We’ve added a ton of bits to Miata to make it fast, and the only thing we’ve really added for safety on the track has been our roll cage. So today we are looking at aftermarket seats and harnesses. Yes, they look cool BUT does it make sense to add them to your car, should you even be rocking a sweet OMP seat and OMP harnesses? And if so how do you install them? Let’s do this!

0.32 -> - Does this ever happen to you?
1.18 -> Do you feel like you're
being thrown around
2.98 -> when you're trying to drive hard?
4.25 -> You're trying to steer precisely,
5.61 -> but you're also trying to brace yourself
7.44 -> against the steering wheel
8.65 -> while you're trying to remember
10 -> just where the pedals actually are.
11.61 -> If only there was some cool way
13.77 -> to lock your body in the
perfect driving position
16.24 -> so that you could just
focus on clipping apexes
18.52 -> and shaving seconds.
19.92 -> If only.
20.79 -> Well, today we're gonna be installing
22.16 -> a set of seats and harnesses in the Miata.
24.23 -> And along the way we'll show
you what to look out for
26.52 -> if you're trying to do a
set of seats and harnesses
28.82 -> in your car.
29.83 -> I'm Zach and this is "Money Pit".
31.63 -> Let's take a seat.
32.64 -> (thunder)
(hip hop beat)
37.4 -> Now we've done a lot of stuff to the Miata
39.53 -> to keep it planted into the ground,
41.23 -> but we really haven't done anything
42.72 -> to keep me planted to the Miata.
44.78 -> Usually I say
45.66 -> seats are one of the first
things you should do to a car
47.7 -> because of how much of
an improvement they make
49.76 -> for the whole driving experience.
51.18 -> But today we're gonna be installing
52.88 -> a set of OMP's racing seats and harnesses.
55.61 -> Even with how impressed I honestly am
57.44 -> with the stock Miata seats,
59 -> I've got a sneaking suspicion
60.48 -> these are gonna blow them
right out of the water.
62.75 -> But I guess we're just
gonna have to install them
64.46 -> to find out if they're actually worth it.
66.2 -> So today, along the way,
67.35 -> we're gonna to be talking about
68.3 -> how to choose a set of seats for yourself,
70.16 -> how to size them to yourself,
how to install them,
72.99 -> how to choose harnesses,
how to install those,
75.47 -> We're gonna be talking about
76.33 -> a lot of seats and harnesses stuff today,
78.56 -> so I'm gonna try not to forget anything.
80.12 -> But the first thing that we need to do
81.76 -> is get those old seats out of the Miata.
83.65 -> So why do you even want install
85.24 -> a set of racing seats in your car anyway?
87.29 -> Well, first, to me, in my opinion,
88.72 -> the biggest thing is the
support that they give you.
90.95 -> When you're driving hard
and hitting corners,
93 -> you know what they say,
93.833 -> a body in motion tends to stay in motion
96.09 -> and your body wants to
go in a straight line
98.29 -> when you're cornering.
99.4 -> So stock seats don't really
hold you in place very well.
102.29 -> They're usually pretty flat
103.3 -> and they don't give you much side support.
105.1 -> But a good set of racing seats,
106.77 -> that'll lock your whole thing in so well
109.23 -> that you can just focus on driving.
110.91 -> And that is important.
112.042 -> (synth music)
116.91 -> First off the stock seat
is a reclining seat,
119.72 -> it's got a steel frame in there,
121.74 -> where this is a fixed
back with a resin frame.
124.91 -> So being a fixed back and
made the way it's made,
127.44 -> allows this thing to be FIA certed
129.34 -> so it can be raced with
in sanctioned race events
133.1 -> where this cannot.
134.29 -> On the stock seat you can see
135.65 -> that the butt area is pretty dang flat.
139.33 -> You just basically sit on it.
141.01 -> Whereas the racing seat, this OMP,
142.81 -> it's like a big crater
that you climbed down into
145.61 -> and then it holds you tightly.
147.41 -> It gives you support on
both sides of your thighs
149.45 -> and support up here for your shoulders
151.03 -> and the whole way down your torso.
152.82 -> You're supported from all
that side to side motion
154.93 -> you experience when you're cornering.
156.47 -> So that's the whole point of this thing,
157.94 -> that's what keeps you locked
in, is these big sidewalls.
161.63 -> You basically just climbed
down into this thing
163.39 -> and you're trapped in a good way.
165.01 -> So you might think
166.08 -> that we're ready to slam
these seats into the Miata,
167.95 -> but it's gonna take a
few steps to get there.
170.24 -> We've got to figure out
171.17 -> our side mounts and our floor mounts,
172.77 -> figure out where to position the seat.
174.62 -> There's a lot to do.
175.66 -> But first let's talk about
how you even choose a seat
178.47 -> and choose a seat that fits you.
180.38 -> I bought these seats sight
unseen and they fit me great,
183.15 -> so how did I do that?
184.36 -> Well most, if not all seat manufacturers,
187.07 -> have seat measurements
available generally online.
190.57 -> So you can take some
measurements of your body
192.97 -> and then compare them to the
measurements of the seat.
194.76 -> It's often in millimeters,
196.12 -> so get your millimeter tape measure out
198.35 -> and just do some kind of
rudimentary measurements
200.62 -> and you'll be able to tell
201.59 -> if the overall dimensions of the seat
203.54 -> will fit in the space
you're trying to put them.
205.71 -> The other thing you have to keep in mind
206.95 -> is where the harness
pass-throughs land on your body.
210.67 -> Now the lower ones are usually
just always gonna be good,
213.17 -> but the upper ones matter and
it depends on how tall you are
216.62 -> for how they fit you.
217.84 -> You know, one of the easiest way
219.34 -> to get a set that will probably fit you
221.23 -> is to get a set of seats
with these big holes
223.8 -> because they fit a wide range of heights.
226.08 -> You can see I'm sort of at
the upper end of that range,
229.56 -> but you want the seatbelts to be able
231.03 -> to pass straight through the seats
232.67 -> and straight onto the
top of your shoulders
234.85 -> with no real angle.
236.16 -> Now if you're not a real race car driver
238.12 -> you might think you don't
need an FIA certified seat,
240.55 -> and that is technically true.
242.08 -> But I would still recommend getting one
243.5 -> because it's safety equipment after all
245.53 -> and it is literally holding your life.
248.05 -> After that it's just personal preference.
250.17 -> Pick what you like.
251.31 -> So now that we've got
our seats picked out,
253.13 -> let's figure out how
we put them in the car.
255.71 -> First thing we're gonna need
is a set of side mounts.
257.806 -> (funky music)
259.67 -> So this is a side mount
260.83 -> and basically its job
is to mount to the seat
263.48 -> and then figure out how
to mount it to the floor
265.57 -> or the lower bracket or your slider,
267.27 -> whatever you have beyond
this, we'll get there.
269.479 -> So you can see there are
a lot of hole options
271.7 -> and this basically lets you determine
273.97 -> the angle of your seat,
275.6 -> whether or not it's upright or
leaned back or what have you,
278.91 -> and then some options on
the lower side of things.
281.8 -> So these go between the seat
and what we'll talk about next,
285.12 -> your floor mount.
286.47 -> This is a floor mount
287.41 -> and it's made specifically for the Miata.
289.47 -> The holes on it line up
290.82 -> with the holes for the seat
and the floor which is great.
294.44 -> The problem is that where
that would position the seat
297.27 -> is basically right under
the steering wheel.
299.2 -> The Miata's pretty small
300.23 -> and I usually have the
seat all the way back.
302.14 -> So to make this floor mount
work with these side mounts,
304.81 -> I would basically have to
install the side mounts
307.06 -> hanging way off the back
of these floor mounts
309.67 -> and it just doesn't seem very sturdy.
311.54 -> So to get the optimal driving position
313.99 -> I'm gonna put this thing on sliders
315.11 -> so we can move the driving position.
317.05 -> I'm gonna reuse the stock
sliders with these side mounts
319.69 -> and not use these floor mounts.
321.99 -> Okay, so now I've got
the slider off the seat
323.81 -> and mounted into the car
324.9 -> so we know this is the way the
slider wants to be mounted.
327.81 -> Now I can set our side
mounts and our seat on top
330.82 -> and mark where I need to drill
my hole into the side mounts.
333.55 -> It appears
335.8 -> that we've got two holes that'll work.
338.58 -> Sweet.
339.6 -> So we got to put a bolt in
there, sandwich that together,
342.13 -> and then we'll make holes
343.23 -> at the back ends of the side mounts
345.65 -> for that hole to mount up to.
348.246 -> (funky beat)
352.664 -> All right, so in trying
to mock up these sliders
354.48 -> to get our holes drilled
355.85 -> I found that this spring,
357.59 -> where the spring is retained
for the slider mechanism itself
360.8 -> runs into our side
mounts right about there.
363.73 -> So I'm gonna have to
cut just a little notch
365.97 -> to clear that part of the spring.
367.88 -> Should be easy.
368.785 -> (saw buzzing)
(funky beat)
371.24 -> That should be plenty of room
for our little spring to sit.
374.11 -> Now we've got some bare metal
so I'm gonna paint that up.
376.69 -> We've got the fronts of our sliders
378.04 -> bolted to the side mounts
379.42 -> and now we're just trying to figure out
380.75 -> where to put the holes in
the back of the side mounts
382.84 -> to mount in the back of the sliders.
384.28 -> Since we know the fronts are
in the spot that they should be
386.93 -> and this fits into the car,
388.85 -> basically gonna to measure
up the side of the side mount
391.02 -> and make sure that this measurement
392.45 -> from the edge of the side
mountain to the edge of the slider
394.5 -> is the same measurement all the way up.
396.75 -> I'll do that on both sides
so everything's square
399.06 -> and then I'll measure
the gap between my holes,
401.2 -> double check with the car
402.33 -> to make sure everything looks right,
404.14 -> then I'll mark my holes, cut them,
406.4 -> and install the seat.
407.76 -> Well I'm basically the second
from the most upright setting.
410.51 -> So the seat's gonna be pretty upright
411.96 -> but that's what I want.
412.91 -> It fits the best in the car that way
415.21 -> and should be the safest that way as well.
420.93 -> Be putting some low strength thread locker
423.08 -> just to make sure nothing vibrates apart.
424.69 -> I would like my seat
to stay where I put it.
427.756 -> (chill hip hop beat)
431.516 -> (Zach grunting)
433.51 -> All right, our seats are all done
435.21 -> and ready to go in the car.
436.26 -> But before we can put them in
437.52 -> we gotta put the lower mounting points
439.62 -> for our new harnesses in place.
441.51 -> Should be pretty quick and easy,
443.05 -> and then we can put the seats in
444.23 -> for hopefully the last
time then get these done.
447.15 -> So the harnesses come with these eyelets
448.61 -> and these take the place
449.62 -> of the factory seatbelt
mounting and locations
451.93 -> for the buckle and the
lower mounting point here.
454.61 -> We gonna to put some blue
on these bad mama jammas,
458.14 -> and then she'll thread right in.
460.006 -> (Zach making weird noises)
461.48 -> Stock belt out of here so we
can use its mounting point
464.61 -> for our new eyelets.
465.686 -> (wrench rattling)
468.67 -> Hey, I'm sitting in an
OMP seat in the Miata
472 -> and it's got four bolts in the floor.
474.72 -> Doesn't have any padding in it
475.8 -> but a step in the right direction,
477.96 -> we're making progress.
479.06 -> So that's one seat officially in.
481.6 -> Now we got to do the other.
483.484 -> (Zach grunting)
485.16 -> Pretty dang easy.
485.993 -> Ah, dang, hit the door bar.
487.8 -> Ah crap.
490.13 -> I guess that's gonna happen.
492.78 -> Gotta do a little bit of persuading
495.27 -> but so that I don't have
to take the carpet out
497.27 -> and I can just smash the carpet
I put a glove on my hammer.
501.62 -> It's not bad, it's really not much,
503.45 -> I just want to give this
lower corner of the seat
507.71 -> a little more room.
508.886 -> (hammer banging)
514.9 -> Alright, that's two seats in a Miata.
517.21 -> Now we just got to do those belts.
518.502 -> (funky music)
520.85 -> So we've got these two inch
four-point harnesses from OMP
525.08 -> and they should be a breeze to install.
526.64 -> First I'm just gonna
run the shoulder belts
529.26 -> back to the rear.
530.64 -> We'll deal with them later.
532.17 -> You got the lap belt,
533.46 -> and then this little clip just
goes through the side here.
538.79 -> And then this will go down
539.81 -> onto the eyelet we put down there.
541.484 -> And then about a bada bing bada boom,
543.17 -> that one is done.
544.18 -> Now let's do the same thing over here.
545.77 -> Bring this through the side.
548.24 -> Alright, so now the lap belts are in.
550.34 -> Now we need to do the shoulders.
551.69 -> All right, so this is similar
to strapping on a helmet
554.28 -> if you know what I'm talking about.
555.29 -> We're just using a link like this
556.87 -> and this is gonna be what
holds our seatbelt in place.
559.67 -> Now the first thing you want to consider
561.27 -> is how long you want your
shoulder belts to be.
563.29 -> You want them to be snug on you,
565.11 -> but in the case of this
car where we have sliders
568.29 -> and shorter people might be driving it,
570.24 -> I'm gonna leave a little
extra adjustment room
572.74 -> just in case somebody
short starts driving.
575.14 -> So this is about where I
want the seats to hang.
577.99 -> Our link is gonna end up on this side.
580.95 -> So over, under, over, under,
583.43 -> then we got one more to cram through
586.15 -> just to send it backwards.
588.35 -> All right, same thing over here,
589.7 -> just gonna click these
things into these things.
591.91 -> You know what I'm talking about.
593.27 -> So they give you options
594.35 -> where you could add some anchor points
597.13 -> for these threaded eyelets to the rear
599.21 -> if you don't have a roll bar
or if your situation's unique
602.31 -> and it's the same thing
603.143 -> for five-point and six-point harnesses
605.26 -> where you'll basically have to
607.13 -> weld a receptacle for
an anchor to the floor
609.78 -> in front of your seat rather.
611 -> Anytime you hear a number and then point,
613.73 -> that's how many points of
attachment it has to the car.
616.444 -> So you can see we've got one, two,
618.72 -> and then three, four
down in those eyelets.
621.06 -> So these are four-point harnesses.
622.65 -> five-points are similar and
then they connect to the floor
625.85 -> through the front of the seat.
627.28 -> Why would you potentially
go with a five or six-point
629.27 -> over a four-point?
630.6 -> Well, it's an added level of safety.
633.16 -> You get into a front end collision
634.46 -> and your body wants to go forward.
636.33 -> As your body goes forward it
pulls on your shoulder straps,
640.4 -> which pulls up on your lap belt.
642.65 -> So when your lap belt pulls
up it goes over your hips
645.77 -> and into your soft bits,
647.22 -> and that is not where you want it.
648.86 -> So if you're gonna run a four-point
649.99 -> it's absolutely critical
651.15 -> that you make sure your
belts are set up right,
653.2 -> and that's taking into account
that your seats fit you
655.84 -> and that the angle of your shoulder belts
658.7 -> back to the harness bar or your roll bar
660.77 -> or whatever you've got
your belts attached to
663.37 -> is relatively straight, no more
than a 20 degree tilt down.
667.5 -> But the truth is that as long
as my belt is set up right
670.79 -> I'm not personally too
concerned about submarining.
673.78 -> My biggest concern is getting into a wreck
676.06 -> and my body staying dead still
678.01 -> and my head just whipping
and rolling down the track.
681.55 -> So I was proactive, I want
to keep my head on my body,
685.53 -> so I did something about
it, let me show you.
687.31 -> It's pretty sweet.
688.143 -> I got a HANS device.
(bell dings)
690.69 -> Listen, we're taking this
thing to the track soon
692.82 -> and I want to be pretty safe when I do it.
694.97 -> The idea is that without this device,
697.16 -> if I were to get in an accident,
698.73 -> my head can just break my neck right off.
701.56 -> So the point of the HANS device
702.84 -> is to stop that from happening.
704.39 -> It attaches your helmet to
basically your rib cage kind of
707.84 -> and limits the range of
motion that your head has
710.67 -> no matter what.
711.67 -> So this thing should
keep my head on my body,
714.53 -> this thing should keep
my head in one piece,
716.6 -> and that thing should keep the rest of me
718.8 -> as good as I am now.
720.07 -> Let's finish up those final adjustments
722.11 -> and that should do it.
723.513 -> (Zach groaning)
724.573 -> - - submarine. (groaning)
728.1 -> Ooh, they're in and they feel great.
730.62 -> I am pumped.
731.95 -> But the fact is that the
car kind of took a turn
735.28 -> towards being more of a track car today.
737.15 -> But that's okay 'cause
we're going to the track.
739.92 -> We're going to Big Willow
next week in the Miata.
742.49 -> I can't wait, it's
gonna to be so much fun.
744.38 -> We're taking the Miata,
we're taking the E36,
746.3 -> we're taking -- 2 Series.
747.62 -> We're even gonna try to take my RV.
750.06 -> Not to go on the track,
but just to hang out in.
753.1 -> I can't wait.
753.933 -> I got to tell you it's
gonna to be so much fun.
