Why the Nissan Hardbody is (Almost) Perfect... and how I fixed it
The 1993 Nissan Truck (aka Nissan Pickup, Nissan Hardbody, or Nissan D21) was a nearly perfect truck. It was simple, rugged, and well-built. (Like the Toyota pickup but a good deal cheaper now) This one is red, has only 34,000 miles; it’s only option is 4x4. That’s the perfect spec – Almost.
I wanted to make it perfect. Judge my success for yourself.

25.92 -> i'm not a truck guy but i love driving this truck
30.92 -> it's somehow tiny and huge at the same time
40.48 -> kind of like my nephew Sawyer. holy moly.
44.16 -> when i'm driving it it feels
like a toy – like a matchbox car
49.92 -> the first way you know it's not a toy is from the
name. toys are supposed to have cool names like
55.92 -> hot wheels. or super fast, lightning mcqueen.
nissan decided to name this truck the truck.
64.32 -> the nissan truck. people love their
nissan trucks. but buyers just started
71.04 -> calling it something else. they succeeded
where nissan's marketing team failed.
76.8 -> they decided to start calling this
truck the hard body and it stuck.
84.32 -> though it probably wouldn't for my nephew Sawyer.
88.64 -> the hard body didn't come with a lot
of features and this particular hard
92.4 -> body came with almost none. this truck has
more blank switches than actual switches.
98 -> even the tachometer was an optional extra half
the gauge cluster is just completely blank.
103.68 -> it's got the lines for the tachometer;
it's got the space for the tachometer,
108.16 -> but the needle and the numbers
those you had to pay extra for.
112.24 -> combine the manual transmission,
the lack of features, the noisiness,
119.92 -> and you achieve a sort of
flow state driving this truck
125.2 -> it's as close as i get to meditation
131.2 -> there's only one thing that interrupts
that driving experience and it's the
134.56 -> thing that makes this truck almost perfect
instead of perfect – the one luxury feature
139.76 -> i just can't live without – and
it's what i plan to fix today.
172.64 -> a cup holder
178.24 -> not having a cup holder particularly
181.28 -> when you're driving stick is just too frustrating
to deal with. i can handle no air conditioning.
188.96 -> i can handle manual windows, but having
to hold a cup. no, that simply won't do.
199.2 -> obviously i could just buy
a cup holder off of amazon,
204.4 -> but with a truck that has such
simple utility i'd rather make one
211.12 -> and not just from wood i get a lumber yard
223.44 -> i'd like to find the wood
245.44 -> so
323.6 -> time for more coffee
343.84 -> Did
368.08 -> that look super cool. I think. nice.
