2023 Nissan X-Trail: A 'Family Adventure Vehicle'

When is an SUV not an SUV? When it’s a ‘Family Adventure Vehicle’ of course. That’s the moniker that Nissan applies to the X-Trail instead of the normal one that every other manufacturer uses to signify a 4x4-shaped family car.

Nevertheless, the X-Trail has proved to be a very popular vehicle throughout the years, with around seven million of them sold worldwide. So, can the latest iteration continue that sort of success?
To find out, Vicky Parrott has a go in the E-Power version of the new car. This has a 1.5-litre petrol engine, but interestingly - not to mention, unconventionally - it never drives the wheels. Instead, it merely generates electricity to power the two electric motors - one on each axle to give four-wheel drive - which combine to deliver 201bhp, and a (surprisingly average) WLTP fuel economy figure of around 45mpg.
The X-Trail can be had with either five- or seven seats, and for the four-wheel-drive E-Power version tested, prices start at around £45,000. But is the car good enough to justify that not-inconsiderable cost?
