First Drive Comparison: 2023 Nissan Z vs 2023 Toyota Supra A91-MT / Save the Manuals
First Drive Comparison: 2023 Nissan Z vs 2023 Toyota Supra A91-MT / Save the Manuals
The old Nissan 370Z has been in production since 2008. It is a dinosaur by automotive standards. Now in 2023, the Nissan Z returns but it’s not completely new. Meanwhile, the Toyota Supra that was reintroduced in 2020 finally gets what fans were demanding since its reincarnation. A manual transmission. So with both of these “400 hp” sports cars being new, how do they stack up against each other?
Disclosure: I had the opportunity to test drive both cars at the beginning of December which means cold temperatures and ice on the roads. Both vehicles were equipped with performance summer tires which provide little to no grip when temperatures are hovering around the freezing mark. So unfortunately I was not able to fully explore the dynamics of each vehicle. I couldn’t even reach half their potential for fear of crashing. So this review will be a first drive impression of these cars. But I will try to bring these two together again in the Spring or Summer of 2023 for a proper review.
Starting with the new car first, the 2023 Nissan Z is actually made up of older parts. The chassis is a modified version of the same chassis that the 370Z rides on. The engine is straight from an Infiniti Q60 Red Sport. And the 6-speed manual transmission is also from the old 370Z. But while the Nissan Z is made up of “hand-me-downs”, they all work together to make a pretty potent street car. The twin turbocharged V6 engine produces 400 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque (298 kW \u0026 474 Nm).
On the other hand, the 2023 Toyota Supra’s 3.0L turbocharged inline-6 engine does feel intimidating, despite it having less power… on paper. It is rated for 382 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque (285 kW \u0026 499 Nm). But owners and other publications have dyno tested stock Supras before and the horsepower numbers are just a little above the 400 mark. ----- ➡️➡️ 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗡𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗻 𝗭 𝘃𝘀 𝗧𝗼𝘆𝗼𝘁𝗮 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗿𝗮 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: https://mgreviews.com/first-drive-com… 👉👉 𝗦𝘂𝗯𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗲: / mgreviewsblog ----- #NissanZ #ToyotaSupra #SaveTheManuals #Nissan #Toyota #Supra #SupraA91 #Review ----- 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗠.𝗚.𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MGReviews Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mgreviews/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/MG_Reviews ----- 𝗩𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼 𝗻𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 0:00 Intro - Don’t Forget to Subscribe :) 1:08 Performance - Which car is more fun to drive? 7:07 Comfort - Are they comfortable? 11:44 Odds and Ends - Which one is better equipped? 13:59 Conclusion - Which one should you buy?

0.84 -> to my left the 2023 Nissan
Z with a six-speed manual
5.58 -> to my right the 2023 Toyota Supra with
a six-speed manual let's go for a drive
39.48 -> [Music]
68.58 -> before we get started I have to note that
this video is more of a first impressions
89.7 -> type of review of both cars the Z is from Nissan
Canada and the Supra is owned by a friend of mine
96.36 -> unfortunately the Z was only available during
this time in early December which means frigid
102.24 -> temperatures and guess what snow so I didn't
really have a whole lot of time with the cars and
108.06 -> I couldn't enjoy each one due to the conditions
and the fact that they both had summer Tires
113.46 -> but I will try to get my hands on both cars
again in the spring or summer of 2023 for a
118.74 -> proper review so make sure you subscribe to see
that video starting things off in the Nissan Z it
126.54 -> still has a V6 under the hood but it's not the old
370Z V6 instead it is the V6 from the Infiniti Q60
136.32 -> red sport so it's a three liter v6 that is Twin
turbocharged and it produces 400 horsepower and
143.58 -> 350 pound-feet of torque and the old 370Z you
had to rev the heck out of the engine before it
149.82 -> produced enough torque to get the car going in the
new Z Peak torque has reached at just 1600 RPMs
156.42 -> this makes the car not only faster but also much
more responsive when the engine is at low RPMs
162.48 -> the turbochargers pull up quickly to provide
maximum boost and you can actually see how fast
167.28 -> the turbos are spinning thanks to a new gauge in
the center of the dashboard on city streets like
172.2 -> how I'm driving right now this car feels very
manageable I don't feel intimidated by the 400
178.2 -> horsepower in the 350 pound-feet of torque you
can get this V6 with a 9-speed automatic or you
185.04 -> can get it with the six-speed manual that this one
has it retains the Synchro rev match feature so it
190.98 -> will automatically blip the engine every time you
downshift but you can turn it off at the switch of
196.2 -> a little button right here next to shifter the
shifter doesn't feel quite as crisp as the one
201.12 -> in the Toyota Supra but it does feel more again
user friendly when you're just driving on city
207.78 -> streets however in second gear when shifting into
second gear either from first or from third I have
214.8 -> noticed that it's just a little bit more difficult
to get it into second compared to all the other
219.42 -> gears but other than that I really don't have that
many complaints about this shifter around corners
225.48 -> the Nissan Z feels well it feels more like a
GT sports car it doesn't quite feel as sharp
232.02 -> and as track focused as the Supra the steering
is on the light side actually it's pretty light
237.72 -> for a sports car I prefer it if it was heavier so
that I can actually feel what the front wheels and
242.94 -> front tires specifically are doing and how much
grip they have it is direct and responsive pretty
249 -> much all electric power steerings are but it's
just missing that field it needs to be a little
254.76 -> bit heavier and a little bit less assisted other
big changes to the Z include a stiffer chassis
260.88 -> and a new limited slip differential with the
power that this engine produces the back end
266.4 -> can easily go sideways but thanks to the chassis
updates the 2023z is quite manageable when you're
272.58 -> looking out the side windows if you catch my drift
intent and the Toyota Supra you get a turbocharged
280.38 -> three liter inline six it produces 382 horsepower
and 368 pound-feet of torque according to Toyota
288.72 -> a lot of Independence owners and magazines
and auto reviewers they have tested or they
295.98 -> put the Toyota Supra on the dyno and it's produced
more power than that but all I can say is Toyota
301.5 -> claims 382 horsepower 368 pound-feet of torque
and this car has a lot of power the turbo spool
309.96 -> up immediately you reach Peak torque at just under
2000 RPMs and it is full Boost so this engine is a
318.06 -> little bit more intimidating to drive on city
streets especially when the temperatures are
321.84 -> hovering around the zero Mark like how they are
right now but this is a fabulous engine it has
328.02 -> power and torque pretty much everywhere
in the RPM range response is immediate
335.88 -> it's just so nice as for the transmission it is
a six-speed Manual of course and it's a little
344.16 -> bit crisper to shift than the one in the Z it just
feels much more mechanical than the one in the Z
351.6 -> doesn't feel quite as I wouldn't say sloppy but it
feels tighter than the one in the Z it does have
359.64 -> rev match just like the Nissan Z but I would think
that in this one it's just a little bit faster to
366.54 -> respond and it knows exactly what gear to go to
it's much more satisfying using this transmission
372.3 -> and swapping it between the gears then the one in
the Z one of the first things that you'll notice
378.12 -> as soon as you start driving the Toyota Supra
is just how fast and responsive the steering
382.68 -> is I mean it's almost like telepathy every little
minute input that you give to the steering wheel
388.44 -> the front wheels immediately react on top of all
that it feels a little bit taller and tighter than
395.1 -> the one in the Z I can actually feel what the
front tires are doing plus as an added benefit
401.04 -> it's not too light and it's also not too heavy
so when I'm in rush hour traffic like right now
407.22 -> it's not tiring my arms out it has just enough
weight so overall on a twisty Road or a race
414.06 -> track it's the Supra that shines between these two
that's not to say however that you can't have fun
419.76 -> in the Z either it's just that it feels a bit more
rewarding in the Toyota Supra than in the Nissan Z
426.6 -> [Music]
436.86 -> suspension than the 2023 Toyota Supra as a
result the Z is much more comfortable as a
444.78 -> daily driven car the ride in the Supra is a bit
more jittery and the ride height is lower as well
451.32 -> whereas in the Z it's much more
forgiving when driving over a pothole
455.7 -> inside the Toyota Supra it looks very similar
to all other versions of the Supra except for
461.7 -> the center console obviously they have had to
make it a little bit wider to fit the shifter
466.5 -> as well as the iDrive controllers so it does
protrude a little bit into the passengers area
472.98 -> but it's not too bad they still
have plenty of space on their side
478.14 -> the only little niggle about the interior is the
placement of the cup holders so as you can see I
483.18 -> got a drink in the most backwards cup holder and
if I go to shift into second it gets in the way
490.92 -> you kind of have to do some awkward movements or
maybe like go like this or like this whatever you
498.3 -> can because these cup holders get in the way of
shifting but as for the rest of the Interior it is
505.02 -> very much like a BMW which is totally fine I mean
it all has physical controls climates infotainment
512.34 -> system it is a touch screen of course and it all
just works so I really can't complain about it
519.96 -> as for visibility the mirror and the infotainment
system do block a little bit of the right portion
526.2 -> of the windshield but out the front and out
the sides and even the blind zones on this
530.94 -> side it's not so bad the blind Zone on that
side it is a little bit actually it's quite
536.1 -> blocked by the c-pillar but if you adjust
your mirrors and use the blind spot sensors
542.22 -> you shouldn't have any issues out the back
though well it is a sports car after all so yeah
548.46 -> visibility is limited just like in the Nissan
Z speaking of which let's go sit in that car
555.36 -> in the Z it looks like a Nissan vehicle instead
of something else like a Mitsubishi for example
562.32 -> all the controls are physical including volume
knobs and temperature control knobs the shifter
568.62 -> is in a good place nothing really getting in
the way except for just like in the Supra the
574.92 -> cup holder and single cup holder in this one that
is unless you slide back the armrest then you get
581.58 -> a second one but with the armrest that far back
you don't really have anywhere to rest your elbow
587.94 -> so you got to move it forward to actually rest
your elbow on the armrest and yes the cup holder
594.72 -> kind of does get in your way just a little bit
but it doesn't feel quite as much as the Supra
601.68 -> other than that the infotainment system is
the same one that is used throughout other
605.52 -> Nissan vehicles you still get analog gauges
a boost gauge on the far left a turbo speed
613.02 -> in the middle and a volt gauge on the far right
but you do also have some auxiliary gauges and
619.62 -> the driver display right in front of you which is
fully digital as for visibility again the mirror
626.1 -> does hamper a little bit of the visibility out
the front right but at least you don't have the
631.86 -> infotainment system blocking a little bit from the
bottom portion in the front it's pretty good the
637.74 -> a-pillar is nice and small out the side pretty
good too to the right the c-pillar does block
644.4 -> my blind Zone area but just like the Supra the Z
does have blind spot sensors and if you adjust the
651.72 -> mirrors correctly you shouldn't really have that
many blind zones and finally for space they're
657.48 -> both pretty much identical they both have nearly
identical amounts of Headroom and legroom and at
662.88 -> six foot four I have more than enough space and I
also tested with the two liter Supra which I did a
669.72 -> review earlier in the year and I can easily fit a
helmet while sitting down and not have the helmet
676.62 -> touch the headliner so because both of these cars
have the same amount of Headroom I'm assuming that
682.56 -> the Z also has enough space for a helmet if you
go to track days that is in the trunks the Toyota
689.34 -> Supra has more space at 290 liters while the
Nissan Z has 241 liters but the hatch opening
696.54 -> is much wider in the Z than in the Supra which
makes loading and unloading a bit easier [Music]
712.26 -> both vehicles are equipped with similar basic
features they both have leather upholstery heated
717.84 -> seats Apple carplay and Android auto connectivity
although it's Wireless carplay in the Supra
723.72 -> backup cameras parking sensors automatic climate
control keyless entry and push button start
729.78 -> however the Toyota Supra has a few more features
that are not available in the Nissan Z these
735.3 -> include a built-in navigation system a head-up
display a 12 speaker audio system eight speaker
741.24 -> for the Z and fully power adjustable seats with
adjustable side bolsters in the Z the seats are
747.9 -> power adjustable for front to rear motions and
tilting of the backrest but if you want to change
753.18 -> the seat height lumbar or lift support it's done
manually between these two cars obviously it's the
759.72 -> Nissan Z that's going to attract more eyeballs and
I have noticed more people gawking at it than the
765.18 -> Toyota Supra mind you that could be because it's
painted in a more flamboyant color than this Supra
772.56 -> but colors aside I do like how the new Z
looks especially in person I think it looks
778.68 -> a bit better in person than it does in photos and
videos that being said the Toyota Supra isn't bad
785.1 -> looking either but I would personally pick it
in a different color maybe red just to clarify
793.02 -> the a91 Edition Supra that I'm driving is only
available in two colors burnout which is a matte
799.92 -> white and see you later which is this gray that
has copper highlights one direct sunlight hits it
805.32 -> the standard manual Supra has more options for
colors and finally the price of these two cars
811.8 -> is what really sets them apart the 3 liter 2023
Toyota Super manual starts at 68 640 Canadian
819.12 -> the a91 edition package adds on approximately
sixteen hundred dollars to that price the 2023
825.48 -> Nissan Z starts at forty six thousand four hundred
ninety eight dollars Canadian for the base sport
830.04 -> trim with this performance six-speed manual
trim costing fifty eight thousand four hundred
834.48 -> ninety eight dollars Canadian so essentially a ten
thousand dollar difference between these two cars
840.54 -> so in the end how can I summarize these two
sports cars well the Nissan Z is a little bit
846.9 -> more softer it's more of a sports GT car rather
than a full-on track focused car the suspension
854.76 -> absorbs more bumps in the road and the engine is a
little bit more forgiving and not as intimidating
859.56 -> as the one in the Supra whereas this it has a
much harsher ride but the steering is just so
866.46 -> precise it's fabulous and that engine has tons and
tons of power so that's kind of the best way to
875.34 -> differentiate the two if you want something
that's more comfortable for daily commutes
881.4 -> the Nissan Z is the one you should be looking at
but if you want a track weapon and you don't mind
886.44 -> the harsher ride then of course the Supra is the
one to go for mind you this is significantly more
891.84 -> expensive than the Z but you can get it with a
2-liter engine and I did drive it in the past
897.48 -> and I genuinely do like it but unfortunately
it doesn't have the manual transmission
903.42 -> so for me personally I'm still leaning
more towards a Toyota Supra there's just
908.82 -> something about the way that it drives that
so much more satisfying don't get me wrong
912.84 -> the new Z is fabulous I think it's a really
great car but personally I'd go for the Supra
920.1 -> which one would you go for let me know in the
comments if you want to know more about either
924.66 -> of these two sports cars I wrote a more detailed
comparison review of them over on my website you
930.18 -> can find that link in the video description
or click on the pop-up Banner right up there
934.98 -> and as always I will see you in the next
car or truck or most likely an SUV anyway
942.36 -> thank you for watching please like And
subscribe and I'll see you next time
