0.2 -> Do you have any questions about when to use
3.66 -> 'some' and 'any'?
6.36 -> I have some helpful tips for you today.
9.68 -> Hey there I'm Emma from mmmEnglish.
13.34 -> Now these two words,
15.52 -> they're very common English words that are often
18.66 -> confused and misused by English learners.
22.88 -> And although they seem to have very similar meanings,
25.8 -> they're not often interchangeable
28.5 -> so it's important to know which word to use
31.54 -> and when to use it.
32.88 -> In this video I'm going to clear up some of that
35.26 -> confusion so that you can avoid making those
37.94 -> mistakes in the future.
39.38 -> We'll go through the meaning of 'some' and 'any'
42.68 -> the general uses and some of the exceptions
46.04 -> to the rules so make sure you keep paying attention
49.18 -> throughout the video.
50.5 -> There's going to be a quiz at the end.
52.28 -> Now if you're not a subscriber yet, then click that button
55.48 -> just down there and become one.
57.92 -> You can also use the tools down there to
60.4 -> slow down the video speed
62.6 -> in case I'm speaking a little too quickly for you.
65.6 -> You can control that right down there.
76.62 -> The first thing you need to know is that we use
78.9 -> 'some' and 'any' before plural
81.72 -> and uncountable nouns.
84 -> And we do it to talk about a certain number or amount
87.58 -> of something when we don't actually know exactly
90.68 -> how much or how many of that thing we want.
94.3 -> So I need to buy some bread.
96.8 -> I'm saying that I need to buy an amount of bread
99.94 -> but I'm not being specific, I'm not saying exactly
103.2 -> what number or amount I need.
108.74 -> Now again we want to know if there's pasta left,
111.9 -> but I don't really care about the specific amount,
115.3 -> I just want to know if there is an amount.
118.08 -> Now because 'some' and 'any' are both used in quite
121.34 -> similar situations, it's often difficult to know
124.64 -> which one you should use, right?
127.54 -> So we're going to go over the general grammar rules
130.68 -> to help you decide which one to use.
133.24 -> But definitely stick around until the end of this lesson,
136.92 -> there are some exceptions to these rules
139.64 -> that you need to know.
141.28 -> And I'll get to those in a little bit but later, later, later on,
145.08 -> I've also got a quiz that's going to help you to test
147.74 -> what you've learned in this lesson.
149.74 -> So as a general rule, we use 'some' with positive
154.36 -> or affirmative sentences.
170.98 -> Now we can use 'any' with negative sentences
174.7 -> and questions, okay?
191.2 -> So that's pretty simple right?
193.04 -> There are some clear rules there
195.26 -> but like many things in English, there are several
198.86 -> exceptions to this rule as well.
201.06 -> Now this is where the fun starts.
204.42 -> Alright take a look at this question.
211.92 -> We use 'some' and it's a question.
217.1 -> Now this is an exception.
218.84 -> We use 'some' in questions when you're
221.4 -> pretty sure that the answer will be yes.
225.54 -> I'm asking you to pick up coffee because I know
227.86 -> there's a high probability or a strong chance
231.26 -> that you'll say yes, that you will buy the coffee.
235 -> Now often questions that we are expecting the answer
237.88 -> to be yes are offers or requests okay?
245.64 -> Alright I'm being polite.
247.1 -> I'm asking you but I know that you probably want
249.92 -> milk in your coffee.
252.24 -> Now if I said
255.62 -> I'm asking because I actually don't really know
259.24 -> if you have milk in your coffee or not.
265.56 -> Now I already know that you need money
268.4 -> and I'm expecting you to say yes
271.4 -> but if I said:
275.36 -> I'm asking
275.96 -> because honestly I don't really know the answer.
278.6 -> Now this isn't the only exception
281.56 -> okay? We have a couple more important ones
283.98 -> to get through but that one
285.4 -> is an important one to remember.
287.36 -> Alright so that was a very subtle difference.
290.46 -> Now let's move on to the second exception.
293.54 -> Before I said that 'any' is used in
297.22 -> negative sentences and not positive ones, right?
300.04 -> Do you remember? But you can use 'any' in an
303.22 -> affirmative sentence or a positive sentence
306.6 -> if the sentence has a negative feeling.
311.5 -> Now positive sentences that include negative feelings
316.58 -> usually have words like:
323.02 -> in them.
329.04 -> Now this sentence is a positive structure
332.4 -> but we're talking about the lack of money
335.36 -> which is a negative feeling or a negative idea.
338.58 -> That's what we're talking about.
344.26 -> Now there's one last situation where 'any' can be used
348.62 -> in an affirmative sentence.
350.66 -> Now this is a special exception because it's also the
353.76 -> only time that you might see 'any' or 'some'
356.78 -> being used with a singular countable noun.
359.92 -> That's a general rule that we're breaking here.
362.7 -> We can use 'any' in an affirmative sentence
365.46 -> and commonly with a singular countable noun
369.4 -> as a way to say it doesn't matter which one, alright?
377.54 -> It doesn't matter which road you take, it's not important.
381.12 -> You can take any of them.
385.4 -> It's not important which shirt you take,
388.68 -> you can have whichever one you want.
393.1 -> It doesn't matter which one.
395.96 -> Now that we've been through some examples,
399.2 -> you really shouldn't have any problem
401.98 -> with this little quiz now, okay?
404.44 -> Let's do the first one together.
406.56 -> All you need to do is choose the correct word,
408.88 -> 'any' or 'some'.
417.4 -> Could be either but let's go with 'any'
420.4 -> because 'any' is used in a question, especially
424.06 -> one that you don't know the answer to and usually
427.2 -> you're asking because you don't know.
429.38 -> Now if I was asking someone who I thought had kids,
433.38 -> then I'd probably use a question tag and I'd say:
440.14 -> Next one.
444.36 -> Now let's imagine that the person we're asking is a huge
448.1 -> fan of dessert and always wants more.
451.98 -> Alright so we probably can assume that the answer
455.68 -> will be yes and it's an offer.
458.32 -> So 'some' is the correct answer here.
471.5 -> Now this is a singular countable noun here, it's a clue.
477.88 -> So it would have to be 'any'.
485.48 -> Any or some?
490.3 -> You got it. It's 'any', right?
492.3 -> Because 'any' is used in negative sentences.
496.32 -> Now for the last one let's go with:
504.28 -> Now even though this is an affirmative sentence,
508.44 -> we're using 'hardly' which gives us a negative
511.74 -> feeling, right? So we would use 'any'.
515.4 -> So how did you go? Did you get any of them wrong?
519.76 -> Tell me in the comments below if you did
522.04 -> and let me know if you've got any questions about them.
525.56 -> Try to write some example sentences of your own
529.18 -> so that I can come down and check them out.
531.14 -> The English language is full of confusing word pairs
535.06 -> just like these ones
536.74 -> that are very similar in meaning
538.32 -> but they're not exactly the same.
540.58 -> And I've got a whole playlist of those lessons right here
544.8 -> so if you want to keep going with these
547.14 -> types of lessons, you can go check that one out.
549.74 -> And if you've got a specific pair of words that are
553.28 -> particularly confusing for you, then let me know
555.74 -> in the comments below.
556.98 -> I'll try and make a lesson about it really soon.
559.76 -> But for now, let's go check out this lesson together.
