A LUXURY Hybrid Toyota! 2023 Toyota Crown Review

In my 2023 Toyota Crown review, I’ll give you a tour of this new luxury hybrid sedan. The Toyota Crown 2023 model year is the 16th generation of this car and this time it’s coming back to the United States as a replacement for the Avalon in Toyota’s lineup.

While other markets will get a Toyota Crown SUV, the United States will only get it as a high-riding sedan variant. You have two engine options to pick from, both being hybrids. The model I tested here is the 2023 Toyota Crown Platinum which carries the Hybrid Max powertrain making 340 horsepower. Is the new Toyota Crown worth buying? With prices starting at $39,950 for the base XLE and the Crown Platinum starting at over $52,000 - it’s not an easy decision. That said - let’s take a closer look at the 2023 Toyota Crown.

.51 -> The Crown.
.35 -> This name holds the distinction
.73 -> of being the longest running passenger car nameplate put
.37 -> on any Toyota model.
.99 -> It's been sold in Japan, since 1955
.36 -> and came to the United States for a short run in 1958.
.11 -> Well, the Crown is now back and this time,
.54 -> it comes to us as a hybrid Sedan-Crossover looking thing
.78 -> that will replace the Avalon.
.31 -> My name is Omar and I'm out in Nashville, Tennessee,
.71 -> with the all new Toyota Crown.
.184 -> (smooth relaxing music)
.62 -> - So if you're not sure how to classify the Crown,
.99 -> don't worry. You're not alone.
.07 -> Apparently, Toyota doesn't know either.
.05 -> Check out this teaser video they dropped
.91 -> before the official reveal of this thing.
.036 -> (upbeat music)
.5 -> - [Omar] So yeah, it looks like a Sedan,
.97 -> but it also looks like a Crossover.
.62 -> The Crown is nearly four inches taller than the Camry,
.5 -> but yet, this design kind of reminds me
.93 -> of a fast back Crossover.
.52 -> That said, the Crown is now in its 16th generation,
.07 -> which is pretty crazy,
-> and apparently this isn't the only Crown body style.
.18 -> Toyota also unveiled three other body styles
.13 -> including a larger Sedan that actually looks like a Sedan,
.25 -> and then you have two Crown SUVs.
.8 -> One will be smaller and one will be larger.
.99 -> And apparently, none of those body styles
.67 -> are coming to the United States.
.29 -> Why? I guess we're not cool enough, but I do believe
.23 -> that we've shown how much we obsess over SUVs.
.11 -> So Toyota, please bring over the real Crown SUVs.
.01 -> I'm sure they'll sell pretty well here.
.56 -> That said, let's talk about the North American Crown.
.87 -> This Sedan/SUV Crossover looking vehicle
.38 -> comes standard with all wheel drive and is available
.75 -> with two powertrain options, both being hybrids.
.54 -> It also replaces the Avalon as the flagship luxury offering
.39 -> from Toyota before you hop into the Lexus world.
.88 -> So, is this all will drive hybrid something
.28 -> that you should consider?
.42 -> Let's find out.
.59 -> Let me give you a quick tour of the new Crown.
.24 -> We'll talk more about the exterior design.
.74 -> We'll check out the interior and then I'll get back out
.08 -> on the road and give you my opinion
.46 -> on whether or not if you should consider buying one.
.65 -> Make sure you hit like, make sure you hit subscribe.
.81 -> All right, let's do this.
.3 -> All right, so let's start off with how much the Crown costs.
.28 -> You have three trims to pick from including the base XLE,
.83 -> the Limited, and the top of the line, Platinum.
.23 -> The base XLE starts right under $40,000,
.9 -> while the Crown Limited starts at $45,550.
.89 -> The top of the line Crown Platinum will start
.69 -> at $52,350, where it will be essentially
.9 -> fully loaded and maxed out.
.58 -> And when I say maxed out, I'm not just talking
.29 -> about the options and packages you can get on the Crown.
.54 -> I'm talking about what's under that hood.
.4 -> You see the Crown Platinum is the only Crown to
.5 -> get the more powerful HybridMax powertrain.
.08 -> It consists of a 2.4 liter four-cylinder turbocharge engine
.26 -> with a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor
.57 -> that helps it make 340 horsepower
.24 -> and 400 pound feet of torque.
.31 -> The XLE and the Limited get the slower hybrid
.5 -> set up with a 2.5 liter non turbo four-cylinder
.89 -> making 236 horsepower and 163 pound feet of torque.
.84 -> And if you're somebody that doesn't like CVT transmissions,
.42 -> definitely go for the Platinum HybridMax because that's
.06 -> the only one that gets a six speed automatic transmission.
.45 -> The XLE and the Limited get what Toyota calls an,
.85 -> ECVT transmission.
.56 -> Now in terms of fuel economy,
.67 -> both of these will get these many miles per gallon.
.77 -> Come on, I can't remember all of that.
.15 -> The regular hybrid one obviously gets better mileage
.43 -> but you can put 87 regular Octane
.35 -> in both of these and you have a 14.5 gallon tank capacity.
.37 -> All right, so before we continue talking
.9 -> about the exterior design, let's hop inside
.76 -> and check out the interior of the new Crown.
.01 -> So when I first got in here, I was pretty impressed
.99 -> by the layout of everything and the high quality materials.
.81 -> Now take that with a grain of salt
.04 -> because I have been spending more time in the Platinum
.17 -> during the drive event here in Nashville, but overall
.66 -> it's a pretty comfortable place to be.
.49 -> Now, it's been a while since I've been in an Avalon,
.62 -> but I felt like the Avalon was a bit more premium
.81 -> and spacious than the Crown.
.22 -> That said, the seats on the Crown are pretty comfortable.
.44 -> The XLE comes with SofTex fabric seats while the Limited
.59 -> and the Platinum both get nice luxurious leather seats.
.19 -> All Crown trims come standard
.72 -> with power adjustable front seats, which I am so happy
.9 -> that it does because it's a must
.64 -> if Toyota's going to push this as their new flagship.
.52 -> Although, the steering wheel is actually manually adjustable
.07 -> so that's a bit disappointing.
.84 -> Nonetheless, all Crowns from the XLE
.88 -> to the Platinum come standard with heated front seats.
.43 -> If you want ventilated front seats,
.41 -> you can only get those on the Limited and the Platinum.
.93 -> Those two trims will also give you a heated steering wheel
.33 -> along with heated rear seats.
.07 -> You also get dual zone climate control
.75 -> across the board so you don't have to fight
.37 -> with your passenger about how hot or cold it is.
.98 -> I'm not sure if that actually works.
.15 -> I always sync the temperature
.53 -> when I use duals on climate controls, anyway.
.78 -> All right, so hop in the second row of the Crown
.85 -> and you're working with 39 inches of leg room back here.
.24 -> I'm about six foot tall. That is my seating position.
.37 -> As you can see, I have a good amount of room
.23 -> and the seating position itself back here
.147 -> is actually very comfortable
.62 -> and the seats themselves are very comfortable.
.51 -> It isn't just an afterthought, they're really well cushioned
.18 -> very comfortable for a long drive.
.58 -> But yeah, the rear seats in this thing
.96 -> are just as comfortable as the front.
.97 -> Now let's get back up front and talk about the tech.
.82 -> All Crown trims come standard
.32 -> with the 12.3 inch touchscreen display in the middle
.63 -> that houses Toyota's Drive Connect entertainment system.
.42 -> It's a pretty simple and easy system to use
.97 -> but it still bothers me
.96 -> that you don't have an actual home screen
.49 -> which I hope that they change with an over there update.
.49 -> So you can have a home screen where you can line
.41 -> up some quick info widgets.
.24 -> Nonetheless, you do get wireless Apple CarPlay
.19 -> and wireless Android Auto S standard navigation is part
.34 -> of a subscription service, but who's really going to
.56 -> subscribe to that since they're going to end
.78 -> up using Google Maps or Waze, anyway?
.24 -> The only difference between all three trims
.52 -> of the Crown when it comes
.75 -> to the entertainment and the media game is that the XLE
.78 -> gets a regular sound system while the Limited and the
.09 -> Platinum get an upgraded 11 speaker JBL sound system.
.54 -> All Toyota Crown trims get a 12.3 inch digital
.12 -> gauge cluster display, which is super informative.
.76 -> You can select between a few different displays
.8 -> with the push of a button, including a hybrid
.81 -> system indicator that shows you your system output
.54 -> and regeneration status to encourage eco driving habits.
.62 -> Now, let's talk about the exterior design a little more.
.87 -> I know I said earlier that the Crown is four inches taller
.72 -> than the Toyota Camry, and that's true,
.4 -> but that's only true about the height itself.
.07 -> In terms of ground clearance,
.15 -> this has about the same as the Toyota Camry at 5.8 inches.
.69 -> So it's not like you're going to be buying the Crown
.55 -> over the Camry so you can do some light off-roading.
.67 -> Nonetheless, the taller height of the Crown makes getting
.07 -> in and out of it a little easier
.45 -> and you have a better view of the road.
.19 -> That said, all trims of the Crown come standard
.26 -> with LED headlamps and LED daytime running lights,
.69 -> the Limited and the Platinum
.74 -> get upgraded quad LED headlamps.
.11 -> And I gotta say the lights actually give this
.97 -> thing quite a bit of character.
.53 -> The front end of the new Crown is actually pretty cool.
.57 -> I just wish that we would get the real Sedan,
.43 -> and the real SUV here in the states.
.44 -> Swing around the back and you have LED taillights
.51 -> that span the full width of the rear
.95 -> and which is what every brand does now.
.62 -> And you have this large Crown lettering.
.66 -> Now here's something interesting.
.74 -> Even though the Crown has a fast back style
.38 -> it still has a real Sedan like trunk and you can pop it open
.313 -> by using a button located right here.
.3 -> And once you get it open,
.17 -> you're working with a total of 15.2 cubic feet.
.86 -> And it's not bad, but I still wish
.33 -> that Toyota went with the fast back
.77 -> or lift back styles giving you more cargo capacity.
.56 -> But hey, at least you do have 60-40 split rear seats
.12 -> and you get a nice little Toyota Crown matte right there.
.15 -> That said, the other way to tell a Platinum apart
.4 -> from the XLE and Limited is
.66 -> if you see a Crown in this two tone paint job.
.48 -> Not sure if I'm a fan of this dual tone thing going on here
.6 -> it might appeal to some people, but not me.
.27 -> Also, the only color that's free 99 is black.
.03 -> All other colors will cost you extra.
.22 -> As for the wheel game, you're working with 19 inch wheels
.53 -> on the XLE and Limited and 21 inch wheels on the Platinum.
.19 -> All right, before I give you my final thoughts
.54 -> on how it is to drive the Crown
.74 -> and whether or not you should buy one
.91 -> let me put in a few important daily ownership
.74 -> highlights that I'll love to show all of you.
.877 -> You have four cup holders, two in the front right there
.21 -> and then you have two in the center armrest right there.
.78 -> Here are the keys to the Crown.
.95 -> Same old Toyota key.
.63 -> Would've been cool to have a Crown logo back here but, nope.
.94 -> Door close sound from the outside
.481 -> (door closing) - [Omar] And inside.
.3 -> (door closing) - [Omar] Solid.
.71 -> Charging game wise, all Crowns come standard
.72 -> with the wireless charger where you stand your phone
.25 -> up vertically, and you have two USB-C ports right there.
.62 -> Those sitting in the back are also working
-> with two USB-C ports.
.5 -> And of course, let's do an indicator
.97 -> in horn sound test. Indicator first.
.881 -> (turning signal clicking) - [Omar] Pretty simple.
.73 -> Now for the horn sound. (horn honking)
.94 -> - [Omar] Solid.
.26 -> All right, so let's take the Crown Platinum for a spin.
.87 -> The quicker one, according to Toyota,
.61 -> the HybridMax one here will do 0 to 60
.67 -> in 5.7 seconds, while the regular hybrid will do it in 7.6.
.99 -> So yeah, that's a significant difference.
.66 -> Now, you do have a couple of drive modes to work with here.
.79 -> The regular hybrid model just gets normal ECO and Sport
.15 -> and I'm guessing those that buy one won't really mess around
.69 -> with changing the drive modes much.
.4 -> However, the HybridMax Crown gets three other drive modes
.25 -> including Sport+, Comfort and Custom.
.04 -> All right, so let's pop this
.24 -> into Sport S+ mode and hit the gas.
.715 -> (car accelerating)
.94 -> - Wow, it really gets going quite a bit.
-> And you would think that,
.833 -> because 340 horsepower is actually pretty substantial and
.62 -> that 400 pound fitted torque really helps get this going.
.25 -> Now when it comes to ride quality
.48 -> the Crown is pretty comfortable.
.04 -> It definitely feels more comfortable than the Camry.
.35 -> This actually shares the same GAK platform with the Camry.
.86 -> And again, I can't remember my last Avalon experience.
.65 -> But yeah, this is probably one of the most
.21 -> comfortable Toyotas that you can buy right now.
.61 -> And handling wise, this thing is pretty solid.
.98 -> The steering feel is nice and firm
.42 -> and the way this takes bends is actually pretty impressive,
.78 -> for what it is.
.98 -> And that's especially true if you get the HybridMax
.44 -> because that features a rear eAxle.
.2 -> So instead of using a transfer case
.88 -> and a drive shaft to the rear wheels
.62 -> the HybridMax Crown uses a rear mounted electric motor.
.8 -> And that allows for electronic all-wheel drive
.57 -> when you need it and it helps the Crown
.86 -> corner a little sharper and better.
.14 -> I'm just gonna pop this in comfort mode and enjoy the ride.
.29 -> Now, in terms of road noise coming into the cabin
.48 -> it's actually pretty quiet in here.
.07 -> Again, you're going for the Lexus experience
.44 -> without going for a Lexus.
.57 -> And that's one of the decisions you're going to have to make
.43 -> if you're gonna buy the Crown.
.87 -> You can either go for the Crown starting at around $40,000
.72 -> or you can pick yourself up
.92 -> a Lexus ES starting at around 47,000.
.16 -> And that might be somewhat of a predicament
.75 -> if you're going for the base Crown XLE.
.27 -> But when it comes to the Crown Platinum,
.83 -> starting at 52,350,
.78 -> I would personally just go for the Lexus ES
.15 -> because, even the most expensive Lexus ES 300 H Ultra Hybrid
.21 -> is just, I think, like
.017 -> $130 or $160 more than this Crown Platinum.
.52 -> Overall, I think this is a solid replacement for the Avalon
.13 -> but as a replacement for the ES, at least for me,
.34 -> the ES is just more appealing in this price segment,
.1 -> when you get up to the Crown Platinum
.87 -> Toyota says that the Crown is targeting a more
-> affluent buyer than the Avalon was.
.89 -> So we'll see if that holds true, either way.
.68 -> Thanks for watching.
.64 -> Make sure you hit like, make sure you hit subscribe.
.77 -> Make sure you follow me on Instagram and on TikTok.
.02 -> My handle is @Omardrives.
.06 -> I'll catch you guys on the next one.
.41 -> Take care. Peace.
.72 -> And yes, I notice that I fumble sometimes when
.73 -> I say subscribe, subscribe, subscribe.
.4 -> You know some, sometimes you're just talking too much
.44 -> and things come out the way they come out.
.6 -> By the way, I just learned this morning
.95 -> that this two tone paint shop
.12 -> for the Crown was a suggestion made
.34 -> by a 20 year old girl when they were designing this.
.74 -> So, there's a story behind that.
.587 -> (smooth relaxing music)
