10.478 -> Hi, I am Dustin Abbott.
In 2021, I was considering my next vehicle,
14.715 -> when Ford announced the new Ford Maverick,
17.618 -> a compact unibody truck that,
most interestingly, at least to me,
22.189 -> could come with a hybrid powertrain.
24.525 -> The idea of a versatile vehicle that could
handle some passengers,
29.13 -> could get 40 plus miles per gallon,
31.632 -> but then also have a cleverly designed
four-and-a-half-foot bed,
35.436 -> added up to a very intriguing kind of
active lifestyle vehicle.
39.507 -> Perhaps, like you, I don't do just one thing.
42.676 -> I like to do a lot of things, including
sports, photography, obviously.
46.647 -> But then, also, I do construction,
I do a wide variety of things.
50.718 -> And a byproduct is that I was looking for a vehicle
that could do all of those things.
54.321 -> I've been driving the car for quite a while.
56.49 -> We also have a van that my wife drives.
59.193 -> I'm getting to the age where the kids are
pretty much grown, so
62.73 -> we're about to ditch the van,
and she's gonna go to an SUV.
65.166 -> But I wanted something that would allow me to do
67.535 -> some of the things that we could do with a van
before, including pulling a trailer, obviously,
72.373 -> but without going into that full size,
75.576 -> you know, large truck kind of situation,
which really didn't appeal to me.
79.079 -> So the idea of getting some car-like driving,
overall driving mechanics,
83.651 -> along with the versatility of a small truck,
was appealing to me.
87.955 -> So I decided to take the plunge.
After doing a lot of research,
91.392 -> I put down my deposit and waited nearly a year
for the Hot Pepper Red
95.729 -> XLT Maverick that I specced out to arrive.
99.033 -> I've now had my 2022 Maverick for nearly 15 months.
102.903 -> So the question is, has it proven to be
a good vehicle for
106.774 -> a photographer who lives an active lifestyle?
109.71 -> Well, I'm happy to say that the short answer
is a definitive yes.
113.38 -> But today, I thought I'd just give you
a quick breakdown of
116.517 -> why this vehicle has worked so well for me.
119.386 -> But then, also, to give the major caveat when it comes to
any kind of Ford Maverick.
124.225 -> So some of the things that have really worked for me
as a photographer, is things like
128.629 -> the undereat storage that allows me to always
keep things on hand without disrupting
134.268 -> either the versatility of using my bed, or also
of having passengers in the vehicle. So
140.285 -> underneath there, I always keep a tripod,
144.445 -> and so if I decide to do some kinda shoot or if I need
to jump in front of the camera,
148.015 -> I always have a tripod on hand.
I keep a jacket in there,
152.319 -> kind of a packable puffer jacket.
154.488 -> I also keep rain gear there, a bug spray,
just some of the essentials that,
158.826 -> you know, end up being really, really useful
out in the field.
162.329 -> I've also enjoyed having power in the bed
164.965 -> for either lighting or charging batteries.
It's a 400-watt power outlet.
169.503 -> And so having that there has been really, really convenient
for doing in-bed type things.
174.408 -> Now, it's not enough, just so you know - not enough
to run something like power tools, but
178.579 -> for someone like myself who uses
almost exclusively battery-powered
183.083 -> power tools, I've got a lot of Milwaukee tools,
M18s that I use,
187.855 -> it has allowed me to have a station where I can
keep my batteries charged. And
192.426 -> we've done some pretty major
construction projects built,
194.962 -> you know, basically right out of the bed of my truck
197.598 -> where I've been using that to charge those power tools.
200.734 -> The versatile bed has been really, really, useful as well.
204.738 -> It's allowed me to carry camera equipment, lighting.
208.042 -> But then, of course, tools, lumber, insulation,
luggage, runs to Costco,
213.714 -> even packing mattresses
and moving things like that,
217.151 -> you know, getting large-scale materials
for doing yard work,
221.322 -> all of those things. Obviously,
having a versatile bed, and
224.158 -> the bed here is particularly useful because of the fact that
it's what they call a "flexibed".
228.996 -> And so, it allows you to position the tailgate
at different positions. And so,
232.466 -> even though it's a fairly short bed, I've been able to
put a lot of serious lumber in there,
236.403 -> including many sheets of, you know,
4x8, be it,
239.974 -> you know, drywall or, you know, plywood,
things like that.
244.111 -> But then, also, because I can set it at a position
where nothing ever comes out of it
248.015 -> because it's just angled at the right way.
250.117 -> I've been able to pack in lots of lumber to where I've,
252.886 -> you know, pretty much maxed right out
to the bed capacity,
256.256 -> the carrying capacity of the bed,
which is near 1,500 pounds.
259.693 -> and then carried that.
You know, I've stacked it high,
263.664 -> as you can see, with insulation.
It's just really, really versatile.
267.368 -> The other thing that has been useful to me
is the fact that this is a vehicle
270.204 -> that even though my particular one -
in the hybrid - you can only get it
273.44 -> as a front-wheel drive, at least at the present.
276.143 -> Despite that, however, I've basically has been able to go
anywhere that I wanted to go.
280.981 -> And so I've taken it off-roading to get some--
To do some difficult,
285.152 -> to access hiking trails, or,
287.921 -> you know, also to go out on places where I was
going to do photoshoots.
291.325 -> I've gone through fairly deep snow.
I was in a situation
295.429 -> one time where vehicles all around me
were getting stuck in this drift
299.566 -> that was separating people from an on-ramp
to get onto a major highway,
303.637 -> and I was able to pull through it just fine myself.
306.006 -> And so, having that extra little bit of clearance,
and then also,
310.31 -> obviously, I put good winter tires on the vehicle,
312.846 -> but it's been able to-- Even though I live in a
very snowy place
316.216 -> where I have snow five plus months of the year,
318.552 -> I never got stuck in it.
It did what I needed it to do.
321.688 -> I've put over 15,000 miles in that first year,
324.925 -> and in a whole lot of different driving conditions,
327.394 -> which tends to be the case here in Ontario, Canada.
330.697 -> Through all of that, however,
331.932 -> another thing that has been a standout to me
is the amazing fuel economy.
335.636 -> I have averaged, overall, including a lot of winter driving,
obviously in that first year,
340.407 -> I've averaged 38.4 miles per gallon,
which is pretty amazing
344.611 -> for a vehicle like this, and doing the things
that I have done with it.
349.049 -> That includes time spent towing, lots of time, you know,
hauling construction materials.
353.42 -> Then also, hauling things like a big kayak and
pulling a trailer, various things like that.
358.892 -> And so, that fuel economy is pretty amazing.
361.829 -> I've seen as much as 60 miles per gallon
when I'm doing primarily city driving.
366.567 -> And those that have a, you know, kind of
a commute where they're doing
369.169 -> all kind of stop-and-go in the city, they get really,
really great fuel economy.
373.474 -> And then outside of-- If you kind of take winter
out of the equation,
376.81 -> my average is actually more like 45 miles per gallon
380.581 -> rather than 38.4 miles per gallon overall. So
383.951 -> the fuel economy really does live up to the hype.
It is very, very impressive.
388.956 -> A few pleasant surprises.
Like I'd done a lot of research,
391.425 -> so I knew pretty much exactly what I was getting.
394.228 -> And in large part, the vehicle has lived up
to what I expected.
397.598 -> But a few things that have been
a really pleasant surprise is that,
400.534 -> it was a much more car-like driving experience
than what I expected.
404.171 -> Now, of course, it is a unibody. It's not a large truck.
It's built on a,
407.908 -> you know, the same kind of frame as something like
the Ford Escape or the Bronco Sport.
413.28 -> However, the driving mechanics really
weren't all that different
416.116 -> from the car that I switched from. And so,
I was really pleasantly surprised by that.
420.187 -> And then, also, just the overall seating height
and position
423.09 -> was one that was just really pleasant for me
425.225 -> and has been for others that have ridden
in the vehicle or driven it.
428.862 -> One thing that I didn't expect up front
for a vehicle that promised
431.698 -> to be very popular, was how exclusive
it was going to be.
434.902 -> I thought I waited a long time to get mine.
Truth of the matter is, is that
438.872 -> the vehicle proved so popular, and the hybrid platform
proved unexpectedly popular.
444.111 -> And as a byproduct, it has been really, really
hard to get one.
447.147 -> I waited for nearly a year to get mine,
448.882 -> but right now, those that are ordering are waiting
even longer to get them.
452.219 -> And so, it's ended up being, at least in my area,
a more exclusive vehicle
456.156 -> than what was kind of forecast to be.
458.725 -> As a byproduct, pretty much everywhere I go,
people want to talk about it,
461.862 -> particularly when I'm pulling into like a lumber yard
to pick up materials,
465.732 -> and I come in kind of like ghosts-like,
you know, on electric power
469.503 -> and without any kind of noise.
And so, immediately,
472.072 -> guys in yards, everywhere, they want to talk
about the vehicle, and
475.776 -> you can see them kind of evaluating,
"Would this work for me?"
479.813 -> I've also been impressed by how long the distance is
between the service intervals.
483.216 -> This is my first hybrid that I'm driving,
485.686 -> and one of the kind of byproducts of driving a hybrid
is that the service intervals are
490.357 -> fewer and a little bit further in between.
And so, I've been able to go,
494.428 -> you know, around 10,000 miles before needing
to have any kind of service work.
498.398 -> So, obviously, at this point, I'm still not quite
502.135 -> to my second oil change in the vehicle
with over a year of driving.
506.106 -> That's obviously a pleasant surprise there as well.
509.309 -> I was also pleasantly surprised the first time
that I started to pull a trailer.
512.613 -> I've got a 4x8 basically sized utility trailer,
516.683 -> and when I hooked it up to it, I was pleasantly surprised
by a couple of things.
520.187 -> First of all, I've never driven a vehicle for where
it had a kind of a smart integration.
524.992 -> So when I plugged in the electrical into it,
it was able to-- Number one,
530.33 -> it recognized everything and actually told me that
I had one of my actual tail lamps
535.602 -> on the trailer out, and, of course, it was correct.
538.472 -> And so, that kind of clever interfacing.
541.241 -> But then, also, I was pleasantly surprised by
the experience of being able to zoom in
546.58 -> on the backup camera and have a line right there
at the trailer hitch receiver
551.284 -> that helped guide me to the trailer itself,
554.988 -> and that certainly was a pleasant thing.
557.224 -> I've also been pleasantly surprised by the interior
toughness of this vehicle.
561.595 -> It became more of a work vehicle
than what I envisioned.
564.331 -> We have just finished up and are still doing some things
on a massive 8,300-square-foot
569.369 -> addition to the church that I pastor.
572.413 -> And, as a byproduct, I ended up using this
575.676 -> in much dirtier conditions than what I would like
to use a new vehicle for.
579.479 -> And so, there's been times that it's had all kinds of
drywall dust inside, and
583.984 -> all kinds of dirt and other things.
And worst of all, I actually even got
588.088 -> some tar from working on a roof,
some tar onto the seats.
592.192 -> I've been able to clean everything.
It's held up really well.
595.462 -> And, right now, you know, after doing a little bit of detail,
it gets back to looking like new.
599.466 -> And the other pleasant thing here in Ontario, Canada
about these seats,
603.637 -> is that these seat heaters warm up really fast
and they warm up really hot.
608.208 -> And so, that's something that everybody
that has ridden in here
611.878 -> has commented on that they really, really enjoy.
614.848 -> So, are there anything that I am disappointed about?
617.951 -> Well, there's definitely one thing
620.187 -> that I would say has stood out to me as being
a significant disappointment,
623.623 -> and that is that there still is more glitchiness
to the SYNC 3
628.295 -> audio interface that's in this vehicle
than what I would like.
630.964 -> And the biggest thing that annoys me is that,
a lot of times, it will reset in between,
635.735 -> you know, driving and then stopping.
It will reset to--
639.539 -> Basically, it always defaults to the radio.
641.708 -> And so, I mean, either I'm using a USB memory stick
644.578 -> or I've been using Bluetooth to connect
to the audio from my phone,
648.982 -> and the fact that it will reset from that
is a true annoyance,
653.42 -> and it's something that I would really,
really love to see fixed
656.623 -> by, you know, an over-the-air-type update.
659.025 -> But very likely, it's not going to happen
in this particular vehicle.
662.329 -> And so, that's something, you know,
to watch out for.
665.532 -> Now, in conclusion, there's a couple of things that
I have upgraded, that
669.302 -> have been enjoyable for me.
670.971 -> I did upgrade the speakers,
added a subwoofer in here.
675.242 -> I replaced all the speakers, but I put separates into
the front door and added in
679.346 -> the woofer that is down in the door, but then
added a separate tweeter up front.
683.95 -> It just helps the sound quality to be vastly improved.
687.053 -> So that's something that I certainly would recommend.
689.456 -> Then, a really inexpensive thing to add to the tailgate
is a hydraulic assist
693.693 -> that I got from Ford for about 50 bucks,
696.129 -> and it just makes the tailgate a soft close,
and is really, really nice.
701.034 -> I did purchase winter tires and rims.
704.171 -> It's kind of a big thing here in Canada
to be able to do that,
707.44 -> but I was actually really pleased with the
winter rims that I was able to get
710.644 -> and the overall look of them.
They were really, really, excellent.
713.68 -> And the drive ride quality was still great
even after making those switches. So,
718.485 -> in conclusion, I really love the vehicle.
I love the versatility, I love the,
723.089 -> you know, the reality of having the fuel economy
of a compact car
726.927 -> with a vehicle that's actually the size of a Ford Explorer.
729.396 -> It's a fairly large vehicle. Even though it's small
for truck standards,
733.8 -> it's, you know, it's a good size vehicle.
736.836 -> It's about as roomy inside as what my car was,
740.14 -> but then also to have that bed back there
742.542 -> which I have used for all kinds of things.
744.878 -> Bottom line is that I would order another one
in a heartbeat.
748.048 -> In fact, considering how long it takes to get one,
750.75 -> I'm considering ordering one right now
for my next vehicle.
755.155 -> So, I don't know, you know, how patient you are
in getting your next vehicle,
759.926 -> but if you're looking for something that's really,
really versatile, as a photographer, and
764.097 -> not just a photographer,
but doing all kinds of things.
767.367 -> I have used this for, I mean,
dozens of different purposes,
770.437 -> and it really is a truly useful and versatile vehicle
773.94 -> that's still small enough to fit into
parking spaces and
777.077 -> not just be kind of a nightmare to drive around.
779.779 -> So bottom line, it's been great for me.
781.281 -> I suspect it might be pretty awesome
for you as well,
784.251 -> and I wanted to give a long-term update
as a photographer
787.554 -> and someone that does a lot of things
of the Ford Maverick.
791.091 -> It's a pretty fantastic vehicle.
793.226 -> I'm Dustin Abbott, and if you'll look
in the description down below,
796.029 -> you can find the typical linkage to follow
me on social media,
799.599 -> to become a patron, to get channel merchandise.
802.969 -> And of course, if you haven't already,
please like and subscribe.
805.272 -> Thanks for watching. Have a great day,
and let the light in.
