Rogue and the new Pathfinder.
.37 -> You have three viewing modes, including normal,
.89 -> enhanced, which is one of my favorites.
.46 -> And again, we've already seen this on other Nissan models
.09 -> but the Z also gets this pretty sharp
.94 -> and minimal sport viewing mode
.35 -> that features shift lights at the top,
.9 -> and some other information that you'll need
.57 -> for when you're on the track.
.18 -> That's it, if you're gonna buy the Z,
.36 -> just keep it in the sport viewing mode.
.9 -> This is the best mode to view when you're driving.
.07 -> Moving over to the center screen.
.83 -> Now, if you go for the Nissan Z sport,
.65 -> you'll get an eight inch touchscreen display,
.27 -> but if you go for the performance trim,
.44 -> you'll get an upgraded nine inch touchscreen display
.62 -> with navigation as standard.
.47 -> Nonetheless, both the sport and the performance trims
.94 -> come with Apple CarPlay and Android auto as standards.
.83 -> So that's pretty cool.
.09 -> Other than that,
.923 -> this is pretty much Nissan's new infotainment system
.96 -> and it's pretty simple and straightforward to use,
.91 -> although I wish the performance
.27 -> was just a little bit better.
.53 -> And that's really about it.
.57 -> What you don't have in the new Z
.36 -> in a 2023 model year vehicle is a wireless charger
.03 -> which is a little disappointing to me.
.96 -> Now, one thing that I really appreciate about the interior
.17 -> of the new Z is that you still have a manual hand break.
-> Nissan really knows its customers.
.89 -> And I still like the fact
.82 -> that you have some extra storage right here
.44 -> behind the seats
.273 -> that can be a very useful area to throw in some items
.66 -> that you don't frequently use.
.41 -> Oh, and if you're wondering,
.67 -> this bright blue smurf interior color is called just blue.
.45 -> The new Z is available in three interior colors,
.71 -> including black, red and this blue.
.36 -> I'm officially naming this smurf blue.
.19 -> That's just me.
.03 -> All right, let's talk about the looks of the new Nissan Z.
.28 -> In my opinion, this thing looks really sharp
.18 -> and is a noteworthy upgrade
.61 -> to one of the most legendary sports cars that ever existed.
.68 -> Now, as you would expect, there is a lot here
.7 -> that's inspired by the past.
.97 -> Starting from the front,
.89 -> the headlamps of the new Z
.25 -> are inspired by the JDM market, 240ZG.
.79 -> You have two half circles
.07 -> that make up the daytimering lights
.6 -> and they take their inspiration directly from that model.
.3 -> The new Z still has a really long hood
.12 -> which has always been the case.
.35 -> But these lines on the hood that create a Y shape
.74 -> are also inspired by Zs of the past.
.6 -> Now also inspired by the 240Z
.7 -> is this large rectangle grill.
.48 -> Originally when the concept first came out,
.01 -> everybody was up in arms
.11 -> about how weird that rectangle grill looked.
.67 -> So Nissan added these gray rectangular slots in here
.54 -> to give it some more character.
.13 -> And you'll find that rectangle
.24 -> designed throughout the new Z.
.66 -> One of the places that you'll find that rectangular design
.16 -> is right here on the LED taillights
.71 -> which are actually inspired by the Z32, 300ZX.
.44 -> Honestly, these look really, really cool.
.21 -> And while I'm back here,
.08 -> let me show you how to pop the trunk.
.33 -> You see this Nissan logo?
.71 -> Well right underwear,
.65 -> it says Nissan is a button
.92 -> that you press to pop up with the trunk.
.57 -> Pretty cool.
.403 -> Also, when you look inside the trunk,
.61 -> you'll notice that the cargo area of the new Z
.62 -> is exactly the same as the cargo area of the previous gen Z,
.2 -> nothing different here at all.
.62 -> From the side,
.453 -> the new Z carries on the beautiful Z silhouette.
.39 -> And one of the inspiration that you'll see here
.16 -> taken from the past are the door handles
.19 -> which are inspired by the Z33 from 2003.
.69 -> And then you have the original Z batch
.29 -> from the 240Z located right here and on the back.
.66 -> But yeah, that said,
.58 -> the new Z is one awesome looking sports car.
.22 -> Do you like the design of the new Z or the new Supra?
.93 -> I personally like the new Z.
.32 -> Let me know which one you like in the comments below.
.47 -> Now, one of the best things about the new Z
.6 -> is that Nissan managed to keep the price tag
.6 -> right under $40,000.
.12 -> And yes, that's due to a lot of the previous Z
.52 -> being carried over, but in 2022,
.68 -> this price tag for a sports car like this
.13 -> is pretty impressive.
.33 -> Now, if you jump up to the Z performance from the Z sport,
.73 -> that price tag jumps up to right under $50,000
.297 -> and the Z Proto Spec starts right under $53,000.
.67 -> But the cool part is that you don't have to pay extra
.06 -> whether you go for the manual transmission or the automatic.
.6 -> If you go for the base Z sport,
.38 -> that comes with 18 inch wheels and 12 inch rotor breaks
.25 -> with fixed two piston calipers in the front
.47 -> and a single piston caliper in the back.
.4 -> Hop inside, and tech-wise,
.53 -> you still get the 12.3 inch digital gauge cluster display.
.63 -> However, the Z sport
.7 -> gets the smaller eight inch touchscreen display
.48 -> in the center
.313 -> but you still get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto S standard.
.12 -> And when it comes to the seat, you have manual clot seats
.54 -> for both the driver and the passenger.
.16 -> The Z performance that I'm testing here
.69 -> steps things up with 19 inch wheels
.46 -> and upgraded performance brakes
.9 -> with four pistons calipers in the front
.54 -> and two piston calipers in the back.
.55 -> The performance also gets a front chin spoiler
-> or nice rear spoiler and side sill spoilers.
.69 -> Inside, you get leather appointed seats
.32 -> for both the driver and the passenger.
.96 -> And they are powered this time
.2 -> with the driver getting four way power adjustable seats
.62 -> with lumbar and thigh support
.09 -> and the passenger getting four way power seats
.08 -> with no support at all.
.81 -> The center touchscreen gets upgraded to nine inches.
.24 -> And this time you get navigation at standard.
.44 -> The sound system gets upgraded
.8 -> to an eight speaker bow sound system.
.43 -> And I didn't mention this before
.5 -> but the Z performance will also give you
.35 -> a mechanical limited slip differential as well.
.71 -> As for the Proto Limited Launch edition,
.51 -> that just gets a bunch of exclusive yellow
.38 -> touches inside out and it looks pretty cool.
.58 -> And then safety and driver assists tech-wise,
.61 -> you get everything as standard on all Z trims
.98 -> including adaptive cruise control,
.96 -> lane keep assist, forward collision warning,
.48 -> emergency breaking with pedestrian detection,
.73 -> rear cross traffic alert,
.99 -> blind spot monitoring and more.
.63 -> Camera game wise though,
.84 -> you'd only have this low res rear view camera
.79 -> which is kind of disappointing.
.41 -> All right, before I give you my opinion
.69 -> on how the new Z drives,
.99 -> let me point at a few important daily ownership
.04 -> highlights that will have to show all of you,
.35 -> you have two cup holders.
.09 -> One is right there
.08 -> and one is hidden right there in the center armrest.
.98 -> Here are what the keys look like to the new Z.
.44 -> No Z logo, no remote start just a plain Nissan key.
.61 -> Door open and close sound from the outside
.794 -> (car door bangs)
.8 -> and from the inside.
.39 -> Sorry about the wind.
.34 -> It's really windy outside.
.484 -> (car door bangs)
.317 -> Charging game wise.
.15 -> You have a USB-C port and USB-A port
.47 -> and no wireless charger
.75 -> even though they probably could have fit it right there.
.32 -> And let's do an indicator
.5 -> in horn sound, test indicator first.
.57 -> Pretty simple.
.403 -> Now for the horn sound.
.789 -> (car hooting)
.92 -> That's solid.
.12 -> I like it, better than the Supra.
.12 -> So yeah, I kind of got carried
.39 -> away a little bit in the beginning, but can you blame me?
.5 -> I'm driving the new Z.
.78 -> Of course I had to talk
.81 -> about how it drives a little bit right off the bat
.91 -> but let's get into it a little bit more.
.89 -> This engine for the Z is really well calibrated.
.59 -> You have really, really sharp throttle response
.55 -> and that's really the main highlight for 2023.
.2 -> You have better airflow to the engine.
.99 -> And the other highlight for 2023
.09 -> is that you have a 23.9% increase to body rigidity
.14 -> which provides for a more balanced feel
.43 -> and you have better brakes,
.24 -> especially on the performance model.
.16 -> The steering feels more connected,
.12 -> definitely better than the Q50 and Q60 in red sport.
.13 -> You just feel very confident taking bends at high speeds.
.98 -> And then the stability that this thing has
.6 -> at every speed just makes it perfect.
.52 -> Whether you're going 65
.71 -> or you're going 100 miles an hour, it just feels so stable.
.12 -> It's honestly crazy that you have a car here
.13 -> that has 400 horsepower and drives like this
.5 -> at a $40,000 price tag.
.39 -> You really can't get upset that Nissan didn't do more here
.22 -> because the Z was already great.
.52 -> I honestly feel like that if it did anything else
.58 -> that would drastically change the price of this car
.15 -> and no longer make it the affordable sports car
.61 -> that we all love.
.66 -> Now, what about the transmission?
.9 -> Should you get an automatic or a manual?
.82 -> Well, if you know how to drive a manual transmission,
.11 -> then definitely get the manual.
.38 -> There's no question about that.
.72 -> If you go for the automatic, it doesn't entirely take away
.15 -> from the driving experience.
.4 -> Although I do wish that it shifted a little bit quicker.
.87 -> It shifts pretty quick when you downshift,
.29 -> but when you upshift, it takes a second.
.89 -> Would I have loved to seen a dual clutch transmission
.24 -> on the new Z?
.073 -> Of course, but that would make it cost more.
.52 -> But the other thing that this does that I don't like,
.591 -> (car engine revs)
.81 -> is that it denies you downshifts.
.04 -> That's why I would go for the manual over the automatic.
.46 -> Now ask for the Z versus the Supra battle, which is better?
.84 -> The new Supra is an outstanding sports car.
.3 -> I absolutely love it.
.54 -> It's just not a Toyota.
.26 -> Does the Supra feel a little bit more aggressive than the Z?
.09 -> Sure.
.923 -> But it has to.
.3 -> It's based on an M2.
.52 -> The new Z is all Nissan.
.36 -> Sure, it's based a lot on the previous generation
.06 -> updated with a powerful engine, better handling,
.6 -> better driving dynamics, fancier tech and all that,
.56 -> but it's still all Nissan doing their own work.
.05 -> Getting a new Nissan Z approved by the executives
.78 -> was a big battle inside Nissan.
.78 -> And having one with the manual transmission
.59 -> was probably an even bigger battle
.26 -> because this engine doesn't really play well
.33 -> with the manual transmission.
.55 -> So the engineering team really had their work cut out.
.32 -> And when a new Supra came out without a manual transmission,
.81 -> that made it even tougher for the enthusiast inside Nissan
.73 -> to make a case for a manual,
.46 -> but they stuck to their guns and got it done.
.74 -> So really we can thank the Nissan Z
.82 -> for the Supra finally getting a manual transmission.
.77 -> This is still a true JDM sports car.
.37 -> And in my opinion, they absolutely nailed it.
.84 -> This has everything that a Nissan Z should be.
.5 -> Styling, performance and sound,
.29 -> all of it's there, either way.
.85 -> Thanks for watching.
.23 -> Make sure you hit like, make sure you hit subscribe.
.72 -> Make sure you follow me on Instagram and on TikTok.
.5 -> My handle is @omardrives.
.56 -> I'll catch you guys in the next one.
.39 -> Take care.
.44 -> Peace.
.26 -> Come on GMC Canyon,
.27 -> And Chevy Malibu.
.01 -> switch lanes, get out of my way
.24 -> or I'll just go.
.762 -> (car engine revs) (gentle music)
.347 -> Oh, it sounds so good.
.53 -> I'm going 100, and it's so stable.
.64 -> I love this thing.
