2023 Nissan X-TRAIL e-POWER Review | High-tech hybrid power for best X-TRAIL ever, but for how much?

Unique range-extending hybrid powertrain for slick new medium SUV comes at a serious price 👉 Full Review: https://www.carsales.com.au/editorial

The 2023 Nissan X-TRAIL Ti-L e-POWER with e-4ORCE – to give it its full name – is based on the slick new fourth-generation X-TRAIL and brings a high-tech hybrid all-wheel drive powertrain.

But at around $60,000 on the road, the X-TRAIL Ti-L e-POWER is up against some heavy-hitting opposition that extends far beyond its obvious family SUV rivals.

We sent Bruce Newton to the Australian launch of the X-TRAIL e-POWER to see if the innovative tech is worth the extra spend.

1.08 -> Would you pay $60,000 for a Nissan X-Trail, even  an electric one? Well, we've come to Brisbane to
9.24 -> check out the new Nissan X-Trail e-Power with  e-Force to find out if it's worth the money.
16.98 -> Let's check it out.
23.94 -> Even taking into account the steep recent climb  in new car prices, paying around $60,000 for
29.94 -> even the top spec Nissan X-Trail Ti-L e-POWER,  seems a lot of money. After all, the X-Trail has
37.26 -> sold it on through multiple mundane generations  as a straight Ford affordable family SUV,
43.86 -> but the new fourth generation is a clean sheet  design with some pretty cool tech and lots of
50.4 -> luxury in the two e-POWER models at the top  of the range. There are cheaper X-Trails,
56.1 -> of course, with orthodox mechanicals and not so  much gear, but NISSAN is hopeful. Lots of people
61.86 -> will flock to the electrified X-Trails in the  same way people buy lots of Hybrid Toyota Rav4's.
70.5 -> So like the Rav4, the X-Trail e-POWER combines a  petrol engine with e-motors and a small battery
77.22 -> pack. But unlike the Rav, the petrol engine never  drives the wheels. That's the job of the electric
85.8 -> motors. So when you press the accelerator, it's  the e-motors mounted on the front rear axles that
92.4 -> are providing motivation. The X-Trail e-POWER  really is a vehicle that deserves to be called
99 -> all new. There's a new platform underneath  and a new body over the top that's slightly
104.28 -> smaller but much edgier and more aggressive  in its style than the old X-Trail. Floating
109.68 -> roof up here is a distinct styling feature,  as is the Vmotion grill. And check out these
114.96 -> headlights set into the bumper with the DRL's  and the blinkers above them. Now the Ti-L is
121.2 -> distinguished from any other X-Trail by its  20 inch alloy wheels. Externally and insight,
126.42 -> it's the only model to get a host of  luxury features, including a Bows audio.
133.56 -> If you jump out of an old X-Trail into this  interior you are going to be stunned. It's
140.58 -> a complete overhaul and upgrade in terms of  materials, presentation and equipment. The
148.08 -> X-Trail Ti-L e-Power interior is highlighted by  quilted Nappa leather accented seats but other
154.62 -> materials look and feel good around the cabin as  well. The steering wheel and seat offer plenty
160.38 -> of adjustability for the driver. This 12.3 inch  touchscreen, 12.3 inch digital instrument cluster
167.94 -> and 10.8 inch head up display make an impressive  new age tech combo. There's heaps of info here
175.68 -> and it's configurable. Helps justify that $60,000  price tag. There's a generous amount of room in
183.78 -> the rear seat for two adults, and here's something  you don't see often in a medium family SUV,
190.38 -> tri-zone climate control. The new X-Trail e-POWER  has a nice big boot, nearly 600 liters, and
197.4 -> there's also these shelves which you can rearrange  to help keep your loads secure. Sadly though,
204.12 -> there's no spare tire under the floor and that's  no good for a vehicle that presents itself as an
211.08 -> all-wheel drive off roader. But today we are not  off roading but we're gonna hit the highways and
219.42 -> byways and see how the X-Trail e-POWER stacks  up, and whether it's worth all that money.
231.42 -> The X-Trail Ti-L e-POWER relies on electricity  not only for motivation, but for all-wheel drive
242.52 -> traction as well. The result is really strong  e-motor acceleration. But the battery is so
251.58 -> small it's hard to spend much time running on  electricity alone. The petrol engine is often
256.62 -> humming along in the background and that means  you're using fuel and emitting CO2 just like any
262.8 -> other Hybrid. This one says the e-POWER is more  frugal than an orthodox petrol X-Trail. So that
268.86 -> saves you money but you've spent more money up  front to buy the e-POWER, so it's give and take.
274.2 -> The X-Trail e-POWER rise and handles like no other  X-Trail before it. Seriously, it's in another
281.94 -> league. It's wholly competent, a little bit fun  and very refined. In fact, the entire X-Trail
290.34 -> e-POWER driving experience is just unrecognizable.  It's a huge leap forward from its tired,
296.82 -> tinny predecessor. But is it worth $60,000? Well,  yes, I reckon in isolation it is. The PowerTrain
307.74 -> Tech is really impressive. The ride and handling  is hugely improved. The exterior and interior has
315.06 -> been overhauled and upgraded, dramatically, but  it's still an X-Trail and it's still $60,000.
323.22 -> If you can get your head around that then there's  a good vehicle here waiting to be discovered.
